These past few chapters make it look as though Naruto's battle smarts in the war arc are much better than we give him credit for I mean he did:

Save Sasuke and Minato from the Obito transformation

Know Obito's intentions before the SA could figure it out.

Looks like his battle smarts even exceed Sasuke by comparison as of late

Yes, he has steadily improved which has been shown throughout the war arc. Though the points you made do not help this argument. Keep in mind, it is not only Naruto now but also Kurama and his extensive knowledge..

Bold: Sasuke has always shown more battle smarts than Naruto, now that Sasuke hasn't fought seriously for chapters among chapters, you came to the conclusion that Naruto exceeds Sasuke's combat smarts.

Naruto is not generally smart, but that does not mean he's not intelligent

Battle wise, Naruto rivals if not surpassed Shikamaru.

General wise, he has a lot to learn

he always has had high battle smarts, at least tactics wise. observation wise he's been steadily improving, he's no shikamaru or kakashi or even sasuke, but he's getting there. he just gets underrated because he's a goofball.

its like him being in sage mode and Pein absorbing the sage chakra.. naruto didn't do it on purpose, but the sage mode chakra was too much for pein.. so he turned to stone.. it wasn't naruto.. it was his power.. & pein did it to himself.

naruto is smart & dumb at the same time.. like kabuto dsm.. he beats himself in battle somewhat..

I agree I was actually surprised he was able to tell that Obito wasn't going to use the Rinne tensei just by looking at the handseals, he's got to have some really good memory.

Naruto's intelligence is always downplayed due to his childish antics when he actually gets serious he's actually really formidable. (But this is how all Shonen heroes are portrayed)

Naruto was incredibly smart in the battle with Kakuzu.. well he analyzed a weakened kakuzu by sending clones to fight him then he did it again with more clones as a diversion.

naruto fought smart against:

gaara
teaming up against zabuza & haku
kiba
kakuzu

& he wasn't smart against anyone else. he just uses jutsu that beats his opponent.

he went real dumb against Nagato. T_T

THAT is very nice , but he did FORGET Nagato's jutsu right after Nagato used it again.

At least give him some credits, not choosing the dark side while most of his friends and team mates were getting killed by pain.

that's nice, but that was always his choice kinda.. way before Pein.. He wants to be Hokage so the dark side isn't appealing.

Also its just his personality. He shows smarts sometimes though

calling out the Naruto vs pain portion. Naruto did infact realize that if preta would possibly turn to stone
if he absorbed his sage chakra, and so he gathered natural energy. that point you made was irrelevant!!!!!!

AHahahah! What's with that picture?! Ahahaha! And Naruto seems more clever and intelligent than Sasuke on some of the important things, like loyalty and how to lead your life and stuff. In that regard, Naruto is stronger than Sasuke (his heart is stronger I mean) but Im not sure he's smarter than Sasuke, you know? Like during the Deidara vs Sasuke fight, Sasuke was considering things and planning ahead in ways that Naruto probably wouldn't have.

Actually you forgot a few people there.

He fought smart against Pain, using Shadow clones and if it wasn't for Deva regaining it's powers he would have defeated all 3 remaining paths in one combination attack.

He also battled intelligently against the Edo Kages...with Muu he used his chakra arm to surprise him no one was expecting it and with the 3rd Raikage he actually assessed the situation as while everyone was thinking the 3rd Raikage was unbeatable Naruto was the only one wondering how he got that scar on him and tried to formulate a plan. Say what you want that's actually pretty smart especially considering that someone like Temari was also there and she couldn't think of a strategy to beat him.

When fighting Son Goku (Bijuu) he used the shadow clone to make the Bijuu throw up and he even formatted a strategy by knocking the rod out of the Bijuu.

Naruto may not be the smartest person...but when it comes to battles he's a tactical genius as his plans are that unpredictable.

Note I am not talking about general intelligence (otherwise Sasuke beats him handily) just battle smarts. Both have had their moments (sasuke against deidara and naruto against some of the war edo kages) and their moments of stupidity (naruto against pein and sasuke vs the kages at the summit).
