Okay so stay with me as I get all of my thoughts out here. I'm fairly new to Fairy Tale (literally just discovered it last month) but I'm caught up for the most part. I've seen some theories on E.N.D, what the initials stand for, and Natsu's connection with it. I'd just like to add in my 2 cents worth of thought on how Natsu and E.N.D. are connected and why Igneel chose this point to act.
Aspect #1: Natsu's E.N.D
People are theorizing that E.N.D is a darker version of Natsu. I'd like to take this a step further and discuss exactly what that means. I would submit for your approval that Natsu and E.N.D are in fact the same being, created by Zeref hundreds of years before the current time. It is possible that during the creation process that something unforeseen happened, causing the young being to split into two different entities- E.N.D and Natsu. Natsu is the light while E.N.D is the darkness of this being. As such, they are equal and in constant "war" with each other. Some how (perhaps through an unnamed wizard's doing?) Natsu is transported into the future and left unaware of his origins whereas E.N.D was sealed away inside of the book. This would explain most of Natsu's personality, as well as how Zeref knows Natsu and seeks him out while Natsu does not know of Zeref.
Aspect #2: Igneel's purpose
Remember how Natsu met his Uncle Atlas in the Grand Magic Games arc? What if I were to propose that the whole reason Igneel took Natsu under his wing was partly due to that meeting? It would make sense considering Igneel does not seem the type to just foster anyone. Additionally, I would say that Igneel could have been present during Natsu's "birth" or at least made aware of it somehow. He would know that if the book were to be opened and E.N.D revived that Natsu would have to essentially battle his darker half. Igneel's purpose was to raise Natsu to be the strongest and to become the best he could be in order to be ready for such a battle wills. Now that the time has come, Igneel has shown himself in order to assist in containing E.N.D should Natsu fall to his darkness.
And that's basically my theory. I hope you've found it at least a little interesting. Please let me know your thoughts on the matter.
