I think the Uzumakis were a particular shade of red (Mito, Nagato, Kushina, Karin).... however.. come to think of it... i am sure when the clan were shown there were actually others who were full Uzumaki who didnt have red hair; but dont quote me on that (figuratively speaking)

Most of the vagueness revolves around Hashirama and Madara, generations we never really got a whole lot of focus on.

They weren't all redheads but a lot of them were hence why it was a trait associated wirh them. As an incarnate Naruto has the strongest Uzumaki genes yet has blonde hair

Probably because he wasn't a pure Uzumaki and Minato's blonde hair genes were dominant over Kushina's uzumaki red head genes.
