Genjutsu literally means illusionary techniques it's the disruption of the mind via chakra manipulation through eye to eye contact, sound contact etc. Genjutsu is the manipulation of the Yin Seal, or Yin Release in which is mainly spiritual chakra (spiritual effects the mind/body; basically inner thoughts).

Where Genjutsu came from.. Hm I believe the progenitor meaning The Jubi, or Rikudou Sennin. I'm not to sure on how to explain this question.

Is that all you have for genjutsu? Cab you expand on it a bit?
Hm. Sure thing homie. In addition to the above info, there are several types of Genjutsu; 3-Tomeo Genjutsu, Mangekyou Genjutsu, Sound-based Genjutsu etc. The NV has many types of Genjutsu however, being so little in arsenal size (referring to characters not really possessing Genjutsu) this category of Jutsu is very deadly in the eyes of the uninformed.

Genjutsu is mostly known to create false images of the user, or objects to trick the users mind into a false situation. Genjutsu can also be used for pain (the brain interprets pain, if Genjutsu manipulates the brain to thinking an area is severely hurt, the brain will feel the false pain). There are plenty of other uses for Genjutsu, but they're highly dependent on the situation.

Genjutsu is manifested by concentrating, and manipulating the chakra within the opponents brain, to trick their senses throwing them off completely. Allowing them to see images, feel false pain, etc.

TL;DR Genjutsu is a big mindf*ck :leaf:

Much better, but to add onto what you said:
Genjutsu is a branch of Yin Release which is the ability to user our chakra in order to bring our imagination to life. It is a spiritual ability, honed through study and meditation.
Now genjutsu itself, is using your chakra to disrupt your opponent's chakra system and cause them to experience specific sensations which can affect one or all of his five senses.
Now these things don't happen for real, they are simple illusions that can be easily dispersed through several different means, such as pain, a chakra surge, or an ally to reset your chakra system. Now before you can do that, you have to make sure that you understand the technique is a genjutsu. It might be tricky for some, but that's the key to beating genjutsu. You don't need any special abilities, just plain old common sense really. Say for example, that I cause you to suddenly cause you to go blind. This is highly illogical, people don't just suddenly go blind out of nowhere, it's never happened to you before, and you can feel that your eyes are still open. In addition, I hadn't thrown a flash bomb, or smoke bomb, or whatever. Therefor, you can deduce that I placed you in a genjutsu. There are other ways to deduce you're in a genjutsu, such as by using a dojutsu to see your altered chakra circulatory system.
Speaking of dojutsu, the sharingan allows you to cast genjutsu on your opponents with mere eyesight, so it might be a good idea to avoid eye contact with them. In addition, they are able to break out of certain visual genjutsu (genjutsu that affect our eyesight), passively so it wouldn't be a good idea to use genjutsu on a sharingan user, since they can reverse it onto you, detect they're in a genjutsu, or place you into their own genjutsu. All this from the abilities of their eyes.
To break out of genjutsu with a chakra surge, the chakra surge will have to be at least 1 rank higher than the genjutsu you want to break. For example, if I want to break a B rank genjutsu, I could use Chidori Nagashi (A rank full body surge). Why is Nagashi a chakra surge? Because it releases a high amount of chakra through your chakra system from almost every single tenketsu or chakra point, and sort of flushes and resets your own chakra system to break you out of genjutsu. A better jutsu to use however, would be a simple Kai (you'll learn that here, although later where we'll go into more detail). However, using pain, depends upon the rank of the illusion and if it paralyzes you or not. If it paralyzes you, logically you won't be able to cut your palm with a knife to dispel an illusion. So in that case it's best to use a non handseal requiring chakra surge. Now then, in terms of pain a general benchmark was made by Scorps:

D Rank Genjutsu: Chipping a Finger (like one does as he bites to draw blood for a Summoning Jutsu)
C Rank Genjutsu: Low level Physical Attacks, Bitting a chunk of your Cheek
B Rank Genjutsu: Low ranked Taijutsu/Freestyle
A Rank Genjutsu: High ranked Taijutsu, Stabbing Yourself in minor muscle, Cutting yourself, Breaking Smaller bones, Low level Burning/Voltage, Painful Cold
S Rank Genjutsu: EIG/Sage level Taijutsu, Breaking Bones, Deep Stabs or cuts, Medium Voltage/Burning, Extreme Painful Cold, Bitting your tongue off
In addition to casting genjutsu via the eyes, you can also cast it via other mediums, assuming you have the skills such as sound.

Now genjutsu can also be layered, here's a great explanation of it (courtesy of Scorps):

This stands as the ability that the user and/or allies have of casting more than one non-conflicting genjutsu onto the same target, mixing illusions or deepening them. Any non-conflicting Genjutsu can be layered with another, as long as the highest ranked genjutsu is used first, and the lower ones afterwards, as if filling the gaps of the illusion. If an higher ranked genjutsu is used afterwards, it will overule the initial technique and break it. The user may stack up to 2 illusions together.

Ex: Genjutsu A - Creates Butterflies, A ranked.
Genjutsu B - Creates Squirrels, B ranked.

A + B = Butterflies AND Squirrels
B + A = Butterflies NO Squirrels
When releasing from Layered Genjutsus, the target must perform counter sufficient for the highest rank genjutsu of the "combo", thus countering all at the same time. Likewise, the target can individually break each layered genjutsu by using lower ranked genjutsu methods, but in essence its a less effective method. If 2 genjutsus of the same rank are used in the layering process, one needs only to use a release method capable of releasing either one or the other, and both are released. In combinations of Genjutsu, the rank of the combination is the rank of the highest genjutsu used.

Ex: Genjutsu A - Creates Butterflies, A ranked.
Genjutsu B - Creates Squirrels, B ranked.
Genjutsu C - Creates Birds, B ranked.

B + C or C + B = Squirrels AND Birds, combined B rank Genjutsu
A + B = Butterflies AND Squirrels, combined A-Rank Genjutsu
C + A = Butterflies NO Birds, A-Rank
If the Genjutsu are conflicting, then the highest ranked Genjutsu will always prevail over the other one, disrupting it and assuming it's place. If they're both the same rank, both are neutralized and the ilusions end.

Note: Layering two Genjutsu doesn't mean one escapes the normal rules of Time Frame. Casting 2 Genjutsu on a target takes the time needed to perform two moves of the time frame and cannot be done in a way that the target hasn't time to counter the first illusion if he is capable of doing so.
Any questions?

I'm preparing you to do something later on in the training.

I place you under this illusion:

( Genjutsu: Jigoku Gouka ) - Illusion Technique: Hell Fire
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 15
Damage Points:N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion where the opponent sees a huge ball of fire descending from the sky and enveloping its target.

Deduce that you're in a genjutsu, and break it. o-o

Homie didn't even cast any hand seals, or blow out any Fire chakra. Since when did Fireballs come out of the Sky without warning? How the F*ck am I being burnt by fire..

Oh shit lowkey dying from random ass fire that appeared out of nowhere. F*ck logical thinking, b*tch I'm dying.

Alright bro. :p

I stare solemly into the clear, calm, blue sky. The wind blowing on my face "Such a beautiful day it is today." I pronounced in my head. The wind slightly increasing I pointed my hand in the air pretending to catch the waves of wind, then releasing it as if it were a floating butterfly.

Seconds later..

I felt an uneasy feeling, I stare from my hand, to the sky noticing several fire balls emerge from what looked like thin air. "What is this? How could I have not felt a presence? I don't understand how is thi-" quickly deducing that this was near impossible, without a presence to link the fireballs to I configured I had been put into a Genjutsu.

"A Genjutsu hm? It doesn't seem all that advanced this should do..!"

Seconds after realizing I was in a Genjutsu, and taking countermeasures to nullify the illusion I bit into the side of my tongue causing blood to rush down into my throat, and causing me to flinch. "Gawddammit!" I cursed in pain, focusing my vision back up at the sky noticing that the fireballs were gone.

Pretty good overall.
However, I wouldn't recommend biting your tongue or cheek. You'll end up choking to death on your own blood, or chunks of mouth-flesh >.>
It would have been better, if you would have used a kunai to slice your palm a bit, seeing as how this jutsu didn't actually paralyze you or anything. But seriously though great first breaking of a gen!
Now we can move on to the actual techniques:

( Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu ) - Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10 (+5 if you use it double)
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion over an area that allows him to manipulate the way an area looks to fool an opponent. He can only change the way the terrain looks, and not any other feature.

Alright, while low ranked this jutsu is pretty versatile. You can make it appear to be raining, a desert, etc. The opponent won't actually feel anything, but he'll be fooled by the appearance for a few seconds. It's low ranked, but you can do a lot with it. Now, I'd like you to perform the jutsu and tell me how this would be beneficial to a rain element user.

( Genjutsu: Kahen Tonsou ) - Illusion Technique: Flower Petal Escape
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes five handseals, appearing to dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals. These petals surround the opponent, blocking his vision. This allows the user to mask his movement effectively.

Ok this jutsu requires quite a few handseals for such a low ranked jutsu. Kind of useless, considering in our RP you can't freeform dodge a technique. This would be useful in close quarters however, to disguise incoming attacks from the opponent. Perform it, and give me a situation where you'd use this jutsu.

Well you know how when you're chewing gum, and you bite your tongue wouldn't that kind of pain freed me from the Genjutsu?

Focusing my chakra, then looking at my target, I release the built up chakra, aiming, and capturing my target into my low ranking technique. "Gotcha." Having been successful in my first ever Genjutsu, I manipulate it to my advantage, by creating a scenario of which an illusion of rain downpours on each of us feeling nothing of an illusion.

Q: How would this be beneficial to a Rain user?
A: A rain user could use the rain as an external source for Jutsu/Facades/Substitutions etc. In the face of a Rain user, Rain itself is the greatest weapon. One could substitute himself (to dodge an attack) with nearby rain drops, or could change the rain drops into Kunai. The possibilities are endless if you think about it.

Gathering my chakra calmly, I perform five hand seals, and feel a build up of chakra surround me completely then turn into pink flower petals gusting in the wind, tricking the opponent to believe I truly separated into several dozen of flower petals, and blocking their visionary senses, enabling me to go for a surprise attack.

Q: Describe a situation where you'd perform this Technique
A: Say you've shielded yourself with a C-Rank Doton, and your opponent has aimed a B-Rank Raiton at the shield of rock protecting you forcefully making you eject from your protective wall of Earth or you'd be hit by the B-Rank Raiton. This technique would serve as the perfect gamble. You perform the 5 hand seals, then swiftly move out to the Left direction trapping my opponent in a Genjutsu, where he sees me turn into several dozen flower petals.

However, in reality I'd have move to the Right direction planning my next move(s). This is interchangeable meaning you can release the Genjutsu to the Right, and go Left. Hell if you want to get ballsy you could jump up onto the shield of rock release the Genjutsu there, and then perform Hiding like a Mole Technique to escape underground.

The Ultimate Gamble.

All i need is a good performance of each technique i post. Since these are genjutsu i expect specific details. You can ask any questions you have as we go. Btw i'll be rping as Pein who are also the targets of your illusions.

*6 people all bearing the Rinnegan arrive at the training grounds and approach their new student. They hair color and clothes match but each are distinct in their own way. *

We will decide if your unenlightened mind can handle the art of genjutsu. Your first technique uses your opponent's fears against them. Perform two handseals before casting an illusion on your target. He will see leaves begin to spin around him and eventually fall to the floor. A moment later, he should witness his greatest fear right in front of him. Such a sight should make the target falter or faint if the illusion is especially traumatic. Remember that its effectiveness varies from person to person. Without knowing the enemy's fears, the chances he reacts the way you want become slim. See that overweight fellow? His should be easy to guess.

Itama Senju - ( Magen: Narakumi ) - Demonic Illusion: Hell Viewing
Itama stepped forward, entering his mentors presence, quickly noticing that there were six bodies, each possessing similar colored hair, attire, and visuals. A man who gave off the most powerful vibe of the six stepped forward, apprising Itama with valuable information for his next lesson on the profound art known as Genjutsu.

"We will decide if your unenlightened mind can handle the art of genjutsu. Your first technique uses your opponent's fears against them. Perform two handseals before casting an illusion on your target. He will see leaves begin to spin around him and eventually fall to the floor.

Itama nodded, taking in the guidance his mentor had just bestowed upon him, and applying it against the large man before him. Swiftly, Itama performed two hand seals, focusing his chakra upon his target entrapping the obese individual in a false twister of leafy, green debris, as well as shielding his vision. Not a minute later, the veil of leaves came to a promiscuous halt, falling to the Earth's floor, revealing the man's greatest fear.

Itama could see the pierced man's resilience, not even batting an eyelash at the terror that stood in front of him. Itama knew what this was, it was sheer experience, the man's experience was far greater than the Genjutsu he had just performed, he could see that clear as day.

I've still much to learn, he reassured himself silently. Turning back towards the man who seemed to be the leader of the six individuals awaiting his next instructions.

Deva views your progress through Preta's eyes. He watches the initial swirling of leaves and waits for a shocking image to appear but nothing follows. After waiting a bit, Preta holds his rumbling stomach that's unbearably empty.

Did you think his fear would manifest itself on its own? That is incorrect. You need to conjure an image you believe will have the most impact on your target like the loss of something precious to them or a past trauma. Unless you actually know your victim you can only guess what those fears are. Give it another shot.

Itama reveled at his failure. His mentor was correct, he'd hadn't envisioned the obese man's fear, he'd only focused on casting the Genjutsu, rather than actually finding the workings for its succession. Itama concentrated again, focusing his chakra toward his previous target.

Take in the man's features, what does his biggest weakness seem to be? Itama silently pondered, coming to a conclusion not a second later. "I see." He muttered quietly, focusing heavily on that very scenario. Leaves began to swirl around his target, causing him to once again lose his visuals, only to be greeted by obscenity.

Itama had created this illusion to imprison the man, hundreds of chains straddled across his body, restricting any possible movement. That was the first part of the illusion, the second part came from the vague growling of the man's stomach, Itama had picked up on moment earlier, bringing him to the conclusion of self hunger.

A vast feast of foods from several different villages within the ninja world positioned themselves on a small pallet inches away from his imprisoned position. Hot, steamy, and fragrant, the smell of the many delicious foods tortured the man, his stomach rumbling ever more with each passing second, his lust for sating himself grew until he could take it no more, passing out from undernourishment.

The Genjutsu then ended; The illusion vanished, while reality slowly returned.

The starving man looks upon the conjured feast with only ravenous desire in his eyes. He staggers forward toward his prize, passing right through the illusory chains failing to bind him. However, he is overcome with despair discovering that the tempting meal is merely an inedible illusion and faints on the spot.

Nicely done. Now that we've covered basic illusions you're going to learn how to break or release them. This is a crucial knowledge for any ninja so listen closely. As you know, genjutsu works by altering a person's chakra flow. To return his chakra flow to its normal state, another imbalance must occur to dispel current ones and allow his chakra to reset itself. Three basic methods exist to do just that:

Pain (lol): Possibly the easiest but most dangerous release method is producing pain. Like waking a person in slumber, it is meant to shock the body which alters his physical energy. This in turn creates a spike in his chakra, breaking the illusion. The level of pain needed to break an illusion increases with higher ranked illusions. Here's a basic guideline.

*hands you a scroll*
- D Rank Genjutsu: Chipping a Finger (like one does as he bites to draw blood for a Summoning Jutsu)
- C Rank Genjutsu: Low level Physical Attacks, Bitting a chunk of your Cheek
- B Rank Genjutsu: Low ranked Taijutsu/Freestyle
- A Rank Genjutsu: High ranked Taijutsu, Stabbing Yourself in minor muscle, Cutting yourself, Breaking Smaller bones, Low level Burning/Voltage, Painful Cold
- S Rank Genjutsu: EIG/Sage level Taijutsu, Breaking Bones, Deep Stabs or cuts, Medium Voltage/Burning, Extreme Painful Cold, Bitting your tongue off
Some ninja like myself are more accustomed to or resistant to pain, so this method won't be as effective for us. Hence, we move on to the next method.

Foreign chakra/energy: Basically, having chakra transferred to you by an ally or taking in any foreign energy such as natural energy into your chakra flow will unbalance it and thus release you from genjutsu. The last method is most important.

Kai/Chakra Surge- This one is meant to alter your spiritual energy through sheer willpower. Two ways to do this is through the Kai technique or causing a high chakra surge in your chakra flow. To break illusions with a chakra surge you must release large amounts of chakra from your whole body using a suitable jutsu. It should be at least one rank higher than the illusion so the surge overcomes the illusion. Raw chakra techniques must be at least two ranks higher.

As for the Kai technique, i will teach it to you now. First, form a handseal and focus on your chakra flow. Through willpower alone bring your flow to a halt before suddenly starting it up again with a surge of chakra. This will disturb your spiritual energy and get rid of the illusion cast on you as long as the chakra spent is equal to the chakra used for the genjutsu. Not all genjutsu can be broken with this technique. They include paralysis type genjutsu and Mangekyo Sharingan techniques. Your skill also determines the level of genjutsu you can break, higher skill allowing you to break high level genjutsu. If you're ready, try and break this illusion. Kokuangyo no Jutsu!

*darkness swirls around you, reducing your sight to nothing*
Rank: A
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 30
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes one handseal, causing the opponent to believe they have been trapped in a world of infinite darkness, where their sense of sight is useless. It is capable of affecting multiple targets within range. However, it does not negate their other senses.

( Genjutsu: Kai ) - Illusion Technique: Release
Rank: C-S
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 15-40
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user does one hand seal to focus and then proceeds to disturb his chakra flow by forcefully stopping it momentarily and then "spiking" his spiritual energy, unbalancing his chakra. This dispels any genjutsu set upon the user except MS Eye Techniques, Paralysis-like Genjutsu and Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant. The effectiveness of this technique is dependent upon the skill of the user. A Jounin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to C-rank. An S-class ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to B-rank. A Sannin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to A-rank. A Sage rank user can dispel Genjutsu up to S-Rank. The user may use this technique through physical contact on others to dispel them from Genjutsu. The technique can only be used once per turn and the user still needs to fully follow the logic as to why he figured out it was an illusion
