There is the issue that the 10 tails can't be killed anyway, tailed beasts reform after a period of time.

So Naruto doesn't really need to protect it as much as protect everyone from doing something stupid and making the tailed beasts angry.

Sasuke said he wanted to destroy the Juubi with his flames and Naruto was obviously against that. He will stop Sasuke from attacking the Juubi so he can go into its mind and free the Bijuu.

and in terms of taking sides on the spot... yes I can picture the alliance (even and especially shikamaru) agreeing with Sasuke on destroying the juubi. It's risky to extract the tailed beasts from the juubi when Naruto doesnt know anything about how the Juubi was created and how the tailed beasts were extracted from it and divided up. etc.
