This one was tough to work out (I already had the result set in my mind), but hopefully, I made it work in the end. As always, enjoy

Chapter 053: Into the Danger Zone
Baiko: Would Taigen and Ryūza please make their way to the arena!?
This was the second time Baiko had asked this since the end of Kūrogane and Hitomi’s match-up, the audience rapidly reaching his same level of impatience. It was hardly Ryūza’s fault for this, as he had already taken his place on the arena floor, but that of his opponent, who had coiled himself around his teammate’s leg and refused to let go.
Minto: Taigen, get off my leg and get down there now.
Taigen: (He continued shivering and shook his head rapidly in response.) One hit, Minto. He just needs one hit. He’s gonna get it, I know he is. He gonna-
Minto: Taigen, I’m gonna give you one hit if you don’t get-!
He raised his fist to make due on his threat, only to have his arm grabbed midway by the onlooking Airon, who knelt down in front of Taigen with a gentle smile on his face.
Airon: Taigen, what if I break it down for you like this?
He reached out and placed his hand on Taigen’s shoulder, relieving most of the tension in the young boy’s body almost immediately.
Airon: (Ryūza specializes in sand techniques like his grandfather, we’ve all seen that already. However, he also excludes himself solely to creating sinkholes, which means the chances of him using his sand in an unexpected method is low. You’re light on your toes and quick on your feet, which should make avoiding the sinkholes easy for you, plus from what I’ve seen, Ryūza’s sand barriers are nowhere near as strong or as fast as the Kazekage’s. …Now, having said all that, what do you think the chances are that you’ll be able to land a decisive hit on him before he lands one on you?)
He took in every word, but Taigen was still hesitant to make his way down to the arena, reacting only after a sudden surge through his body brought his widening eyes in line with Airon’s own.
Airon: You’ve got this, Taigen. …You’ve got this.
He needed no time to wait for Taigen’s answer, as he had leapt up and over the railing of the balcony, a look of newfound determination on his face. Their peers from the Leaf village recognized this implications of this silent exchange and made no responses toward it, though Sabure was much less soft-spoken.
Sabure: You said something to him, didn’t you?
Airon: (He stood up and leaned over the railing, a playful smile present on his face.) I’m not telling.
Sabure: (Seeing through this, she scoffed silently and redirected her gaze back towards the arena.) Just you watch, then. That kid doesn’t stand a chance. …My brother’s a stronger ninja than you could ever imagine.
Cocky as the reaction might’ve seemed, Airon and Manako couldn’t help but exchange amused expressions before looking back towards the arena. A few stories above them, a few others familiar with Taigen’s particular disposition commented on the genin’s partaking in the tournament.
Konohamaru: So…he actually decided to fight.
Naruto: Sure hope the kid gets through this all right. …Got a lot on the line here.
Sasuke: (He answered his rival’s concerns with a quick scan of the genin, courtesy of his Sharingan.) It looks like he’ll be just fine. …I see a little gift from your grandson inside him right now.
Surprising by this, Naruto looked down at Taigen for a moment before etching a gentle smile across his face, pleased as always with Airon’s naturally generous disposition. Down below, Taigen took his spot directly across from Ryūza, who was sporting a mostly indifferent, but otherwise arrogant expression.
Ryūza: I couldn’t have asked for an easier path to the semi-finals. I just gotta take care of you and waste a little chakra on that Hyūga boy and then the long-haired girl’s as good as mine. …Say your farewells now, kid, cause you won’t get another chance.
Taigen paid his remark no mind – much to Ryūza’s surprise – and proceeded to get on all fours, intent on getting a running start when the match began.
Taigen: I won’t need one. …You’re not even gonna lay a finger on me.
Baiko: Alright, if both of you are ready, …begin.
Taigen immediately took off, but in no less brief a time span did Ryūza already drop to his knees and clasp his hands together, the emergence of black rings around his eyes prompting Taigen to decrease his pace and scan the ground around him. Unfortunately, this did nothing to prevent his next stride from ending directly above a newly formed sinkhole.
Ryūza: (Hnh, gotcha.)
To his surprise, however, Taigen’s foot had barely grazed the surface of the sand before pushing it off of it and continuing his advance.
Ryūza: (What!?)
His guard lowered for that fraction of a second, Ryūza just barely had enough time to conjure a thin wall of sand, just thick enough to stop Taigen’s kick from making full impact before the latter retreated a ways. Having received a small bruise from what little force from Taigen’s attack broke through, Ryūza stood there holding his cheek, clear frustration emanating from his face.
Ryūza: (This is ridiculous. He fell right in, I saw it. …This kid’s pretty light on his toes. I suppose I’ll just have to level the playing field, then.)
He clasped his hands together again once more, prompting Taigen to step back in preparation for whatever came first. To the surprise of most, nothing happened, but to those with special eyes like Manako, this was entirely untrue. Sensing this, as well, Airon quickly inquired about this from him.
Airon: (More sinkholes?)
Manako: (He merely nodded in response.) (And a lot of them. …Your boy might be in over his head this round, Airon.)
Airon: (Barely fazed by this, he smirked and turned his attention back towards the match.) (Just watch.)
Down below, Taigen charged forward for a second attempt. He quickly fell into yet another sinkhole, only to leap out immediately as he did before.
Ryūza: (Again!?)
His aggravation building after two more successful getaways, he began focusing more of his chakra, causing a long arm of sand to lash out from the next sinkhole Taigen found himself too close to. This quickly became Ryūza’s primary method of attack, but no matter how he maneuvered the arms as they shot forth from their holes, Taigen always found a way to squeeze in between them.
Sabure: How the heck is he doing that!? It’s like he knows when it’s fixing to lash out at him!
Airon: (He chuckled at this before proceeding to give her an explanation.) Hehehe, there are some of us here who can read minds, Sabure, but I assure you he’s not one of them. …Taigen is pretty small for his age, wouldn’t you say?
Sabure: (She stared down at Taigen for a moment in an attempt to estimate how tall he was.) Well…yeah. About four feet and three inches, I guess.
Airon: Four and two actually, just roughly an inch shorter than Nakama. He’s essentially the runt of the litter between all of us, but that also gives him an advantage all but the best of us lack. Speed, light-footedness, even his perception of his surroundings, all of it is enhanced by his small stature and the heavy training he’s been put through only augments his abilities further. …Now he’s a true master of the evasive arts. Even the best trap setters in the world will have a hard time tripping him up.
He smirked and glanced over at Sabure before continuing.
Airon: I won’t lie. I was hoping he’d wind up facing your brother, just to see how good he really is.
Irritated by his apparent superiority complex, Sabure shifted her gaze back to the fight below, as did Airon, his thoughts now focused on reaching Taigen’s.
Airon: (No need to drag this out any longer, Taigen. …End it now.)
Taigen: (…Got it.)
Getting back on all fours, his chakra slowly began to build to the point of being visible, much to the surprise of his opponent. He took off at breakneck speed shortly afterwards, once again treading over any sinkholes and avoiding any arms of sand that came his way.
Ryūza: (Rrrgh!! He’s still avoiding all my attacks!)
Sabure: Come on, Ryūza!! Get him!
His normal attacks still proving ineffective, Ryūza finally resorted to conjuring a large wall of sand to halt Taigen’s advance, prompting him to retreat back as it collapsed over top of him.
Ryūza: That’s it!! I’m done playing around!
Pressing his hands back together, he called upon more of his chakra than before, gathering sand around him until it formed a large sphere, its walls roughly half a foot thick. Shortly afterwards, a small eye appeared and began hovering over the dome, courtesy of the Third Eye passed down from his grandfather, who watched the match with increasing nervousness.
Gaara: He’s retreated back into his dome. …He must be taking this fight very seriously.
Konohamaru: I wonder how Taigen plans to get to him now.
Darui: Sorry, Lord Hokage, but I’d say his chances now are pretty dull at best.
Naruto: (Agreeing with Darui to an extent, he gripped the railing he was leaning on as he thought about his grandson, along with what Sasuke informed of earlier.) (Come on, Airon. When’re you gonna help this kid out?)
A short distance below, Airon was indeed thinking about Taigen’s chances now that Ryūza had solidified his defenses. Manako recognized this, as well, and proceeded to question his rival on his intentions going forward in the match.
Manako: (You think he can break through that without hurting himself?)
Airon: (…Not by himself.)
He made no movements with his body, but both Manako and Inase could see that his chakra was slowly beginning to ripple throughout his body, prompting the small portion he placed within Taigen to do the same. The latter noticed this, as well, and proceeded to look up at Airon, who was glaring down at him with a look of determination that he matched soon after.
Airon: (Go! Now!!)
Taigen: (Right!!)
He began what would hopefully be his final charge, his speed having topped any records he set previously during the match. Once again, Ryūza’s secondary defenses proved no match for his evasive abilities, but the Sand genin showed little concern with this from within his dome.
Ryūza: (He’s still dodging my attacks…well, it doesn’t matter. As soon as he reaches the dome, he’s done for.)
Sure enough, when Taigen finally came within close proximity, the walls of the dome began to stretch and morph in much the same way Ryūza’s sinkholes did before it, an obvious ploy to take him down before he could attempt to break through.
Ryūza: Gotcha!
Airon: (NOW!!)
Taigen answered without delay, bringing his leg up as he came within kicking distance of the dome’s outer walls. Before its sandy extensions could attack him, though, an enormous surge of chakra burst forth from his leg, disbanding whatever sand found itself within its reach, including a large section of the dome.
Ryūza: WHAT!!?
Fully exposed and almost too overcome with shock to respond, Ryūza could do nothing to stop Taigen from entering the dome, bringing the match to an abrupt end with two swift kicks to the chest and cheek. Ryūza lost consciousness before he hit the ground, followed closely by what was left of the dome. No less shocked by this outcome than those up in the stands, Baiko threw up his arm to confirm it.
Baiko: The winner is…Taigen!
The audience immediately fell into a long period of thunderous applause, which Taigen accepted graciously in between drawn-out breaths. Hardly everyone in the audience was pleased, though, the most obvious exception being Ryūza’s sister, who had immediately turned to Airon as the most probable culprit.
Sabure: NO WAY!! That’s impossible! …You! What do you do to help him!?
Airon: (He merely rolled his eyes and looked back down at the arena, though he couldn’t help but smile from ear to ear.) I’m standing up here on the balcony, Sabure. Surely you’re just making wild assumptions.
On the highest balcony, the Kage and their bodyguards were also deciphering the match’s surprising ending, though Gaara and Kankurō were too awestruck to join in.
Kurotsuchi: That was a very concentrated burst of chakra.
Suigetsu: You’re not kidding. Wouldn’t have thought that kid could do something like that.
Chōjūrō: It was even powerful enough to completely dispel your grandson’s defense, Lord Kazekage.
His intrusion caught Gaara by surprise, who feebly nodded in agreement before turning back to watch Ryūza being carried away by two medical-nin. A short distance in front of them, Sasuke and Naruto listened in, already aware of what really happened.
Sasuke: You’re not gonna tell them?
Naruto: (He grinned in response, evidently proud of his strong bloodline.) Now why do that when I can just stand here and bask in my grandson’s greatness?
Sakura: (She shook her head in nostalgic amusement.) Forty years and you’re still full of yourself, Naruto?
The three shared a laugh at this, meanwhile Taigen returned to the finalists’ balcony, by means of a shortcut conjured up by Nakama. Immediately, he was greeted by Minto, who seemed to have more worry on his face than joy.
Minto: You alright, bud? You’re not too low on energy, are you?
Airon: (He walked up behind him and placed his hand on his shoulder in reassurance, removing it a second later on placing it on Taigen’s.) I think we’d know if he was, Minto. …How’re you holding up, Taigen?
Taigen: (Still exhausted, he looked up at him with the faintest semblance of a smirk.) Huhh…huhh…I’ve never felt this exhausted…huhh…or this pumped up.
Airon: (He smiled in relief before turning to Minto.) Alright. Take him into the corridors so he can rest. I’ll meet you inside once the next match is over.
Minto quickly did as instructed and the two disappeared into the hallways within the walls of the stadium, followed shortly by their third teammate Nakama. With that, Airon leaned back against the railing, slipping some more subtle instructions to his rival.
Airon: (Let me know if someone goes near them, alright?)
Manako: (I’ll be sure to keep an eye out.)
Airon nodded in understanding before looking back-and-forth between the next two combatants, prompting Manako to smirk in light of his predicament.
Manako: (Do you have a preferred victor?)
Airon: (…I’d be a terrible brother if I did.)
Baiko: I need Kei Namikaze and Inase Namikaze to make their way to the arena!
Taigen comes out unscathed against Ryūza!!!
