I’ve seen a lot of good theories on why Hagoromo might end up as the big bad. I haven’t seen many on why he’s much more likely to be good. I don’t think he’s always been good – he seems to have regrets over some things he’s done. What sticks out about Hagoromo, however, is how consistent he has been in defending and promoting Ninshuu.

You might be forgiven for thinking that we know too little about Ninshuu and that Ninshuu and Ninjutsu are essentially the same things. Ninshuu is not a new concept within the Manga. It is has appeared within the manga, although without much explanation, at various times within the story and each time it has appeared it has been drawn in stark contrast to Ninjutsu.

Beginnings
Ninshuu is what Hagoromo first taught both his children until one of them was led astray by Black Zetsu:
You must be registered for see images
It is summed up by the message on the Tablet left by Hagoromo to keep Indra and his heirs on the straight and narrow:
You must be registered for see images
However, that message left by Hagoromo was corrupted by Black Zetsu:
You must be registered for see images
…and so when it came to chose an heir Hagoromo was forced to chose the son not corrupted by Black Zetsu to carry on his teachings:
You must be registered for see images
We can work out how Black Zetsu corrupted the Uchiha. He left messages on the Naka Shrine Tablet that could only be read by those who inherited Dojutsu:
You must be registered for see images
The original message, in ancient tongue, was intended to be read by all Indra’s heirs and not just those who had Dojutsu (Hashirama has no problem deciphering the true message left by Hagoromo):
You must be registered for see images
The resounding message of Ninshuu is one of Peace, Love and Co-operation.
Taking Sides
We can work out which side of the line the major players stand on. Right from the outset Black Zetsu worked to undermine the message of Ninshuu. When Ninshuu is mentioned in his presence he heaps scorn upon it:
You must be registered for see images
On the other hand Hagoromo is insulted when Naruto acclaims him as the founder of Ninshuu:
You must be registered for see images
But the message of Ninshuu has consistently been passed down from generation to generation in spite of Black Zetsu’s efforts to stamp it out. The first time Ninshuu was mentioned in the Manga it was the subject of one of those translation errors that always turn out to be oh so important. Most translations did not recognise the the name Ninshuu as a title and instead translated it as things like Ninja Teaching or Ninja Religion:
You must be registered for see images
However, some translations got it right:
You must be registered for see images
Ninshuu was the school subscribed to by Jiraiya, passed on to Nagato (though he was tempted away for a time by Tobi) before eventually being entrusted to Naruto:

Powers
Ninshuu is not just the hippie counterpart to Ninjutsu. In the hands of Asura it was able to pool the chakra of the first Allied Shinobi Army against Indra (under the control of Black Zetsu):
You must be registered for see images
Which was how the not so naturally gifted Asura was able to borrow chakra:
You must be registered for see images
…and create this:
You must be registered for see images
It is also how Naruto is able to spread his chakra amongst the Allied Shinobi forces:
You must be registered for see images
More importantly it is also the secret to unlocking the true power of the Bijuu. In order to get the most out their bijuu the Jinchuuriki must combine their power with their beast and not rely on seals or cages.
True Bijuu Transformation:
You must be registered for see images
The cages were never very secure anyway. They always leaked chakra, the seal needed to be reapplied regularly and nobody could be certain when it would fall apart:
You must be registered for see images
Co-operation (the true message on the Naka Shrine Tablet) is what allowed Naruto to eventually be granted the power to complete his Bijuu transformation:
You must be registered for see images
The secret as Mito put it was to fill the host with love:
You must be registered for see images
Naruto's new approach is what won him each of the nine bijuu and granted him his new suite of powers:
You must be registered for see images
Note that there were only ever Nine Bijuu in Hagoromo. The Rabbit that we saw this last week was never contained within him. When the Sage talks about unlocking his powers he identifies Kurama as the key:
You must be registered for see images
In Itachi’s final encounter we saw a sumbol that had no real meaning at the time. It showed eight flames contained within a Square with the word Fox at its centre:
You must be registered for see images
This symbol corresponds to one shown in Madara’s hideout behind the Gedo Mazo:
You must be registered for see images
I think that the Square represents the chakra that was sealed within Hagoromo while the larger Circle represents the Ten Tailed Rabbit:
You must be registered for see images
This Rabbit was not sealed in Hagoromo. The legends of Hagoromo tell of only nine tailed beasts:
You must be registered for see images
…while the number of eyes on the Gedo Mazo corresponds to the number of beasts that Hagoromo divided his chakra into:
You must be registered for see images
The Gedo Mazo is Hagoromo’s body after the chakra was divided and expelled. Hagoromo’s main feature (his beard) is evident on both the statue and some of the tailed beasts (Kurama while emerging from his chakra pool):

The Rabbit:
You must be registered for see images
…is most likely the portion of the Juubi that was sealed inside Hamura:
You must be registered for see images
…and was then transferred into Madara to awaken Kaguya by Black Zetsu (the Staff seen sticking into the Gedo Mazo’s belly) :
You must be registered for see images

You must be registered for see images
Black Zetsu is probably Hamura’s Staff (the black Pole):

Two Tales
The stories of Ninshuu and Ninjutsu present two visions that cannot exist in harmony. These are not opposing forces that come together. Rather they are at the heart of a prophecy that could swing the world either to destruction or lasting peace:
You must be registered for see images
On one side you have a vision that wants to build a future following the example set by the best and finest (Hagoromo, Asura, Hashirama, Hiruzen, Jiraiya, Nagato) whose hopes all rest in the tale of one ninja:

You must be registered for see images

You must be registered for see images

You must be registered for see images
… and on the other you have Ninjutsu with its story of pain, war and hatred:
You must be registered for see images

You must be registered for see images

You must be registered for see images
Ninjutsu has one proponent:
You must be registered for see images

You must be registered for see images
Who has waited a very long time for his own child of destiny:

So are you saying orochimaru will posses sasuke?
It depends on whether Oro is Hamura or whether he just serves him. Good and Bad tend to balance each other out in this manga. If Hagoromo is good then he needs a counterweight. I don't see this manga ending before Oro makes his big play. He hasn't made it yet which makes me think it could be saved for a Part 3. That play would be the possession of Sasuke.

That scan is incorrect.
The viz scan saids that the Juubi was only sealed in hagoromo.

Great Theory tho.
Thanks. I can't attest to the accuracy of that scan's translation but I think it makes more sense that Hagoromo didn't have all of the Juubi Chakra sealed inside him. The Rabbit doesn't roam free and Hagoromo is only ever shown with 9 Bijuu.

I figure Hamura was eaten by the Juubi and was forced to transmigrate. I think it's him who is shown in the Juubi's mouth. I figure the Rabbit was sealed inside Hamura's staff (Black Zetsu). Again it's all just theory:

Ninshu was used by Naruto accidentally when everyone saw his memories and felt his heart. That is Ninshu the ability to connect chakras and understand one another emotionally.

Pretty much. Naruto uses it a lot by accident. It saves him a couple of times in dire situations. I think it's what lets Naruto connect to Sasuke when they fight without holding back:
You must be registered for see images
Should they ever do that again Naruto expects them both to die. I'm guessing Oro wants that to happen and that's how he wants the prophecy to end in destruction. By hook or by crook, he'll probably be back in Sasuke by that time.

The choice of the outcome will depend on Sasuke. Oro will probably try and find some way of making the choice more difficult. Madara had Kakashi kill Rin in front of Obito's eyes. It's hard to say what Oro will come up with but Kishi did mention killing off a member of Team 7...

I don't like Ninshuu, it feels like another form of IT. Because it warps the mind into feeling something.

Establishing true peace like Gaara is said is a tough process, but its something that the real world needs to establish. Not by some hocus pocus chakra technique.

More Ninshuu

Time to see the rest of Gamamaru's prophecy:

Sasuke doesn't seem too convinced that he falls in the good category:

Maybe Oro can help him make up his mind

Hmm, nice thought process. Though if Orochimaru is the final villain as the Naga, I think it would be best if he influences Sauske to go against Naruto leading to the fight. Orochimaru taking over Sauske's body seems meh to me. <_<

That'd force Naruto to give up on his friend. If Sasuke gets taken over then it allows Naruto to stay true to his Ninja way and rescue his friend. Naruto never gives up - that's his character and that's what Ninshuu is supposed to represent.

I've been thinking about Kaguya and some of Oro's victims. They show some incongruous behaviour that doesn't fit with their actions. Kaguya cries at the same time that she talks about how she hates her children:
You must be registered for see images

You must be registered for see images
It reminded me of how Oro seemed to be crying when he faced off against Hiruzen:
You must be registered for see images

You must be registered for see images
When Oro transmigrates into a new host, what if they remain aware of what they are doing but are incapable of doing anything about it? When the Orphan who was raised by Hiruzen is forced to fight Hiruzen he cries and when Kaguya is forced to attack her children / grandchildren her humanity comes through. Oro practices the exact opposite of how Naruto won over the Bijuu. Oro overwhelms his victims and forces them to do things they really don't want to:
You must be registered for see images
It's kind of dark but it would allow for a giant battle. Especially if Oro's Dragon Sage Mode:
You must be registered for see images
is on a scale able to swallow a rabbit:
You must be registered for see images
as easily as this:
You must be registered for see images
That'd be less meh..

There aren't many theories on why he's good, because it's damned obvious.
The threads on Hagoromo being evil have a point. He has been acting very cagey and has been extremely selective in what he's revealed to Naruto. Hagoromo hasn't told any lies (at least I don't think he has) but he's omitted an awful lot. I thought I'd write this to establish why he's good before I updated a theory on what I think he's been neglecting to fill Naruto in on.
