I'm pretty sure a bounty was placed on Hashirama's head, thus explaining why Kakuzu went after him. Money made him delusional to have thought he could defeat the God of Shinobi.

He was ordered by Takigakure to kill Hashirama. He failed and when he returned, they shunned him.
That's why Kakuzu was so fixated on money, he couldn't trust people as result of his past issues.

The fact he was sent to take out the first and failed just reinforced the fact he was out matched from the beginning. Kakazu didn't even have his village's hidden jutsu when he was sent out to kill him. Way to suck it up lol.
