there's been a question bugging me since I knew that Naruto is the son of Minato Namikaze.....
.....why is he called Naruto Uzumaki ? shouldn't he be Naruto Namikaze ?

It was probably done to protect him. However it could have also been because the Uzumaki name is more prominent than Minato's surname. My gut goes with the first idea though.

That's because of Hiruzen. He thought that Minato had many enemies, and if people came to know that Naruto was Minato's son then he would be in trouble and that's why he named him as Naruto Uzumaki and not Naruto Namikaze.

Well Naruto Uzumaki has been his identity his whole life s it would be a strange transition, even though the name comes with swag points. Aside from that it didn't seem like he cared if it was shouted from the rooftops after he found out. He did say the line to Kakashi and that was it for the most part until Minato himself showed up in all his zombified glory. After the whole Kaguya fight and the world is saved and things settle down it might get addressed but as for now they don't have time to sign legal papers for name changes or crowning the next hokage.

It doesn't make any sense though. He should have been given a different surname from uzumaki since kushina must have had enemies as well. Those who conspired to destroy the uzumaki clan would also want to kill him. Kishi just didn't think things through

Many jap families use mothers surnames, but the real reasons are to hide his identity, to protect his ass and also from naruto finding out who his parents were. And also the sole survivor of the uzumaki clan

a custom in Japan had the father marry into the mothers family if her family had a higher status. Kushina seemed to have been grooming Minato for this with teaching him secret family tech an all


It is unconfirmed though.

The protect him from Minato's enemies thing originated from fanfiction and is pure speculation. also the fact that other Uzumaki went into hiding changing their names...so the Uzumaki surename certainly had enemies also.
