Unless you say that a conciousness - something that is aware of it's actions - forced life to happen, ultimately it comes down to pure chance.

Deducing said events down to chance now means we can define every physical action, including sentient choices, as pure chance, and that simply isn't a scientific way to think ;)

Saying life started by pure chance alone is a discredit to what Biologists know. What we know is that there is a process, and this process can occur if left to its own devices. Or we can just replicate the results, which you can do if you take the appropriate class for it, such as Organic Chemistry. The only chance that goes into the equation is the location of our planet, which, yes, was one hell of a dice roll. But this is now in the realm of Astronomy, not Biology.

Everything happens either by pure chance or because it was forced to happen by something that we would probably call a conciousness. Sure, it's a huge simplification to say life happened by pure chance, there are presumably a thousand different steps involved in the 'creation' (ugly word, don't know a better one) of the first cell. But ultimately, in the very essence, it's still the truth. Wether a planet is within the goldieck zone? Pure chance. Wether a planet has water? Pure chance. Wether some specific molecules meet within the ocean of a habitable planet? Pure chance.

Unless you say that a conciousness - something that is aware of it's actions - forced life to happen, ultimately it comes down to pure chance.

pretty sure u both are talking about the same stuff just use different words and definitions for the words ;)

Unless we find out what conciousness really is we cannot make that statement. We simply don't know what a "sentient choice" really is. It may or may not be pure chance, there is no way to tell. That's why I specifically said

Unless you say that a conciousness - something that is aware of it's actions -[...]

Since conciousness - whatever that is - might be the exception.

Edit

And tbh, 'pure chance' just means that we can do math (stochastics) to it.

Consciousness is a projection of our brain as a whole and is manipulated by the several regions of our brain to produce several effects, most influenced by our prefrontal cortex which handles our emotions and intelligence. This is different from sentience, which is simply an organism that uses its brain to survive, instead of manipulating the environment around it like primitive species.

But even consciousness is a projection of Physics, because consciousness is a tool of Psychology, which is applied Biology, applied Chemistry, which is applied Physics. Physics is of course the way particles interact with each other. So if we suggest that all objects undergoing an event is by pure chance alone, our consciousness is affected by our environment (which is true and has been tested to be true), which is also by pure chance alone.

It's simply not a scientific way to think. It impedes scientific progress, which we all know we need more of than we ever needed before.

Can we talk about space stuff again please? We can always talk about physiology in another thread. :)

Ok. At this point I'll have to end the discussion (it was fun!).
I believe that we are trying to do different things here. I for one tried to look at the question 'Is it reasonable to say: We are not alone' from a mathematical perspective, where you in the contrary seemed to be talking about biological processes - wich is all fair and good, I see your point, but it does neither have anything to do with my line of arguementation, nor is my line of arguementation any less scientific by looking at the problem from a mathematical perspective for wich we have to assume that there is a certain chance for things to happen.

But I've been at the point before where ppl tried to tell me what conciousness is and I'm not going to go there. We do not know how our brain works. We don't know what conciousness is. Our knowledge of the human brain is about the same as looking at a cpu with only knowing what a transistor is (it's probably even worse than that). Our knowledge of conciousness is even worse: what scientists believe is, that the only thing that is needed for conciousness to evolve is a system of large enough complexity. If that were true the internet would be concious btw. That's how little we know of it!

So pls spare me with that "conciousness is ..." bs, because that is not going anywhere!

I'm gonna take a nap, gn8

Long ago, there was a Face on the Moon, which people thought was either a message from extraterrestrials or a spectacularly-carved rock due to precise puncturing from meteoroids. Both are false, and it took years to figure out that it was just a play of shadows, where an angle can create this image. Another angle pointed at this face found out it was just an ordinary rock.

This image will prove to be no different.

Dude I see that face from down here every know and then it's scary

When they first saw tunnels on Mars, they also thought it's the sign of alien activity.

Yesterday I built the Enterprise out of Legos and twigs, flew to the moon to build my base out of playdoh and am now transmitting this from the center of r136a1 where I'm having a tea party with Picard, Yoda, Frodo and Jack the Frost, who coincidentally loaned me his top-hat which is quite marvelous, I also sport a monocle and a fine handlebar mustache, drinking the finest apple juice in the universe and watching the cast of HIMYM give a lecture on the cosmic distance scale on the Disney Channel

Fine, fine.

As you can see, with better imaging and a different angle with which to take the picture from, the face has been defaced.

face on mars , and its pretty real. it kinda sucks that they hide human history in this form.
