Xbox 720 powered by AMD x86 chip - Report

Sources say architecture for Microsoft's next-gen platform will mirror PS4; new format means Xbox 360 discs won't be compatible.



According to sources speaking to Bloomberg, Microsoft's still-unannounced Xbox 720 will use an AMD x86 processor. AMD is also providing chips for Sony's PlayStation 4.

A shift to the x86 format means Xbox 360 discs won't be supported and backwards compatibility would be possible only through software emulation.

The AMD processor in the Xbox 720 reportedly combines "Jaguar" central processing units with graphics chips, according to one of the sources, who wished not to be named because Microsoft's plans have not yet been made public.

A Microsoft representative told GameSpot, "We do not comment on rumors or speculation. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform, but we don’t have anything further to share at this time."

Microsoft has not announced its future platform, though the company is reportedly preparing to do just that during an event on May 21. According to Windows blogger Paul Thurrott, the Xbox 720 will sell for $500 or $300 with a subscription.

PS4 feels alot more attractive atm. More exclusives I want first of all, and Xbox will require being online just to use it I've read
Why would I want the new xbox instead of just playing on PC? What's the deal with it? Read it's gonna focus more on Kinect and well I dunno how much that technology has improved but
it does not sound good to me. I like gaming with a controller, call it old fashioned or whatever. Wii was cool, had some fun games but the controller got annoying after a while.

... there are many advantages and disadvantages. I'm still going with the PS4 if the NextBox has the "always on" connection requirement.

Disappointing for the short term, beneficial for the long term. I was hoping Microsoft could somehow redeem themselves after the bombardment of rumors of them employing a DRM scheme, but they're just rumors. Hopefully Microsoft unveil a great console to rival Sony's already great one.

You won't be able to use your Ps3 discs on Ps4, but you can buy Ps3 games from PSN and run them on Ps4. But yeah, you'll have to buy your old games again to run them.

This will make coding much easier for all the platforms, so people will pretty much get the same experience throughout all the main platforms.
This is actually pretty great for developers; it would save them a lot of money and time in making a game for PC, Xbox 720 and PS4...

I heavily doubt that. Probably the popular games of the current gen will be available. It would be too much to integrate every single game on the PS3 to Gaikai
