The final showdown starts now!!
Let’s see if the action still holds up after the previous match (I got some great feedback from that*_*). lol Anyways, enjoy
Here’s my previous chapters, for those who missed any:
Chapter 078: Chakra vs. Nature
After his first attack was cut off, Airon immediately jumped on the defensive, hopping back and forth in the vicinity surrounding Nakama before tossing a marked kunai towards the edge of the arena and teleporting to it to escape the growing numbers of pillars rising from the ground. Nakama, making little movement other than the violent fluttering of her hair, kept a small wall of earth elevated around her for added protection as she turned her body to keep Airon in her sights as he took off, running across the stadium at blinding speed as more earthy protrusions shot up directly behind him at every turn. His escape soon brought him in proximity with the arena walls, the ease with which he transitioned onto them as he continued circling the stadium impressing many spectators in it of itself.
Chōjūrō: It seems as though he’s regained all his stamina.
Gaara: I wouldn’t go so far as to say that, Lord Mizukage.
Sensing his confusion, Gaara turned to him and tilted his head in Airon’s direction as the other Kage did the same, eventually making it clear how different his movements were from his previous match.
Konohamaru: His speed has gone down from before, however slightly.
Chōjūrō: (He peered closer to confirm this, adjusting his glasses slightly as he did.) It has…that could easily become a problem later. The matches against her all seem to revolve around speed.
Naruto: (He smirked in amusement upon hearing this.) They do…but Airon is still the fastest genin here, no matter how much stamina he lost fighting Manako.
No one on the balcony could possibly argue against this point, but neither could they ignore Airon’s steadily decreasing speed, Nakama’s pillars continually rising up mere inches behind him.
Z: Cat’s really cuttin’ it close, ain’t he?
Inase: (Her sharp eyes followed Airon around the stadium as she replied.) He’s still exhausted. After fighting Manako, I’m surprised he can muster even half his regular speed.
Hitomi: (He traced Airon’s path across the stadium with his active Byakugan, noting his regular consumption of chakra.) He’s using more than his fair share of chakra just to run along the wall, not only to keep from falling, but to hold on in case she decides to start controlling the wind, too. …He really is taking all the necessary precautions now.
Inase: (She cringed slightly at Airon’s most recent narrow escape as she watched the match with worry in her pupiless eyes.) (He no longer has a choice. …He only has so much energy left to spare if she catches him off guard.)
One such incident occurred just moments later, stemming from a slight misstep on Airon’s part as he ran along the stadium wall. Taking immediate advantage of the situation, Nakama uprooted another spiked pillar directly beneath his feet, forcing him to leap out from the wall and begin running along it as it projected further and further out. As he ran, several smaller spikes protruded from its sides, many of them nearly impaling him until he finally reached the end and leapt off, using a kunai to teleport safely to the ground when Nakama began bending the wind currents to force him back against the wall.
Sakebi: Yeesh, talk about cuttin’ it close. Is he gonna attack her at some point?
Inase: (She lowered her gaze slightly as she watched Airon resume his chase.) He has nothing he can do it with.
Tomoi: (Recalling his previous match, she looked over at her in astonishment.) What the hell are you talkin’ about? What about all that stuff from the last match?
Inase: He had more chakra while he was fighting Manako. Right now, he’s just using enough to maintain his speed and use the Flying Raijin jutsu if he has to. …Besides, most of the techniques he used last round won’t work now.
Z: Why not?
Manako: …Because they require certain chakra natures.
All four of them quickly turned towards Manako in surprise, finding him still sitting against the far wall as he watched his rival scramble about the arena.
Manako: Nakama’s powers revolve around her ability to control the five elements, namely fire, water, earth, wind, and lightning. She can normally only use them if they’re in a pure enough form, so things like magma, metal, and ice are all out of her range. …Things like the Rasenshuriken, though, which is made by molding chakra infused with wind, or even your Lightning Release Armor are well within her capabilities.
Z: (Flinching slightly at his personalization of the remark, he stared back down at Airon with a doubtful expression.) So all his strongest attacks are fodder now.
Manako: (He couldn’t help smiling in amusement at this remark.) Hmhmhm, well, not entirely. That’s where Airon has an advantage most shinobi don’t, because most of his arsenal consists of techniques that’re either made out of or require only pure chakra. …Even if he doesn’t have his strongest ninjutsu, he has more than enough techniques to use against her in their stead.
Z and his teammates marveled at this as down below, Airon pulled out three kunai as he circled around Nakama, unable to get closer due to her ever-present defense. Feeding his string through the ends of their hilts and tossing them, he waited until they had reached a certain distance before tugging on the string and allowing them to swing back around, quickly building momentum as they went. Pouring chakra into them by channeling it through the string, they successfully broke through three walls of earth conjured up by Nakama as they circled back her way, only to be stopped short of reaching her by a fourth wall and the continuous presence of an opposing wind. Aggravated by the attack’s failure, Airon proceeded back up the wall of the arena, stopping when he realized she had done so, as well. They proceeded to lock eyes for a moment, the intense expressions on their faces upholding until they finally loosened up and were replaced with warm smiles.
In the forests on the outskirts of the Leaf Village, the duel between the genins’ younger selves reached a standstill of its own at Airon’s behest, currently being overwhelmed by Nakama’s earth and – as he had just witnessed for the first time – wind attacks.
Airon: Huhh…huhh…whew. Man, that’s brutal.
Nakama: (Having been using her powers continually for over twenty minutes, she fell to her knees and began breathing heavily.) So, can we stop now!?
Airon: Ha! Are you kidding me!? Not a chance!
Nakama lowered her head in frustration, though despite his Airon’s claim, he proceeded to drop to his knees, as well, reaching into the bag on his back and pulling out two small bottles of water as he did.
Nakama: You’re stopping to take a drink?
Airon: (He merely smiled up at her after taking a swig from one of the bottles.) Guess you can say that.
Holding the other bottle behind his head, he proceeded to chuck it a fair distance away, not even remotely close to where Nakama was sitting, much to her confusion and protest.
Nakama: What’re you-
Airon: Catch it!
Almost immediately, faint movements could be seen in her hair and the bottle, rather than land on a strip of earth or a gust of wind, proceeded to stop in midair and hover back towards her, prompting Airon to grin as it landed in her outstretched hands.
Airon: I knew it.
Nakama: Huh?
Airon: I saw you move the earth and started thinking about it, then I saw you use the wind a few times and started putting all the pieces together. …And I was right. You can move water. So I’m guessing you can move fire and lightning, too.
Nakama: (She looked down at her bottle for a moment in thought before looking back up at him.) Well…yeah. I guess I’ve done it a couple times. …Why do you wanna know, though?
Airon: Hehe, cause I wanna see everything you can do.
Nakama: But why?
He couldn’t help but be amused by her asking this at first, but after seeing in her eyes what a genuine question it was to her, his smile grew much more cordial and understanding.
Airon: Because once you know you can do something, you can work to get better at it. …And if you can move all five elements, THAT’S something I wanna help you learn to master. …Who knows what you could do then?
They’d met only thirty hours ago, and Nakama continued to find herself astonished by every other thing Airon said. Having only used her powers berserkly as a means of self-defense until now, the notion that she was controlling the five elements commonly associated with chakra had never truly solidified in her mind, nor had the idea of actually mastering her control over them. Perhaps more evident to her, though, was her acceptance of this idea, even her willingness to go along with it. Several minutes ago, she protested against so much as a medial spar, but the thought of Airon helping her train stimulated her, and she couldn’t help but return his smile because of it.
Back in the tournament stadium, their warm expressions had taken on hints of amusement as Nakama reached beneath her coat and pulled out the water bottle given to her before the match began, prompting Airon to fiddle his tongue between his teeth before smiling up at Inase in mild annoyance.
Airon: (Alright, which of you traitors decided to give her water? I’m looking at you first, little sister.)
Inase: (She chuckled softly to herself as she turned to face the true culprit.) (Hmhmhm, don’t blame me. Look a little further to your left.)
Airon: (Following her eyes, he smiled and shook his head as his gaze landed on Kūrogane.) (Is this payback for always saying you shouldn’t smoke?)
Kūrogane: (Well, you should’ve kept your nose where it belonged. …Hmhm, no, but I assumed you wanted more of a challenge than just earth and wind, even if you were low on chakra.)
Airon: (He glanced over at Nakama momentarily before smirking in acknowledgement.) (Hmhm, touché. As long as you didn’t give her fire and lightning, too.)
Kūrogane: (Now how would I be able to do that?)
Just moments later, Nakama let go of the water bottle, allowing it to float in the air as she reached into her coat and pulled out a lighter, sneakily handed to her by Manako. Catching onto this after only a few seconds, Airon gazed up in playful annoyance at his “double agent”, who chuckled in amusement as his rival sought out Baiko.
Airon: (I can think of a few good ways. …Man, this is gonna suck.) You might wanna get to higher ground than that, Proctor! …Things are about to get ugly.
Already a step ahead of him, Baiko sped towards the edge of the arena and up the wall to safety, ludicrously irritated by how many times he’d been forced to do this over the course of the tournament. Flexing his still aching shoulders, Airon tightened his grip on the two kunai in his hands as Nakama struck a match, both of them exchanging smiles.
Airon: (Alright…show me what you’ve learned.)
Almost immediately, the single flame produced by the match swelled into a fiery serpent that coiled around her body as the bottle beside her exploded, its contents expanding into a watery equivalent that proceeded to do the same.
Nakama: (I’d be glad to.)
Airon has enough strength left to avoid Nakama’s earth and wind attacks, but how will he fare against fire and water!!?
The End
