I've seen alot of stories where the ultimate bad guy turns into the savior, though the irony is that he saves them from something he caused.

A good example is how in Star Wars expanded universe, Darth Revan and Malak waged a galactic war, but Malak betrayed Revan and he lost his memory so the Jedi gave him another chance even after he had caused billions to die..though he didn't remember.
