...take a look Xentiel's sig. Less ist more. The color combination, contrast is important too, position of the chara and logo/name as well. Don't do 'something' and 'somehow'. Question yourself at the beginning what do you wanna have as result. Tutorials (Xentiel already said) deliever you some ideas how to reach your aim.
