I was just in another debate thread about Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi not being required to unlock susano'o and this crazy idea somehow popped into my head when Madara was mentioned. A user stated since Madara never used either technique, it's safe to assume they aren't required. The theory that only Rinnegan can manifest perfect susano'o also contributed to this: What if Limbo is a combination of both Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi?
This could explain why Madara never used them because they permanently became one technique when he unlocked the Rinnegan or when he altered them to be so. Furthermore, Itachi's descriptions of the two techniques are very yin and yang like. Amaterasu is described as "A representation of the material world and light" while Tsukuyomi is "a representation of the spirit world and darkness."
Limbo is defined as an invisible world that where a shadow is made into form and can make physical contact, but no one can see it. In other words, being both a spiritual and physical technique, like the yin-yang release.
