A quick glimpse into the enemies’ plans before another brief timeskip*_* (and I mean quick). lol And a pretty surprising reveal (or two) to start and finish on, one of which is sure to surprise and one of which may both shock and displease (depending on who’s fans of who). xd Anyways, enjoy

Chapter 093: Pawns
On the side of a small mountain on the outskirts of the Cloud Village’s borders, at the entrance to a large cavern known only to a select few, Masuku and Denkou waited silently for Dageki’s emergence, following him inside when he finally revealed himself. Nothing was said for the longest time, the only sounds being the flickering of the torches lighting the way and a faint murmuring that grew louder as they walked until finally, the silence proved too awkward for Dageki and he inquired to their previous duty.
Dageki: How many were there?
Masuku: (He maintained a blank face as he shook his head.) He said it doesn’t matter, remember? …How are things progressing?
Dageki: (He clenched his fists as he replied.) …I want to kill them now.
Masuku: (He rested his hand on his shoulder.) Patience, Dageki. …He knows best, you know this.
As Dageki nodded in assurance, the voices coming from the back of the cave reached their peak, their source now separated from them by only a large metal door. It slowly pulled back after Masuku inserted a sixteen-digit number on the keypad off to the side, revealing a large room filled with various scrolls and experimental equipment, both old-fashioned and in sync with modern technology. Towards the back was Otori, seated in a large chair that could easily be likened to a throne, and in front of him, a greatly angered Baiko and Kawari. There was another figure in the room, standing silently off to the side, but the three paid little attention to it as they walked inside.
Baiko: I sacrificed everything for your cause!! And now you’re telling me that I’m completely out of the loop!?
Kawari: I was supposed to be Kazekage right now!! What good are your assassin’s abilities if he couldn’t even slip past their defenses!?
Baiko: …And then you went and started a war when you said all you wanted was the Tailed Beasts. What the hell do you think you’re doing here?
Otori said nothing as they carried on their rambling, only looking up when he noticed Masuku and Denkou’s arrival. He greeted them with a brief nod of his head returned by Masuku before responding to his accusers.
Otori: Everything that’s transpired so far has been for a reason. This peace is nearing the end of its run. The war is completely necessary to allow it to continue.
Kawari: (He gritted his teeth.) You KILLED our KAGE, Otori!! And now you think even more shinobi have to die just so you can get what you want!?
Otori: (He shook his head.) But it’s not just what I want, Kawari. The Kage summit showed that. This is what the villages crave. I’m just presenting it to them on a silver platter.
Baiko and Kawari stared at each other in bewilderment. They were approached by the old man and his subordinates just three months ago to assimilate them into their plans, thinking at the time that they were advancing their own careers, but also benefiting their villages in the long run. Looking back on it now, they couldn’t even remember what he said to convince them, and were disgusted that he actually did.
Baiko: You’re batshit, old man. I can’t believe I ever listened to you.
Otori: (His eyebrows and the corners of his mouth sank.) …Then leave.
Without hesitation, the two scoffed at him and turned to walk away, stopping again when they heard him call out.
Otori: No…not this room.
The confusion that followed was quickly replaced by shock and fear for the two. For Baiko, it transpired soon enough for him to dodge Masuku’s short katana, but for Kawari, it was realized too late to avoid having his neck snapped by Denkou.
Otori: The world.
Baiko’s impressive durability allowed him to quickly transform his fear into rage, a trait which proved helpful in the knife fight that followed between him and Masuku. Though the element of surprise and his heavy training in melee weapons gave the latter a brief advantage, it was the former’s lengthier career and drive to survive that ultimately proved victorious, ending the brawl with a swipe at the arm and a swift kick to the chest that sent his scraggly-haired foe crashing against a fortunately bare table.
Baiko: You bastard!! You’re not getting away with this!! Just watch, as soon as I’m out of here, I’ll tell the whole world about you and your schemes!!
He immediately made a break for the door, intent on making good on his threat, but found himself caught between Otori’s other two subordinates before he could pry it open, both of them stone-faced and arms crossed. As they held him in place, Masuku slowly rose from the shattered table to join them, his hand clenching his chest, but otherwise surprisingly unresponsive to the damage done.
Masuku: IF you get out, I think you meant, Baiko.
Dageki: And that’s a fairly large “if”.
Dageki unfolded his arms and clenched his fists, triggering the emergence of his White Lightning as electricity also began pulsating through Denkou’s fists. As Masuku pulled a kunai, Baiko assessed his situation and was quickly drained of all hope. Seeing just a single opening, he clasped his hands together and puffed his cheeks, intent on going down alongside Otori, who continued to sit calmly on the opposite end of the room. Before he could release the flames built up in his mouth, though, he was forced to cough up blood as a surge of lightning plowed effortlessly through his chest, leaving a gaping red hole in its wake. His last traces of energy were exhausted staring back at his attacker in disbelief before falling wide-eyed and lifeless to the floor below. All of them expecting to get the killing blow themselves, the trio surrounding him turned back in surprise to the other end of the room, finding Otori sitting there with his arm outstretched, the white-colored electricity still coating his hand.
Masuku: Father…
Otori: (He slowly flexed his fingers to disperse the electricity before leaning back in his seat again, no trace of joy or remorse in his face.) I just wanted to do away with that one myself.
They continued to look at one another in bewilderment before dropping the matter entirely, Masuku and Denkou walking back over beside Otori while Dageki took it upon himself to dispose of the corpses. Starting with Baiko, he knelt down beside him and pressed his hand against his back, the White Lightning returning after briefly gathering his chakra. It quickly began tearing through his flesh until there was nothing left, at which point he stood up and walked over to Kawari to do the same, wiping his hands together when only small glistening cinders remained of them.
Dageki: Good riddance.
Masuku: (Watching this from nearby, he looked over at Denkou in surprise when he noticed him using sign language in Otori’s direction.) Why did we ever use them? We knew already that they would never actually end up as Kage.
Otori: (Though it was unnecessary, he watched Masuku as he translated for him, looking back at Denkou in mild annoyance when he finished.) Because it was essential to keep the list of potential suspects as broad as possible. If all five villages are attacked by an unidentified assailant, what is there to trace the assassinations back to the Cloud Village?
Masuku: (He watched with growing concern as Denkou began signing again, putting in his hand on his shoulder and whispering into his ear after a moment.) His “performance” at the summit gave nothing away, Denkou. Mind your place.
Otori: (His eyebrows sank.) Denkou, I hope you’re not questioning-
????: Incoming!
All four of them spun around in surprise as someone else came staggering out of the nearby corridor, a bottle of sake in both hands with one pressed against his lips as he drained it of its contents. He was bald and dark-skinned, though not to the extent of Dageki and Denkou, and was noticeably shorter and more slim in build than the others, with the exception of Masuku in the latter case. His loose-sleeved suit was a few shades whiter than his flak jacket, both of which were surprisingly free of stains, though this didn’t take away from the others’ embarrassment, particularly Dageki’s.
Dageki: Goddamn it, T. Are you drunk already?
T: (He managed a grin as he leaned against the doorway, speaking in between hiccups.) Sorry, bro, I just…got bored. …Thought this group was kinda lacking in life-
Otori: (He turned away in disgust as T knelt over to vomit, shaking his head in mild amusement when he heard it hit the ground.) See to your brother, Dageki. …I swear.
Without hesitation, Dageki rushed over and swung T’s arm over his shoulder, leading him back down the hall, Denkou following them momentarily after a silent request from Masuku. Both he and Otori watched him intently as he disappeared into the darkness of the corridor, the former turning to the latter when he was completely gone.
Masuku: He means well, Father. He knows the risks going into this operation and simply wants to be cautious.
Otori: (He continued gazing into the corridor, standing up and looking down at him after a moment.) Be that as it may, you’re right to tell him to mind his place. I’ve laid out this plan carefully over nearly fifty years. I’ve made no oversights. And I don’t need HIM to start second-guessing me now. …Huhhh, I need some surveillance done for me, Masuku, if you don’t mind.
Masuku: On friend or foe?
Otori: Neither. …I want you to determine where the Tailed Beasts are being held.
Masuku: I thought they were to be the prize for the victor of the war.
Otori: That’s what the Daimyo are being told. But we all know they won’t keep out of the conflict forever…not with what we have planned.
Masuku: (He reflected on the meaning of this briefly, eventually nodding in assurance.) …Yes, Father.
Otori: Oh, and Masuku…
He walked towards the hallway as he garnered his attention once again, pointing off to the other side of the room. Masuku’s eyes were now fixed upon the silent figure that had been standing motionlessly against the wall throughout this entire ordeal, a close look revealing him to be none other than Orochimaru.
Otori: …see to disposing of our friend over there first. I don’t see any more need for him here.
He disappeared into the corridor as he gave the order, Masuku watching him the entire time. He turned to his soon-to-be victim, noting his blank face and unresponsiveness, before walking toward him with his katana at the ready.
Even Orochimaru was powerless against them – just who are these new and frightening foes!!?
The End
