With all the time they had from the time Naruto came back, does anyone but me wonder why Naruto wasn't promoted past Genin? Its not a big deal or anything, but he was clearly strong enough to at least be a Chunin right? Just wondering, do you absolutely HAVE to go through the entire exam to get promoted at all?

It is all about his story. He said at one time that he did not care if he never moved past genin he would still become Hokage.

yes you NEED to pass the chuunin exams and he has always been training or on missions that he has never had time to take them. He was off training with jiraiya for 3 years while everyone else passed it

some positions like anbu/ kage are positons you have to be selected for

chunin/jonin you have to take a test.

Naruto will probly skip chunnin/jonin and go straight to anbu/kage

Naruto was strong compare to an average Chuunin or greater, however, he was training away from the village for 3 years which is the reason why he was unable to make the Chuunin Exams and pass. He had, guessing, chances of being promoted base of his progression during missions, however, he was not a the village. About the being promoted thing, its unknown, but Naruto might have a chance based of respect and fame, and defending the Ninja World.

He never had the chance to take the Chuunin exams, but that doesn't matter for him, even though he is still a genin, he's capable of doing S-Rank missions on his own-.-

i dont know how they expect him to take a chuunin when it would be dangerous and unfair for everyone else if he competed, i presume he would be kicked straight to chuunin with understandin from other villages - but we will see how the story goes and if he gets the hokage rank
hopefully they dont do some shit 20year later balls with him and his children in the hokage office
