Well, Neji tried to save Hinata a few chapters back, from the Zetsu clones so Neji's death was a bit predictable.

Yeah there were signs....I man he almost died against Kidomaru, during the war he was grabbed by a Zetsu. During the night he collapsed. When running to Naruto he said nothing. When everyone lined up against Madara and Obito he wasn't seen.
