How do you know his Rasengan isn't powerful enough to do that?

If you look back to the original Rasengan vs Chidori show-casement between them, Chidori pierced the water-tank, while the Rasengan literally exploded the metal from the inside out.

There's also the fact that we never saw what sort of Chidori Sasuke used, just a Chidori. A variant? We are just to assume so because of the sound, but we never actually saw how big he could make it either.

Lets not forget that in NV Raiton(lightning) has an elemental advantage to Donton(earth). Chidori(and its variants) will naturally be destructive against a meteor.
