How do I tell my career driven parents that I want do 2 years (May 2016-2018) in the peace corps before college?

I'll be going to South America (Brazil to be exact) to be a Child Health Volunteer for local native tribes, I've thought about it seriously for a long ass time and I can say with certainty that this is what I want to do.

IM NOT GIVING UP ON FURTHERING MY EDUCATION!!!!!!

The Peace Corp would be great. If your parents don't understand putting your needs aside to help others, they own that. You just have to decide what's more important to you.

Tell them why it is the best for you, the real reasons. You will regret what you have not done more than what you have done, i know it well. Time goes fast and i have good loads of friends who entered university in their twenties. A friend of mine got in at age 23 (he graduated from high school at 18) after like 3-4 trials because he did not want to be anything other than an architect. A couple years is not throwing away anything and many people give those breaks before college ; you will be doing an actual work there instead of chilling around.

As long as you choose what you feel to do you will have little regrets. If that's how you truly feel about yourself then tell your parents you do not want to have regrets by living a life which is not yours. Promise them that you would come back if something bad happens they might be worrying about your safety too.

PS if they are too much career obsessed go the way Dantee said, search on more proof about how peace corps have positive effect on pe4eonal development and prestige. Search about succesful people who joined them, their interviews or resumes for example.

Convince them it would look really good on a resume.
Depends what he's applying to. Ivy League school? They've seen it before. Might get a slightly interested glance. Tech company after he graduates? That's tough. His membership was over four years previously. That's approaching the level of businesses not caring and probably shouldn't be featured on a resume other than at the bottom.

Do whatever you want. But don't do something like this for your resume.

Hmm from what I noticed employers like people with experience and similar backgrounds. Maybe something in the peace corps will help him apply to a job related to the medical and teaching field.

I seriously didn't know people were still about that peace corp life. Just come out and tell them bro. The more you wait, the more upset they'll likely be. Good luck brotha.

Jesus, I would think they would be overwhelmingly proud that you wanted to do something so ethical. I'd be crying with pride if it was my child and then you want to go to college! The way a lot of kids are nowadays Id be patting myself as a parent on the back for a good job well done.

I don't usually say this but if they are not proud of you for this and college then their priorities are seriously messed up. You could tell them that it will shine on your resume like Dantee suggested if they are that way inclined. Really the best way is to be honest, explain that you are still going to college, still plaining a career but that this is something you need to do and once in college and once in a career you wont have another chance. It's your life, don't have any regrets.

and *hugs* good luck

You should show them a picture of Sakura saving lives of billions of people. Then tell them "if she can do it why can't I?" I am sure by seeing this they will be immensly encouraged to let you go. But in one condition only. If you were to dye your hair pink and wear a pink skirt. Then and only then you would be able to leave.

Just tell them. If you really want to do it, your parent's decision/approval shouldn't matter imo. Although I'm not sure what the perks of the peace corp are compared to other programs; you may actually get funding for higher education. If that is the case you could have that as another reason.
