Alright, onto another multi-chapter fight (with quite the interesting match-up, too*_*). The little factoid towards the end I actually added in recently when I rewrote a good deal of the plot, so be sure to give me your thoughts on it. Anyways, hope you enjoy:)

Here’s my previous chapters, for those who missed any:

Chapter 057: Glass Sharingan

Keeping with her generous streak throughout most of the tournament, Nakama’s earthy walkway surfaced once again, this time for Sabure and Manako to make use of. The two didn’t notice at first, though, their eyes still locked and their faces laden with determination. It wasn’t until Manako cracked a smile that Sabure turned away again, her face now red, and walked towards the first pillar, subtly showing her gratitude before stepping over the railing.

Sabure: Thank you, Nakama.

Nakama responded with a smile as she began walking down, following shortly by Manako, who was cut off by his rival just before he could step onto the railing.

Airon: (Don’t waste too much chakra on her, Manako. …I want you at your fullest strength possible when we fight, you hear me?)

Manako: (He smirked over at him before taking off after Sabure.) (You talk as if we haven’t known each other our whole lives, Airon.)

Once he had reached the bottom, the pathway returned to the ground and Airon leaned over the railing again, forced to turn around moments later by a familiar voice echoing through his mind.

Inase: (You really think he’ll waste too much energy on this match?)

Airon: (He smiled as he spun his head around, finding his sister standing by the opening leading into the stadium corridors.) (Given her lineage, it’s not an impossibility. …Why are you out here? You’re obviously not healed up all the way yet.)

Inase: (She returned his smile as she walked up to the railing and leaned over it right next to Airon.) (I have you on hand for nonsense like that. Besides, Manako’s going up against the Kazekage’s granddaughter, the one with a kekkei tōta. I’m not lying in a hospital bed while this is happening.)

Airon: (He took a moment to think about this before responding.) (And Kei is?)

Inase: (She smirked at him as she replied.) (That lunkhead fell asleep while we were being carried to the infirmary. Besides, I don’t think he likes watching fights as much as he does being in them, anyways.)

Airon chuckled softly at this and nodded in agreement, while throughout the stands, everyone sat in silence as they awaited the beginning of the match. Up above them, the Kage took notice of this and commented accordingly.

Kurotsuchi: Well, I think it goes without saying this is the match most people were waiting for this round.

Konohamaru: Hmhm, seems that way. I’ll be perfectly honest, Gaara, I’ve been awaiting this particular match myself. …I’m quite eager to see how your granddaughter holds up against Manako.

Gaara: (He stared over at Sasuke as he responded, his sny remark from before still dancing in his head.) You’re hardly the only one, Lord Hokage. …Hardly the only one.

Darui: You have any thoughts on what the outcome will be, Hokage?

Konohamaru: Hm? …Well, at this point, all I know regarding Sabure is the nature of her kekkei tōta and what Lord Kazekage has said of its power level. I’ve seen Manako in combat several times and I can say for certain that Sabure will need much more than a rare technique if she intends to stand toe-to-toe with him.

Chōjūrō: (He gazed down at Manako upon hearing this.) I’ve heard similar things of Manako Uchiha throughout most of these exams. I recognize his speed from the preliminaries, but that aside, everything else we’ve heard about him is purely word-of-mouth, and even those details are vague at best.

Konohamaru: (He smiled at Chōjūrō’s doubts as he looked down at the arena floor.) Hmhm, well, that can only mean that the details being held back are too incredible to explain using words alone. Just watch the match, Lord Mizukage, and I assure you you won’t be disappointed by what you witness.

This assurance brought their brief dialogue to a quick end and all five Kage turned their attention towards the impending match. The three seasoned shinobi standing in front of them were also staring down, specifically at Manako, each of them with the same thought on their minds.

Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura: (Come on, Manako. Time to show them what you’re really capable of.)

In the stands below them, their respective sons also shared their thoughts on the match-up.

Boruto: He’s more powerful than either of us can take credit for, Itachi. …He’ll win this match, for sure he will.

Itachi: (He nodded in response, his weary eyes fixed on his son standing at the center of the arena below.) …Yeah.

Just one section over, the latter’s older sister and her family, including a previously defeated Akame, sat together in wait for the fight to begin, giving their own respective views on how it would play out.

Sarada: This is looking to be a pretty unpredictable match-up. Manako’s definitely strong, but…I dunno enough about the Kazekage’s granddaughter to say she’s really an easy opponent.

Tamanoko: (He rested his hand on top of hers, smiling as she looked up at him.) I think all the easy opponents have been weeded out by this point, hon…but I also know how strong Manako is, and whatever she throws at him, there’s no way he won’t find a way around it.

She returned his smile in appreciation for his kind words, while their son sitting beside him tried to add in a few of his own, gazing over at his sister as he spoke.

Katsuto: Yeah, Manako’s definitely got this, Mom. You can always count on him to live up to our clan’s name…even when there’s others that lose to lazy bums from the Nara clan.

Akame: (She quickly grabbed ahold of his ear as she retorted, her head resting against her other hand.) …I could flatten you with my little finger right now if I wanted to. Now watch the match and shut up.

Further up that same section sat Hinata, still seated with Neji and his own family, as she gazed down at the arena floor with worry in her eyes, her hands clasped together in front of her mouth as she anxiously awaited the start of the match.

Hinata: (…You can do it, Manako…)

Down below, Manako and Sabure had taken their positions on either side of Baiko, the former wearing a somewhat amused expression while the latter nervously shifted her eyes towards and away from him repeatedly, her face still red from before. Just as Baiko began his final inspection of the two combatants, Manako broke the silence with a declaration of his own.

Manako: From what I’ve heard, your Glass Release is a defense that’s yet to be breached by anyone, Sabure. Now, I admit that I don’t overdo things like Airon does, but I do share his wicked sense of humor when it comes to records. …Your glass is going to be shattered today. You can count on that.

Sabure: (Her embarrassment immediately disappeared upon hearing this, and she took a battle-ready stance as she stared at him with determination in her eyes.) Like I said, I have a bloodline to uphold. …Not even someone from a clan like the Uchiha is gonna stand in my way.

Smirking at this display of confidence, Manako took his own stance as Baiko raised his arm to begin the match.

Baiko: Alright…if both of you are ready…begin!

Sabure wasted no time forming a quick hand sign, activating her technique and prompting a thin sheet of glass to begin coating her forearms, extending out past her fingers until they ended at a sharp point. Seeing this, Manako unsheathed his sword, which immediately began surging with lightning-enhanced chakra.

Manako: Okay…we’ll start with the basics.

With that, he charged forward and attacked her head-on, forcing her to hold up her makeshift blades to fend off his attack. However, despite the enormous increase in cutting power the added chakra gave his sword, the glass remained intact as they collided, prompting Manako to pull back and follow it up with yet another swipe of his sword. This quickly converted into an all-out swordfight in which Manako clearly had the upper hand with his superior swordsmanship, something his grandfather took note of as he turned back to face Gaara.

Sasuke: Hmph, the match just started and he’s already overwhelming her. …I hope you have more to offer than that, Gaara.

Gaara: (He seemingly ignored his remarks, his eyes still fixed on the match below.) You’re mistaken, Sasuke. …Sabure isn’t even fazed by these attacks…nor is her defense.

Sasuke quickly turned back around upon hearing this, while down in the stands below, Manako found himself being yelled at by Sabure’s opponent from the preliminaries, whose methods were quite similar to those he was using now.

Tomoi: What the hell are you trying to do!? I already tried using that on her, remember!?

Sakebi: (He lowered his head and pressed his hand to his face, praying everyone was too preoccupied watching match to stare at them.) (The match only lasted a minute or two, Tomoi. Why the hell would he remember it?)

Manako did remember, in fact, and he leapt back and away from Sabure after allowing their duel to continue a moment longer, returning his sword to its sheath.

Manako: (Hmm, I assumed it was just that girl’s incompetence with a sword…but maybe the glass really is that strong.) I retract my promise from earlier, Sabure. …I might have to use my full arsenal right from the start.

He immediately formed a few hand signs after making this statement, Sabure’s resulting worry prompting her to coat the remainder of her body in glass, as well.

Manako: Fire Style: Great Dragon Flame Jutsu!!

An enormous stream of flames suddenly burst forth from Manako’s lips, soaring above the stadium walls as it gradually morphed into the shape of a dragon’s head. It slowly drifted across the sky for nearly a minute on end, those in the audience gazing up at it in awe, including the Kage and their subordinates.

Ryoku: That jutsu…it has to be B-rank, at least.

Sasuke: (He smiled at this, proud that Manako’s brilliance was being acknowledged.) A-rank, in Manako’s case…and he barely wasted any chakra using it.

While some of those behind him looked down in amazement, Manako finally brought the blazing heap crashing down on Sabure, forcing the audience to cover their eyes and Baiko to quickly leap away to safety. The smoke and heat from the technique persisted for over a minute before finally fading away, revealing Sabure to survived it unscathed, thanks to her impenetrable defense. Some of those in the stands heaved a sigh of relief, including Gaara, while others question Manako’s motive for the attack, including Darui.

Darui: Was he…trying to melt the glass?

Sasuke: (He looked back at him for a second before gazing up at the sky, smiling at what he found.) That looked like his intention…but that jutsu is useful in other ways, as well.

Tipped off, those around him also began looking up, finding that the skies above the stadium were now covered in dark clouds, from which a strange creature seemingly composed of pure lightning manifested. Recognizing this technique from long ago, Naruto smiled and looked at Sasuke.

Naruto: Ah, there we go. …Sheesh, I hope he doesn’t kill her.

Sasuke: (He motioned to nod in agreement, but quickly stopped himself upon realizing how disingenuous it would’ve felt.) (Come on, Manako…hold nothing back.)

Manako: Lightning Style: Kirin!!

With just a swift motion of his hand, he guided the lightning on top of Sabure, who was staring up at it with bulging eyes, as was her grandfather.

Gaara: Sabure!!

The impact shrouded the entire stadium in blinding light, which vanished only seconds later, revealing to the astonishment of everyone that Sabure had once again survived Manako’s attack, albeit with her defense almost completely shattered. Catching her breath and getting past the initial shock, she looked up at her attacker and smiled deviously as all the cracks and chips her armor had sustained during the strike gradually closed up.

Manako: (That’s impossible. Glass can’t possibly withstand a direct hit from a lightning bolt…just how strong is it?)

Naruto: Even Kirin…he might be in trouble, Sasuke.

Sasuke: (Still in shock, he quickly snapped at him for putting doubt in his mind.) Don’t start with that, Naruto. He still has the upper hand here. …Just keep watching.

Naruto merely shrugged this off and looked back down at Manako, worry still in his eyes. With Manako now at a loss for what move to make next, Sabure immediately took the offensive stance.

Sabure: I guess you’re all done for now. …My turn, then.

The glass blades that coated her arms gradually began growing and morphing into various shapes, eventually coming together to form what appeared to be two double-headed spears, each coated with numerous smaller blades on every side. Once they were completed, she dashed forward, lashing out at Manako in the same manner he did her when the match began. Now hesitant to pull out his sword for fear it may break in the impending duel, Manako kept it sheathed and proceeded to use his advanced reflexes to avoid her swipes, which proved highly successful given the wide gap between them in speed.

Naruto: Damn. Can’t believe he’s already been forced on the defensive.

Sasuke: (Still upset about Kirin’s failure, he lashed out at him yet again before turning back towards the match.) Would you shut up, idiot? He’ll turn this around before long, and besides, it’s not like she has a chance in hell of landing a hit. (There’s gotta be something that can break through that glass…what the hell is it?)

The two were hardly the only ones who began doubting Manako’s chance of success, as a short ways away, Irezumi confided in Airon about the same subject.

Irezumi: She guarded against all of his most powerful techniques…honestly, I never thought I would doubt Manako’s chances of beating an opponent when it came to anyone other than you, Airon.

Airon: (He chuckled at this as he responded.) Hmhm, well, you’re wrong about two things. For one, I’m hardly the only one who stands equal with Manako in a fight. …That deadlock of ours has always been a trifecta, you know that.

Irezumi: (He glimpsed over at Nakama before replying, who was smiling in light of Airon’s previous remark.) Okay, and the other thing?

Airon: (His smile vanished as he gazed back down at Manako.) …That he’s already used all of his most powerful techniques.

Having never seen a technique more powerful than Kirin, Irezumi was immediately intrigued by this and stared down at Manako in wonder, his attention hindered once again by yet another new arrival from the hospital wing.

Ryūza: It doesn’t matter if that was his weakest technique…he’s never breaking through Sabure’s glass armor.

He simply gazed down at his sister after saying his piece, not even bothering to make eye contact when both Irezumi and Airon looked up at him. They didn’t waste any time waiting for a response before turning away, the latter with a confident smirk.

Airon: Hmhmhm, we’ll see how things play out.

Taigen: Uhhh, hey there, Ryūza. …N-no hard feelings, right?

This remark immediately caught Ryūza’s attention, prompting him to spin around as a vicious scowl illuminated his face and forced Taigen to cower behind Airon, later behind Minto when Airon fell to his knees laughing. Down on the arena floor, Sabure’s attempts to attack Manako continued to fall short, much to her frustration.

Sabure: (Jeez, this guy’s fast. It’s like he’s predicting all my moves. …Maybe I oughta switch things up a bit.)

Leaping back and disposing of her makeshift weapons, which quickly dissolved back into chakra, she clasped her hands together and pressed them against the ground, prompting a thin sheet of glass to appear beneath them and begin spreading out from its original point. Recognizing her intentions right away, Manako leapt backwards as the glass came near him and continue spreading outward, by now having covered roughly one quarter of the vast arena floor.

Konohamaru: All that ground covered…I’m very impressed, Gaara.

Gaara smiled in light of this remark before glancing over at Sasuke, who was apparently deep in thought, scanning the arena with his Sharingan.

Sasuke: (Her chakra’s surging through every inch of that glass, and she’s still got a lot of it left. Plus she’s able to change its shape…no. No, there’s no possible way. Manako can work his way around anything she tries…surely.)

These self-assurances were hardly out of arrogance, as Manako was having similar ones down below, as he continuously retreated back and out of the glass’s range.

Manako: (She’s trying to form a dome around me, so I just need to stay outside the parameters of the glass and I should be fine. …She can’t possibly cover this entire arena without exhausting all her chakra.)

Sabure realized this, as well, and with him still managing to outrun her technique, her doubts only increased.

Sabure: (He’s moving so fast that I can’t surround him quick enough. I’ve gotta find some way to hit him from every direction so he can’t escape…oohhhh…)

At long last, she brought the glass’s advance to a halt, by which point roughly two-thirds of the arena floor had been blanketed by it. Manako stopping his retreat, as well, he watched in confusion as the sheet of glass gradually retracted back towards Sabure, who was now keeping one hand pressed against the ground while her other hand pushed against a large pillar of glass that had begun forming directly beside her. It continued to grow taller long after all the glass that had been on the ground was drawn back towards it, leaving many in awe at its sheer size and others as to her purpose in building it.

Naruto: What the hell is she doing now?

Sasuke: (Its size alone giving him unease, his uncertainty regarding Sabure’s plans with it prompted to look off towards his grandson in worry.) I don’t know, but I don’t like the looks of it. (You might want to prepare yourself, Manako.)

Manako was well aware of his fact, but with no idea yet what Sabure was attempting to do, he continued to watch as the tower of glass rose above the walls of the stadium, his eyes widening once it stopped and the edges began spreading outward, eclipsing the entire arena with a sheet of glass.

Manako: (It’s a canopy!)

Sabure: You might wanna duck and cover, proctor! Falling glass is no joke!

Baiko: (Having just realized this before she spoke up, he stumbled as he formed a hand sign.) Uhhh, good point.

As he disappeared in a gust of wind, Sabure stood back up, her enormous structure finally complete. Her armor still intact, she molded the glass over her left arm to form another makeshift blade before channeling more chakra through it, ensuring it had sufficient cutting power as she drilled into the side of the glass monstrosity next to her.

Sabure: Dodge this, Manako Uchiha!!

Almost immediately, fissures opened up where her blade entered the pillar, which quickly spread throughout the entire structure until, in one fell swoop, it burst into shards of sharp glass that encompassed the entire area of the arena floor. Realizing this gave him no room to dodge them, Manako quickly formed a few hand signs in an effort to create an opening for him to slide through.

Manako: Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu! (Just needs to lose a little momentum, come on.)

The huge ball of flames engulfed a fair section of the glass, but to Manako’s dismay, the shards it collided with simply fazed through it and continued to fall at the same pace, completely resistant by the attack.

Manako: (No effect. And I don’t have any earth-based techniques, either. …Guess I have no choice.)

Sasuke, Naruto, Sakura, Itachi, and Hinata: Manako!!

The glass fell, almost completely shredding the leaves off the trees in the far section of the arena, while several other pieces found themselves sticking into the ground or falling flat against the surface. With her armor protecting her, Sabure survived the bombing with ease, but to her shock, so did Manako.

Sabure: What the-!?

She stopped mid-sentence, overcome by fear as she stared at the large mass of bone and tissue now surrounding her opponent, which was covered in an aura of strange black energy.

Z: Holy shit!

Ryūza: He fended it off…impossible.

Irezumi: (Now certain what other powerful techniques he was referring to, he glanced over at Airon in astonishment.) What is that?

Inase: (Having only ever heard about it, she was as shocked by its appearance as the others.) It’s called Susanoo, an incredibly powerful technique accessible only to those with a special variation of the Sharingan. A nearly indestructible spirit that attacks and defends in the user’s stead.

Airon: (He couldn’t even smile at the sight of his rival’s power on display, well aware of what he went through to attain it.) Or when simplified further…it’s the manifestation of Manako’s inner despair.

All across the stadium, other members of the audience, even those in Manako’s immediate family, stared in horror or amazement at the sight before them, one which even the Kage sitting overhead found difficult to accept.

Gaara: Susanoo…it can’t be.

Kurotsuchi: That technique can only be used by a very select few…this boy can’t really have the-

Sasuke: I’m afraid he does, Tsuchikage…and it seems your granddaughter was able to force him into using it, Gaara.

Gaara couldn’t even process this sly compliment he was just given, his mind and those of the other Kage still bent on determining the source of Manako’s newly revealed power.

Mei: But at such a young age, and in peace times, no less. …What could have brought that boy such agonizing pain?

Chōjūrō: (Recalling what knowledge he had of them and the requirements for obtaining them, he looked over at Sasuke in concern.) He’s not a…murderer, is he?

Sasuke: (He slowly shook his head.) Manako was three years old when he first awakened it, just months after obtaining his Sharingan. …His mother was the stimulus. His birth brought with it dreadful after effects that she carried with her for years, only her love for Itachi and desire to be there for her new son pushing her along. …She was so small and frail when they finally took her life, all of us could only watch from her bedside as she slowly faded away.

He traded sorrowful expressions with Sakura before continuing.

Sasuke: Though his cold demeanor would probably suggest otherwise, Manako’s affinity for love far exceeds what any member of the Uchiha clan before him can take credit for. …He loved his mother so much, the sight of her lifeless body was enough to awaken his Sharingan right there on the spot. Even so, he always did his best to get over the pain of her being gone, and had succeeded for the most part…but then he accidentally stumbled upon the truth. How she had been carrying that sickness for over three years, and how it had been triggered by his own birth. …The overwhelming sadness he must have felt at that moment, and the guilt he must have felt seeing how much it affected those around him, especially his father. …He awakened them that same day, pushed to it by the realization that he had effectively killed his own mother.

Darui: (Unsure how to respond to such a horrible story, he did so with the only question truly worth asking.) And who was his mother?

Sasuke didn’t reply to him, instead turning to Naruto, who had kept his head lowered the entire time he spoke. He was fighting through tears as he gave Darui the answer.

Naruto: It was my daughter…Himawari.

As everyone stared at Naruto in astonishment, Manako slowly opened his eyes as a terrified Sabure looked on. Against the black background stood a red pattern likened to a nuclear reactor symbol, an obvious allusion of the explosive power that rested within.

Manako reveals his Mangekyō Sharingan – the product of his tragic beginnings!!!

The End

I liked that Airon wants Manako at full strength so Naruto/Sasuke-like ^^ It’s nice to see that Manako’s skills more or less remain a mystery =D I love that Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura each rooted for Manako! ^^ Wow that compliment coming from Boruto was unexpected and awesome! Oh boy, it’s Sarada-Sasuke and Sakura’s daughter and in my honest opinion, she looks her an offspring from Karin and Sasuke rather. For having Sasuke/Sakura as parents who’re attractive, she should’ve been a hell of a looker but instead is unfortunately freakin fugly. I don’t mean to offend anybody by my comment and I’m trying to visualize that she went from ugly duckling to bombshell beauty in your version. I loved the brief Uchiha sibling bickering that took place before Manako’s fight began lol Even support from Hinata-I can’t get enough of all of this support for Manako! =D Okay, I kind of noticed this earlier but now, it appears my speculation is correct about Sabure’s attraction towards Manako. Okay, can’t remember if Manako ever used a sword before but whether or not he did, I’m absolutely loving that he’s following in Sasuke’s footsteps or at least with his swordsmanship! =D Wow, I’m just shocked that Manako cannot break through her glass defense. Just more and more of Sasuke’s jutsu are displayed by Manako! ^^ I wonder if the reason for how he attained Susanoo will come to light. And so it was revealed, such a sad and unfortunate truth as to how he obtained it. So Manako is also an Uzumaki/Namikaze-which is EPIC!!! I really enjoyed this chapter and the fight still continues! ^^

Yeah, Sarada was originally Tsunade before the manga ended and I adapted accordingly, and I essentially described her as her namesake with pink hair. lol A little different now with glasses and different hair color and all, but pretty much the same.

Yeah, he and Airon first used them in the Forest of Death and do so quite a bit. It's one of their more common fighting styles since it emphasizes Manako's reflexes and Airon's overall brilliant swordsmanship:) And yes, bit of a crush going on there (which is pretty funny when you consider whose granddaughter it's coming from). lol

Yet another thing I added in my plot rewrite when the manga ended. I try to put that distinction to excellent use later on in the story.

Was waiting a while for feedback to this chapter and I'm lovin' it, man. Appreciate it*_*

Well, wonderful recovery with Tsunade/Sarada! ;)

Nice to hear that about Manako and Airon and yes, you’ve confirmed it! Indeed it is ironic that Gaara and Sasuke who’re not each others favorite people at the moment could entangle if Manako notices are falls for her as well! O.O

Again you’re doing just a phenomenal job with the canon manga incorporations! ;)

Well yeah, but I was really just referring to Sabure as Gaara's granddaughter. I mean, we're all familiar with his personality traits. lol
