You know , i thought of typing out a whole list of dos and don'ts will writing and then after around i hit the 500 hundred word mark on the guide to writing i was posting for you , i thought "what's the point,it's too long"
So here is my extremely shortened advice.
Advice Section
1)Take a course on professional writing. The knowledge of essay writing and the various language skills you have learnt in schools are not suffiecent as they do not address various issues such as how various words and certain lack of details can disengange your reader. An example:Many novice writers love ending they sentences with "-ly" and they end their dialouge or sentences with "thoughtfully, angrily, furiously" and the list goes on.
This may cause the issue of reader's disengagement from your story. When you take up a professional writing course , many issues that cause reader's disengagement would be pointed out so you can avoid making them while you write.
2)Go to Fanfiction.net to read Fanfiction. Try reading the completed ones with above 50,000 words and less than a 600 reviews. When the review count is low , people would probably have dropped the story due to lack of interest or engagement to the writing flow. Read those relatively more flawed stories and take note when you get disengaged from the story. Take note of that author's mistake and avoid them.
3)Start Writing immediately after getting past 10 or so flawed stories. You will probably notice that in most fanfictions , the stories and mistakes decrease nearing the end. This is because the reviewers review that fanfiction and points out mistakes. So , start posting your stories and let people tell you how and why you suck at writing and then , you will improve.
I have read many fanfiction and noticed that many authors , when writing their first stories , usually do very poorly. However , their skill improves greatly in their subsequent stories. Do this and your writing skill will soar.
