Has anyone else seen this anime? I just finished it and I can definitely say I had a blast with it.

Here's the gist of it:

It's a mecha action but there's a lot more to it than just that. It's one of the most psychological stories I have ever encountered in anime. It explores the human mind and actions in ways that I almost never see in fiction. The relationships between the characters and how they are influenced by their pasts as well as how those pasts influence their growth as human beings is really something to see. Though Evangelion hosts a number of insane events, the characters themselves are very realistic and easy to sympathize with as the story goes on.

I'm very glad I got to watch it and sometime I gotta get back to the rest of the story. I'm hoping that sooner than later I can watch End of Evangelion as well as the newer Rebuild films.

Thanks for the tip. Heard of it from time to time but never took the effort of trying it out.
Will do so this week ^^

Yup, I've seen it at least 3 times over. xd

I was really fond of the series, but the last two episodes sucked bad. I usually skip those two and watch End of Evangelion instead.
The Rebuild films are good so far, I'm hoping that it won't stray too much from the original.

Usually mecha anime are rather dull and chock-full of technical jargon, but Evangelion is one of the best anime I've ever seen.

Most of ppl complain about NGE saying that it's impossible to understand...or just plain hate Shinji.
I find Shinji an interesting character with all his weakness and faults---but my favorite is Asuka :D
And the Rebuild is absolutely marvelous..so it's kinda sad that NB members go there ignoring such a master piece.

Awesome, I hope you like it as much as I did.

The last two episodes were weird. I wouldn't say I hated them but they weren't really a conclusion so I know I'm gonna have to see End of Eva to get the actual picture on how things end. If nothing else though I was glad to see Shinji come to terms with how he views himself since it seems his emotional instability has torn him apart since episode 1. And I have high expectations for the Rebuild films, I hear that in particular the second one is excellent (and different from the TV series in terms of direction) so I can't wait.

Well I personally am a big fan of mecha. The top of the list being something that I notice you like as well, Gurren Lagann. Then there's stuff like Geass, Eureka Seven, Star Driver, and obviously Evangelion. Though in a way I guess I'm not a conventional mecha fan at all. Truth be told I have never watched through a single Gundam series and the only Macross one I ever saw was Frontier (which apparently has LOTS of installments before it) and only because a friend told me to watch it. I seem to like all of the "not really mecha" mechas and that's why I'm fond of the genre. It looks like I've chosen well though because most of the ones I have found are really exceptional.

Yeah I saw the trailer and noticed really fresh versions of a number of scenes I had just seen in the TV series so it was great eye candy. Can't wait to see how the movies go with the story.

Yep, we've had great conversations about it and it really goes to show how excellent of a story it is. So glad I got to watch it.

I agree, it's hard for me to imagine why someone would dislike Eva. I guess some people just don't understand it but who knows.

Yeah I'd agree on Shinji as well. Even if he was whiny it was very believable. I mean any awkward junior high kid would complain about being told to risk his life and pilot some strange mecha he had never seen before in his life for a bunch of people he otherwise does not know or care about. His development was very realistic and his character was so sympathetic that even if his choices weren't always the best, I could never hate him for it.

People say the same about many anime that require thinking. I think the problem is people are so glued to only the mainstream anime so they aren't given a reason to dig deep into the plot. <3

Yeah many of the popular anime are really easy to get into and are more about the flashy action than anything else. It's a sad thing when people dislike psychological anime simply because they don't want to use their brains while enjoying an anime. Stuff like Death Note and Code Geass aren't as mindlessly easy to get into as, say, Naruto or Bleach but in the end they're well worth it and construct superior stories by the end in my opinion.

great series but the last two episodes are a punch in the gut

I didn't think Shinji was that bad. If I were in Shinji's position I'd be just as whiny as him if not even worse.

The way I see it is this: he's a very awkward junior higher who has never, ever received any approval or love from anybody around him. In spite of this, he is expected to risk his life for the sake of others who have never cared about him previously as if they're worth more than his own life and that's something he can't stand. But at the same time, he realizes that if he DOES do this, then perhaps he could be appreciated by those around him and feels that maybe, just maybe the suffering he goes through is worth finally getting the acknowledgement of other people so that he doesn't feel like such trash.

Shinji's character development is really quite fascinating and even if I didn't like him as much as I do, I'd say that the way he grows through the series is very well done.
