I think it's been part of their combat gear before. All of them had it before?
Naruto wears this red swirl symbol on the back of his jacket. The symbol is worn on the standard uniform of the Chuunin and Jounin, being found on the upper arms and back of the flak jacket.

And I misread the damn question,
One I'd assume Naruto wears the symbol because he's an Uzumaki ..
Two I'd assume Kakashi wears it since he's hokage and the Uzumaki were a well respected clan in Konohagakure.
Just my two cents, though I know most of the hokages didn't wear their symbol.
I don't know I tried again.

Then why doesn't e.g Lee wear that thing while he had that mark on his old jacket?

Maybe they just upgraded their gear and only some of the villagers wear the symbol now?
I mean not everyone wore it before.

Kakashi is now an honorary Uzumaki.
Either that or he just discovered that his mom was an Uzumaki.

"The shinobi of Konoha integrated Uzushiogakure's symbol onto their uniforms and flak jackets as well as on the shoulders of their uniforms as a sign of friendship and goodwill between the two villages, and continue to do so to this day, in memory of their friendship even years after Uzushiogakure's destruction."

Well I'll just say it again ..
I'd imagine as the Hokage, Kakashi must be showing respect for the Uzumaki by wearing their symbol.

Maybe they have a new rank system and that's worn by Jounins or Upper-Jounins, Kages, or the leadership of the village now.

I was going to suggest maybe it's a Fourth War Hero thing (like a medal of honor) but Sakura doesn't seem to have one. Remember how like while the war was going on, all the Daimyo were hanging out and passing the time by talking about the kinds of honors they might want to give out when it's over?

Or maybe Naruto personally gives them out as he appoints folks into different roles for that New Era Project of his.

Or it's an alliance thing. It's supposed to represent "friendship" since it originated with their alliance with Uzushiogakure. So perhaps it's more inclusive now, representing the expansion of their alliance with all of the ninja villages.

Kushina explain the Symbol of the Uzumaki village, its Clan is use in the leaf village for Friendship. You see who do you think negotiated the peace treaty between the Senju and the Uchiha's? The Uzumaki thats who, they already had their village after all they lived on an island alone.

The symbol are worn as a sign of Friendship with the Uzumaki clan being that they are distant cousin's of the Senju.
