people tend to forget all about "The Way of Ninja"
Hashiramas "Way of Ninja" seem to be "maintain world peace" or atleast he always wanted to build a village and invite all those who wanted peace...
now... what Hashirama said about Itachi being a better Shinobi than himself, is just that Itachi fulfilled Hashiramas Way of Ninja, by sacrificing his loved ones to maintain peace in Konoha... he did something that Hashirama would not be able to do, killing your own parents, cousins... all of them? and therefore Itachi is a better Shinobi than Hashirama, because Itachi had the correct Way of Ninja according to Hashiramas Point of View.
he did not mean that Itachi had better Ninjutsu, Taijutsu or that Itachi was stronger than Madara or Hashirama at all...
and btw what Itachi did was both Heroistic and very cruel to those "innocent" Uchiha... but for the sake of a whole village... some people must always suffer for the majority to live well... it's always been like that, even in the real world! and that's just the way it is, doesn't matter how sad it actually is... the world just works that way unfortunately...
