Nintendo President Satoru Iwata isn’t worried about Sony’s PS4 or Microsoft’s Xbox One. He’s said that the company isn’t going to cut the Wii U’s price and that the prices of Sony and Microsoft’s consoles actually help the Wii U.
In a recent interview Iwata declared that Nintendo doesn’t ‘care too much’ about what they’re competitors are doing.
We just don’t care too much about what other companies are doing or are trying to do. Our primary focus is to think about and actually carry out something which other company’s hardware can never realize. We are trying to provide consumers gaming experiences that can only be available on Nintendo platforms
This shouldn’t be mistaken for Nintendo not paying attention to what the industry is trying tell them. They are humble enough to say that a game like Skyrim could influence the next Legend of Zelda title. So I wouldn’t take it as Nintendo being too stuck in their ways.
I think sticking to their guns and not focusing too much on what Sony/MS are doing is the right decision. Remember how Sega looked over their shoulder at every turn during the mid to late 90′s in regards to what Sony and Nintendo were doing? That lead them to throw a complicated processor into the Sega Saturn and make multiple mistakes with the Dreamcast.
Nintendo has the right attitude of trying to find ways to prove why people need a Nintendo device, not why they need a Nintendo device INSTEAD of another device. Sure, this may reduce Nintendo to a “secondary” console status but that means people are more inclined to buy your console in general, even if it feels specific needs for specific reasons.
