Hey hope this list helps I recommend trying each of these for at least 3 episodes.
Kenichi the mightiest desciple(Manga has amazing story anime didn't get too far but goes to a good stopping point)
Baccano!(Seriously one of the best stories in an anime I've EVER seen, Great animation and Amazing Dubbing, Can not recommend this enough)
7 Samurai(Anime adaptation of Akira Kurosawa classic Samurai 7, if you don't know Akira is THE man and Mifune is awesome, I highly recommend the Akira movie as well though it is something like 3 hours long)
Afro Samurai(Samuel L Jackson, need I say more)
Samurai Champloo(Jin & Mugen are epic characters and make that show)
Hetalia(animated web mini-sodes based on WW2. Each country is personified through a human who exemplifies stereotypes of their representative countries. Really funny for History fans but good for others)
Sekirei(for those pervy nights ;p)
Desert Punk(Fun story and good lead character, set in futuristic time but in a desert wasteland environment survivalist feel, very entertaining to me, good comedy)
Golgo 13(never finished but ok action, it's about a top notch famous hitman)
Gun x Sword(didn't finish this either it got too much for me but good animation)
Moribito(Good story about a female assigned to bodyguard a child)
Sengoku Basara(One of the best action anime and also a reference/connection to the game Samurai Warriors by Toei, youtube clips of Masamune Date from SB and you'll understand

)
YuYu Hakusho(An oldy but a goodie)
Zoids(may be a little to future tech from what I understand but it was fun when I watched it originally)
Cowboy Beebop(3 misfit bounty hunters and Ed= Hilarity & Heartfelt)
Ninja Scroll(NINJAS)
Basilisk(NINJAS WITH GORE lol semi historically relevant also)
Shigurui Death Frenzy(Similar to Basilisk but starring the famed Zatoichi, blind swordsman, and the famed one armed swordsman, I say famed because each character style has been used in many movies)
Ruroni Kenshin(As you may be starting to figure out, I love Ninja)
Sword of the stranger(Honestly can't recall much about this but it made my list so must have had something to it)
Trigun(Vash the Stampede lol)
Baki the Grappler(this is more martial arts focused than story I believe but still a decent story)
Fighting Spirit/Hajime no Ippo(good action good story Manga is still ongoing)
Get Backers(Good story fast paced as the name suggests people adapt at getting away are hired by others to "get back" stolen property for them)
Samurai Deeper Kyo(I find anything set in ancient japan with samurai and ronin interesting and this has good action)
Jing King of Bandits(Interesting and different from the run of the mill stories)
Shura no Toki(another historical reference anime this time about the Heian era and a clan of unarmed martial artists)
Bamboo Blade(One of the few animes I've seen with a woman protagonist, about a young girl joining the Kendo club at school and learning sword fighting)
Saiyuki(Based on ancient chinese legend of the Monkey King Son Goku aka Sun Wukong)
Deadman Wonderland(Pretty dark story and characters but interesting characters)
