I don't think it's a bad idea, especially if the stock/render is given along with the finished avatar to show the amount of work that was done. Also, monthly would be better than weekly since there would be too many entries every week, however:

We are not going to do it. In the SotW you can submit BOTH horizontal and vertical sigs. In the end the main difference between a signature and an avatar is that one is most of the time horizontal and the other vertical and because avatars are mostly quite small, they almost always are focused on the main stock/render or whatever, not having any room for other stuff. Considering you can submit pretty much already avatars in the SotW, there is no need for a separate contest.
