You can try:
Puella Magi - don't be fooled by the magical girl genre. If anything, it's more shounen than shoujo, since it uses shounen themes as the premise of the story and subverts the traditional conventions of a magical girl anime. Only 12 episodes, I think.
Baccano! - it might be a little confusing and slow but it's full of action (and blood) and gets better towards the end. The premise of the story is quite unique and it's set in the 1930s in Chicago. Only 13 episodes.
Steins; Gate - slow at the start but picks up its pace halfway through the series. It might be a tad confusing but the storyline is well-written. It's 25 episodes.
Shinsekai Yori - not sure you will like it, but it's a horrifyingly brutal and intense anime. It might be a bit slow for the first few episodes but that's because it spends time building up the dark atmosphere. The storyline is very well-written and the plot reaches its climax at episode 20, I think (25 episodes in total) . As long as you can get past Episode 8, then you're fine.
AnoHana - It's a cute anime. Also quite short, only 11 episodes. ^^ Note: I almost shed a tear at the end. Almost.
