please excuse wall of text.

I'm using photoshop cs6 and was trying to make the dashed bored for avatars but I couldn't do it.
Using this tut I followed every step until I got the part when it tells you to make a new layer and make a t shaped pattern. So i made the t shape but when I went to save the pattern it appeared just a black square in the little preview not a t shaped pattern like in the tut, and when I tried adding it to the image the was just black. I think I did something wrong when creating the t shaped pattern, I just don't know what.

LINK where I got the tut.

Didn't read the tut, just use filters-halftone pattern on white layer, this will make stripes, put this layer above your regular border, rightclick the layer you made just now and press create clipping mask. Now you have dashed borders on sides rest is easy I guess?

I suppose you know how to create a border 1pix size.
Create new file 150x300 or 150x200 (NB avatars). Make a new layer where you create your 1pix border(color doesnt matter) rest is transparent. Then on top of it make a new layer, fill it with white (have your 2 main colors black and white, default key for this is D), go to filter-filter gallery-sketch-halftone pattern. Size:3 contrast:50 pattern type:dot, ok.
Now you have black-white layer looking like chessboard. Right click on that layer and press create clipping mask. That makes a dashed border.
