I was thinking about the ninja rank structure and concluded that it is bunk. The way ranks are assigned (at least in the Leaf), is dumb and it doesn't mesh with the reality of the Shinobi World.
Look at shinobi who have no rank.
Deidara
Bee
Danzo
Hanzo
Ame Orphans: Nagato, Yahiko, Konan
Hidan
Gari
Kinkaku and Ginkaku
Haku
Kimimaro
Madara (but he's from a time before ranks and is special)
The Jins Han, Roshi, Utakata
You look at how dangerous they are, compare them to shinobi who have high ranks, and you conclude that ranks are arbitrary titles, that don't confer skill or aptitude.
Recall that Oro, Jiraiya and Tsunade fought together as Jonins against Hanzo (who has no rank) and they couldn't beat him. Even working together. Hanzo gave them the title Sannin (Legendary Three) as a reward for their accomplishment of not dying against him.
You have people with ranks, who have skills way beyond their class. Namely Naruto and Kabuto. We know what Naruto is capable of. It bears reminding people that Part 1, Genin Kabuto killed several ANBU no diff, out-smarted Kakashi and nearly killed Jonin Shizune and Jonin Tsunade in single combat.
Obito is technically a Chunin, but half is body is white zetsu, and most of what Obito does (spam kamui and his large katons) are products of the Hashi cells reducing the degenerative effects of Kamui and boosting his chakra. Obito still clashed with Minato and controlled Kurama, so that's something.
So, do ninja ranks really matter or is it more about what a ninja can actually do?
