So I re-watched the Naruto ending 15
The ending is starts off kinda low-key and cumbersome but it later picks up the pace and has a nice directive element of new beginning as Naruto runs into the sunset with a small cameo of his Shippuden self
What I am going on about? Well this ending has opened my eyes again as to what was missing in Naruto the series. Social interactions beyond that of misery and drama, and world building.
Look at other great Shonen series:
HXH, One Piece, Toriko, Gintama
What do these have in common? We have character balance with more social build up and interaction. We have large scale world building that adds more mystery as we move along rather then have a globalization effect were the world feel more smaller as we discover more of it with everything either orbiting and reach peak levels with the main protag.
In Naruto Kishi ditches the whole balance idea to focus on Team 7 alone and not in a positive way. What we get is a miserable tale of everyone being depressed while chasing after their friend.
It gets more and more depressing for this squad saving no time for what would happen post achievement in which the story basically ditches everything for this hatred vs non hatred dark tale that only aims for a conclusion after achieving a heavy body count.
If you look at OP yes they face villains but there is a bunch of post villain stuff later were even the villains may later become allies. In Naruto we get some part of this in the beginning but Naruto himself literally reaches peak leadership too early on and basically it comes down to your either with me or damned.
I am not saying we need to tone down the violence or misery but what I am instead saying is that the series should've balanced more characters and also added more social aspects and growth that didn't require misery and death. I mean the only post reflect we get with some villains is a zombie coming back to life in order to repent and then be banished again into the depths of the afterlife with no gratification. Or the dude is dead he gets no character growth since he is dead and then the protag goes off and calls him the coolest guy.
Kishi screwed a ton of things up but by making everything a option of kill or be killed led to the fandom just becoming a fandom of power levels and my fandom will kill your fandom since we don't know shit about everyone else other then some sorrow filled backstory that won't expand upon debate. Oh and shipping wars which most are irrelevant since there was no interactions other then arc to arc in this series.
Gintama has a ton comedy themed arcs but due to all of that its serious arcs tend to have more weight on them since you know most individuals rather then just calling them fodder.
I mean most other Shonen fandoms have larger debates since there are more to talk about. Naruto? not really
World building? Nope we saw all that.... Enemies nope even if there are a twist they'll just die so no point of questioning some other plot changes and alliance formations.
On and on it goes but hopefully you get my point.
