I have absolutely adored Naruto for years, but at a certain point I felt that Kishimoto went astray. After the Pain arc, the series started to, in my opinion, rapidly decline in terms of creativity and clarity. Discontent with this, I decided to take pen in hand and write up a collection of adjustments for the series so that it ends without overstaying its welcome and losing thematic focus. I am aware that many of these choices will be highly controversial and I am fully prepared for slander, but I hope that at least some of you will agree with my revisions. Let us begin.
I-Tobi is comical, not machiavellian
Tobi/Obito should reveal his identity when he encounters Kakashi in the woods (after subduing Hinata, Kiba, and Shino, of course). It is at this point that we learn of Rin’s Death and how Kakashi obtained the Mangekyo Sharingan (a personal vendetta against Kakashi makes more sense given Tobi's motivations). Tobi/Obito (who just has an eyepatch in place of a Rinnegan) attacks Kakashi, and the two fight one-on-one with Obito gradually slipping into madness as the fight progresses (think of the Zant duel in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess). However, Kakashi finds himself unable to kill his old friend, and cannot deliver the finishing blow. Obito tries to attack him again but ends up impaling himself on Kakashi’s Lightning Blade. Kakashi buries Obito in the forest where they were fighting, which turns out to be the same one where Kakashi received his Sharingan in the first place. When the other three shinobi awaken, they find Kakashi standing over a makeshift grave, signified by Obito’s goggles that Kakashi had been holding onto as a keepsake. (Also, Obito was never in control of Nagato or the Kyubi.They were acting on their own accord).
II-Sharks, swords, and the end of team Sasuke
As Sasuke pursues Itachi, Kisame becomes an obstacle instead of idly standing by (Itachi is his partner, after all). This leads to Karin, Suigetsu, and Jugo going up against Kisame as Sasuke bypasses him. Karin ends up sacrificing herself by investing her healing chakra in Sasuke. Meanwhile, Jugo and Suigetsu engage in a heated brawl with Kisame, who uses his water jutsu to flood the entire valley (Kiba and Akamaru notice this a while away). Kisame unbinds Samehada and transforms into something that looks rather like this: (
III-Sorry bro, your life is a lie
When Sasuke finally confronts Itachi, the scene proceeds as normal (with the added bit of fried Suigetsu), but the fight is extended by Sasuke’s buffed stamina and some more jutsus by Itachi (also, no Orochimaru cameo, because that was just weird). When the duel is nearing its conclusion, both of them activate an immense flame jutsu at the same time and perform a beam clash, with Sasuke’s eventually winning out. Itachi, instead of transferring the now-nonexistent Sharingan powers (see article IV), sends a vision to Sasuke about what was actually happening behind the scenes this whole time (the same stuff "Madara" tells him in the canon, about the Uchiha rebellion and whatnot). Sasuke just lets it all sink in for a while, then collapses next to his brother. When Naruto and the others reach the spot where Sasuke collapsed, he is gone (but Tobi has nothing to do with it).
IV-Sharingan Solution
The Mangekyo Sharingan powers should end with the Tsukuyomi (though the name doesn’t really work now) and the barrier thing that sliced of Deidara’s arm way back when. The other jutsu Itachi uses during the fight (The Amaterasu, the Susanoo, and maybe some new ones added for good measure) are all obscure jutsu that he had learned during his travels (it is a mimicry jutsu, after all, so let’s see it copy stuff). Madara died a long time ago of old age (or maybe in that clash with the First Hokage), so everything that Itachi and Obito learn about the Mangekyo Sharingan comes from the secret Uchiha library in their fortress.
V-Swatting the Killer Bee
Perhaps it’s just me, but I found Killer Bee to be rather extraneous. It would’ve been possible to just kill him off during the Akatsuki’s hunt for the Jinchuuriki (I could imagine some of the more powerful members taking him). Not only that, but a rapping ninja who looks like the love child of Stevie Wonder and Hulk Hogan seems out of place in the world of Naruto (heck, that seems out of place practically anywhere). Although I admit the scene with him and Team Sasuke was cool, and I know that some people really enjoy Killer Bee, the character felt too much like Kishimoto-san trying to be “hip” and pandering to that "cool" audience. As such, I don’t really see him as a necessary part of the story.
VI-Sticking it to Danzo
Over the course of the Shippuden arc, Yamato/Tenzo should be working under Danzo’s jurisdiction as he does, but should also be spying on him and reporting to Tsunade. Gradually, he should be piecing together the reasoning behind all of Danzo’s sinister plots as well as his real plan for Konoha. When he finally puts all of the pieces together, Tenzo goes to confront Danzo in the Konoha black ops headquarters, hoping to stop him before he screws everyone over. It is then when Danzo reveals his abilities (and those eight Sharingan) and duels with Tenzo, who uses the full extent of his wood powers. The fight goes on until the Pains arrive and start tearing Konoha a new one. Tenzo becomes trapped under the wreckage while Danzo tries to make his escape. However…
VII-Attack on Konoha
Right when the Six Pains reach Konoha and starting tearing the place up, one of them (let’s say it’s the summoner one) notices Danzo trying to escape and recognizes him as the man responsible for Hanzo’s betrayal and thus Yahiko’s death. Naturally, Pain makes a beeline for Danzo and reduces him to a smudge on the pavement. The rest continue ravaging the town as normal. All of the shinobi end up playing a part, as before, but the black ops are in on this too and aid the Konoha shinobi. We also see more of Neji and the Hyuga clan, given that we never actually learned how powerful he had gotten in the time since the incident with the sound ninja. In the chaos, Zetsu infiltrates Konoha and tries to assassinate Tsunade during the Katsuyu jutsu. Sai steps in and uses his ink arts to dispatch Zetsu while protecting Tsunade (Also, let’s say Zetsu was created by Kakuzu instead of Madara). Eventually, the Yahiko pain prepares to Shinra Tensei the whole village, but is stopped at the last second by Naruto delivering a flying kick from behind. Naruto and the Toads arrive just in time and the fight proceeds as normal (this makes for a cooler battlefield as well as removing the questions about “how did everyone survive be squashed?”). With significantly more Chakra, Pain proves to be a much more potent threat, and the Sage Mode doppelgangers end up being consumed by the time there is only one Pain left. Hinata’s intervention occurs in the same way as in the canon, causing Naruto to go tailed beast and engage in a brutal slugfest on the rooftops of Konoha (both of them cause a significant amount of damage, as you can probably guess). As this progresses, Naruto grows more and more tails until he eventually hits eight and Pain uses the Chibaku Tensei, from which Naruto escapes. Now in full Nine-Tails form, Naruto prepares an attack with the capacity to completely obliterate both Pain and Konoha. It is then when he receives the vision from Minato in which he learns about his past. Mustering every bit of willpower he has, Naruto overcomes the will of the Nine-tails and reverts to his normal state. Pain takes this opportunity to rush him and beats the tar out of Naruto with some rapid-fire taijutsu. The final attack sends naruto hurtling towards the ground. When suddenly...
VIII-Sasuke to the Rescue
Right before Naruto would have his spine shattered by hitting the ground, Sasuke comes out of nowhere and catches him. Naruto looks at his friend with disbelief, as does the rest of Konoha. Naruto asks him why he came back. Sasuke says that he has a duty to his friends, and that duty is to aid them in their time of need. Naruto slowly gets back up, and he and Sasuke both leap back onto the rooftops to confront Pain together. Both of them use their entire reservoir of jutsu to maximum potential, utilizing the immense variety of techniques to slowly but surely beat Pain down. Snakes, fireballs, doppelgangers, and rasengans fly everywhere as the rest of Konoha looks on in awe. Eventually, Pain is able to get the drop on them and delivers the Shinra Tensei once more. Naruto uses his doppelgangers to brace himself, as he does in the canon, and then proceeds to send his doppelgangers directly at the final Pain. Pain prepares to fire off another repulsion jutsu when Naruto exploits his ultimate secret weapon: The Ninja Harem Technique. Pain is stunned with confusion as as he is beleaguered by a swarm of naked women, and Sasuke uses this opportunity to deliver a Chidori into Pain’s back. Sasuke shouts out, and Naruto delivers the finishing blow to Pain with his rasengan.
IX-Rezzing is Obnoxious
Naruto tracks Nagato down as he does in the canon and speaks to him in the same way about the world they live in and how there is hope for shinobi to finally obtain peace. Upon completion of the conversation, Nagato thanks Naruto and activates his final jutsu, rebuilding the devastated Konoha. The characters who died in the event STAY DEAD. Kakashi’s character arc was complete (I was happy to see him finally reunite with his father) and I doubt that Nagato, even if he did have to power in this version, would want to bring back Danzo. Besides, the introduction of a resurrection jutsu brings up all sorts of distracting questions (for example, why wasn’t Jiraiya resurrected, why couldn’t Nagato just bring back Yahiko, etc.). Fukasaku ends up surviving Pain’s attack (Hinata did, after all), and he and Shima are there to congratulate Naruto upon his return to Konoha.
X-All’s well that ends well (for maximum effect, listen to this music while reading:
Naruto arrives back in Konoha to a horde of ecstatic villagers, all congratulating for his heroics the boy they had once shunned and feared. Over the credits, we see a series of vignettes of what happens after the events of the Pain attack.
We see Tenzo being recovered from the black ops building and a grave being erected for all those who died during the Pain invasion.
The sand ninja (Temari, Kankuro, and Gaara) come by after hearing about the devastation and look confused when everything appears fine. Naruto and Shikamaru show up to greet them, and the latter is explaining what happens when Naruto suddenly disappears.
Naruto goes to visit Hinata, who is recovering in the infirmary, and finally musters up the courage to ask her out (sorry, Naruto-Sakura fans). She responds by grabbing him and kissing him.
Sakura tries to approach Sasuke again, feeling like a nervous 12-year-old again. Sasuke ends up sneaking up behind her and puts his arm around her shoulder, smiling. Sakura Blushes in reply.
The Akimichi clan throws a huge banquet for the rest of the Konoha shinobi, and even Sai shows up (he almost ticks Choji off again, but he just shakes it off good-naturedly).
Naruto places “The tale of the gutsy shinobi” by Jiraiya’s grave, but this time, Konan is with him. Naruto stays for a while after, until Master Iruka shows up with an invitation to ramen. As they walk off, we see a shot of the mountain, which now has Naruto’s face on it next to Tsunade’s, indicating that Naruto has finally achieved his goal of becoming Hokage.

) Jugo proves to be significantly less useful in the water than he is on land, and ends up being obliterated by Kisame. However, he is able to blind Kisame, and Suigetsu uses that to his advantage by continually sneaking up on him and attacking from odd places. Suigetsu is eventually able to disarm Kisame and force-feeds him Samehada (which kills him, obviously).
