No one - Chapter 3. ''The Special Mission''

You could say I am easily manipulated into doing other peoples dirty work, I am a naive person, and usually I was never told I had a choice, I was the type of kid who would be at the back of the crowd with no one even noticing my existence, but somehow I liked it that way. I liked being isolated from society, wandering around in my own world, without a care for anyone. I only applied to fight in this war because it made me feel normal, Useless humans all pile up in trenches for weeks before we get to jump over the top and die with dignity, die as a nameless hero who did good for his country, to eradicate it’s problems and bring glory to everyone he cares about. For me it was just myself; to die with a purpose is enough to manipulate me into doing anything...

Colonel Bismarck grabbed my shoulder as I was staring into the battlefield, watching the dust rise from the ground, I lifted my head to see a hail of bullets coming down upon us like arrows shot from the sun, we ducked down into the trench to discuss the next attack. ‘‘Listen everyone, we are going to conduct a special mission, some people will be selected and will be free from the hell that is this trench, until then please take care and more importantly, don’t die.’’ Somehow, I could feel that I was a chosen one, one of the people that would take part in this ‘special mission’ for the remainder of that day I spent most of my time socializing with other people. However, everything that was going around me didn’t matter at all, I had committed a murder to my own comrade, to someone who would risk their life for his people, a true soldier. I was filled with bloodstains, not physically, but emotionally. I might have not cared about the wellbeing of others since they didn’t care about my existence to begin with, but this soldier ran out into the battlefield to save me from a concussion, and what did I do? Left him to die from blood loss, lifted him away from his family, a child without a father figure, a wife without a husband, a family without a man, thousands of memories wept away in a single second... Am I a tyrant? Am I even trustable around other soldiers? Would I do this again? These questions couldn’t even be answered by myself, I had no life anymore. My only life was to live through this painful memory and try to create a better world for his family.

Some time passed and the silence that was embarking upon me and the other soldiers, was broken by Colonel Bismarck approaching us, seeing his metal feet slowly hit the ground, causing an emotional earthquake at every second, feeling my heart beat faster as he is getting closer, to find out if I am the chosen one to take part in the mission. His feet make a stop as soon as he reaches me, with a smile on his face he simply smirks and says ‘‘You, come’’ His long index finger pointing at me, I stood up and walked along him until I reached a room inside the trench, it didn’t have a door, only a large whole wrapped with army clothes to seal it from incoming enemies, we walked inside to see a group of people standing each at one side of the room. As soon as I entered I could feel why I was chosen, these people were nothing like the ones I was attempting to speak with before, these people weren’t even human, they were all pale white; with no expression on their faces. It’s like they didn’t even know where they were, I could tell they were like me, people who had given up all hope in life and were led to war, my palms were beginning to sweat, a feeling of anxiety was rushing through my body. This didn’t seem like the right place, even the place itself... I could smell the fear in my brain, it was shouting ‘‘Don’t go through this!’’ But me being so easily manipulated took over all my emotions, I stood in the middle since all the walls were occupied by brainless soldiers. The colonel didn’t even speak, didn’t even take a register of the soldiers, no emotional speech to put courage in us, no anything. All he did was walk towards an exit, that was also covered by military equipment, then he slowly turn his head towards us and bobbed it towards the exit, telling us to get on the move and follow him. With nothing else to do, I followed him to a deserted road far away from the battlefield, where 3 cars were awaiting us. The Colonel simply sat in the first car, I sat in the second car with 4 other people. While the rest split themselves up and sat with either the Colonel or in the last car.

The journey seemed like weeks, I couldn’t even think properly. The sun was so bright my sweat was running down constantly, we finally arrived outside a small village. Where we were given guns and one simple order by the Colonel. ‘‘Kill, Kill them all’’ I looked around the village, only to see the most innocent people. Kids playing football with each other, an old couple walking slowly across the village, and newlyweds enjoying their youth. I could only ask ‘‘Why kill these people, they haven’t caused us any trouble and seem innocent. It’s only fai...’’ The Colonel placed his hand above my mouth and whispered ‘‘They may seem innocent, but these are the enemy in disguise, slowly building up the army and giving supplies so they can take us out when we don’t notice them. We need to eradicate these people, everyone... NOW!’’ His shout was so loud the birds fled from the trees, the kids stopped playing with their football to notice a hurl of soldiers running inside their town village, I was helpless, couldn’t even move a muscle. All I could hear was the agonistic scream from innocent people and the sounds of bullets leaving the guns, bodies falling down like dominoes, I had to take a look. Without anyone noticing me I ran inside the village and noticed one kid looking at me, his eyes were filled with tears. Beside him were his friends, their guts spilled out and blood all over the floor. The kid thought I was going to kill him, and started weeping as loud as he could, with the football still in his hand he tried to run away. That’s when one of my own comrades shot him in the head, he fell backwards and his brain landed on the floor. The football left his hand and rolled over to me...

WHAT HAS THIS WORLD COME TO?
