This one should be interesting, a nice little exchange to start off this handful of intermission chapters. I’m actually pretty proud of this one and I think it turned out really well-written*_* lol Anyways, enjoy
Here’s my previous chapters, for those who missed any:
Chapter 045: First Contact
Later that evening, in a small area near the Hokage mansion, the Namikaze household was once again brimming with excitement as its resident triplets settled back in after a two-day absence. As their mother prepared dinner in the kitchen a short distance away, their father sat in the family room with Inase under his arm, while Kei stood up in front of them explaining in vivid detail how they came to be chosen for the finals.
Kei: Aw, guys, you should’ve been there! I did that thing where I turned my clones into kunai and threw them! Aw man, that caught him completely off guard when they changed back! Then I used my chakra chains and that shocked everyone even more! I beat him in like five seconds, I think it was!
Jiraiya: (He was sipping freshly brewed tea as he listened, trying his best to sound impressed.) Really? That’s not bad, Kei.
Kei: Heh, you bet it ain’t! Oh, and then Inase went up! We all went right after each other, imagine that! She did her little mind trick thing and got him to pansy out before the match even started. I mean, talk about taking the cheap way out.
Inoue: (Hearing this from the kitchen, she giggled softly as she proceeded to cut up a few onion stalks.) Hmhmhm, I’m sure you’d have done the same thing if you had that sort of talent, Kei.
Kei: Yeah, whatever. Oh, but Airon’s match was even more awesome! He got himself caught in the guy’s genjutsu, probably on purpose, right? And while the guy wasn’t looking, he left his sword up there with us, and he did that thing where it moves on its own and it got the guy right in the shoulder! He didn’t even see it him coming, he got him so good! Right, Airon?
The only one there who wasn’t listening to Kei, the eldest triplet was sitting on the shorter of the room’s two sofas, gazing out the window as he rested his cheek against his hand. Kei’s question provoked him to look away for a moment, but Jiraiya could tell that his thoughts still weren’t fully with them.
Jiraiya: You know you don’t have to stick around, Airon. We just wanted to see how you three did, that’s all. …Go on.
He looked at his father for a moment, wondering if he and his mother would be hurt that he had other things he’d rather do than to spend time with them. The gentle smiles on both of their faces quickly convinced him otherwise, though, and he returned the gesture before heading out the front door while his siblings looked on in wonder.
Kei: Where the heck’s he running off to now?
Inase: Hmhmhm, well, it’s not the middle of the night, so it definitely isn’t for a walk. …So, I guess that leaves only one other possibility…
Several kilometers away, a large river once flowed through the village before its untimely decimation by the Akatsuki leader decades earlier, most of the village’s infrastructure disappearing along with it. As the shinobi had since rebuilt the town, though, nature had done the same with that river, which now flowed stronger than ever, and it was here that a lone Nakama sat on the grassy knoll that overlooked it. She stared out at the calm waters for the longest time, the sunset producing a glimmer on its surface which matched that of her bright-green eyes, and the look on her face gave one the impression that the sight placed her under some form of hypnosis. To those who looked closer, though, a feeling of solitude was not far beneath the surface, a solitude which made the sound of someone calling out to her a harborer of immense joy.
????: Well, don’t you look lonely?
Half-expecting his eventual appearance, she looked up with a smile to find Airon coming towards her, his hands tucked in the pockets of his black overcoat as he walked. Once he was a few feet away, he sat down on the knoll beside her, flattening out his legs and raising his left knee as his hands kept his back elevated off the ground. Once he had finishing positioning himself, he tilted his head to face Nakama, finding to his amusement that she had pulled her legs in closer and wrapped her arms around them.
Airon: You didn’t want to go home yet?
Nakama: (She smiled and shook her head.) I just thought you’d come looking for me eventually, so I figured waiting here would make it easy for you to find me.
Airon: (He looked out at the river after hearing her answer, reminiscing for a moment before responding.) Hmhmhm, that’s true. …You always did enjoy this spot.
Nakama opened her mouth to speak, holding herself back at the last moment. Catching sight of this, Airon turned towards her and patiently awaited her answer, several seconds passing by before she made her second attempt.
Nakama: Thanks for the money, by the way. …I really needed it.
Airon: (He smiled up at her before looking away, knowing that there was more to it than that.) I know. …Anything else on your mind?
Nakama: (Her expression as she spoke was more playful than before.) You can’t look for yourself?
Airon: …I promised you a long time ago I would never do that to you, Nakama.
Settling on this answer, Nakama looked back down at the river, as did Airon, finally sharing what she’d been thinking about after roughly a minute of silence.
Nakama: Do you remember when your grandfather first brought me to live here?
Airon: (The very thought of it prompted him to chuckle softly.) Hehehehe…kinda hard to forget.
After several days of traveling through various terrains, Naruto finally returned to the Leaf village, dressed in his typical red robes, which were being tugged on by a small girl with long black hair and a brown shirt several sizes too large for her. After greeting the gatekeepers and explaining her presence to them, he proceeded to walk around the village and show her the sights rather than immediately return home. They’d been walking for nearly an hour, nothing in particular catching the young girl’s eye, until the village’s river finally came into their view, prompting her to stop and take a moment to stare at it, captivated by its surface glistened in the sunshine. Naruto also stopped and looked upon noticing that she had, standing there in confusion until coming to the realization that, while the Rain village was no stranger to rivers such as this, the girl had never once seen its waters shine quite like this. He pondered this for a moment before looking down at her again with a smile.
Naruto: Like the view, Nakama?
She quickly snapped out of her trance upon hearing his voice, staring up at him briefly before gazing back out at the water.
Nakama: It’s so…pretty.
Naruto: (Her childlike wonder and adorableness as she said this prompted his smile to morph into his trademark grin.) Hehe, well, just you wait. You haven’t even seen the entire village yet-
????: Grandpa!
Their alone time was abruptly ended as a small boy with spiky red hair and a gray shirt ran up to Naruto and wrapped his arms around his leg, pushing Nakama back a short ways as Naruto jumped back, trying desperately to shake the boy off as both of them laughed uncontrollably. He was joined momentarily by two more children of similar age, one a boy with shaggy black hair and a matching shirt and the other a girl with long blue hair and a purple shirt, who aided their brother in attempting to bring their grandfather to the ground. Not too far past his prime, though, Naruto quickly countered their plan and hoisted all three of them into his arms, continuing to laugh as they moaned in disappointment. The hilarity finally over, he gently set them back down and they proceeded to line up in front of him, still grinning away at him.
Naruto: Hehahaha, Airon, Kei, Inase! I’m glad to see all three of you have been doing okay.
Kei: Yeah! …Hey, who’s she?
Looking down in confusion, Naruto quickly noticed that Nakama had latched onto his robes again and pulled them over her face, smiling before looking back at the three children in front of them.
Naruto: Her name is Nakama. She’s from the village I just came back from. A lot of bad stuff happened while she was living there, so I brought her back here to live with us until she grows up.
Not quite sure what he meant by “bad stuff”, Kei and Inase proceeded to wave at the small girl, causing her to pull Naruto’s robes even further over her face. Airon, other on the hand, being far more mature than his siblings by this point, understood full well what their grandfather meant and momentarily reminisced on it, eventually putting on a gentle smile and walking towards her with his hand outstretched.
Airon: Pleased to meet you, Nakama. My name’s Air-
His good intentions quickly ceased as a small pillar of earth rose up beneath him, catching him in the chest and throwing him back a short distance. Cringing through the pain, he hoisted himself up and looked to find her angry eyes peeping out over Naruto’s robes as her hair fluttered about. The old man hastily pressed his hand against her shoulder, trying to ensure her everything was alright, while Kei and Inase helped their brother to his feet.
Inase: Airon! …Hey, what’d you do that for!? He was just trying to introduce himself-
Her yelling stopped when she felt Airon’s hand against hers, removing it from his arm before doing the same with Kei’s. He then proceeded to glare at Nakama with a conniving grin stretched across his face, standing there in silence for a moment before forming the Seal of Confrontation with his left hand.
Airon: No…no, it’s fine, sis. …Hehehehehe, this might actually be a lot of fun.
Naruto: Airon, I mean it! Don’t-
He didn’t even have time to complete his sentence before Airon pulled a kunai out of his backpack and darted forward, prompting Naruto to run past him and grab Kei and Inase as several more pillars began shooting up from the ground. Now aware of what she was capable of, though, Airon easily dodged any which came his way, grinning all the while he advanced closer and closer. Nakama’s aggravation rapidly becoming more visible and her hair’s movements more violent, she increased the number of pillars and the speed at which they appeared, only provoked Airon into increasing the speed of his own movements until finally, he lunged forward and tackled her to the ground. Both of them breathing heavily from exhaustion, Airon placed the kunai up to her neck as she laid there beneath him, thinking for a moment he had won until suddenly realizing that another pillar with a pointed tip had risen up beside them, aimed directly at his ribs. Recognizing this to be a draw, Airon chuckled and stood back up, much to Nakama’s confusion and Naruto’s relief as he set Kei and Inase back down a short ways away.
Airon: Hehe, guess this one was a tie. Don’t worry, I’ll get you next time, though.
As Nakama sat up, Airon returned the kunai to his bag and held out his left hand again, though this time, his fingers were inverted and slightly bent. He stood there waiting for her to return the gesture, realizing her inexperience in sparring after a moment.
Airon: Oh! It’s called the Seal of Reconciliation. You’re supposed to make it with your opponent after you finish fighting, that way it lets everyone know that both of you are still friends.
His words brought a smile to Naruto’s face, but for Nakama, there simply wasn’t a plausible reaction. No more than a few seconds ago, she believed him to be trying to kill her, but now he was telling her that he not only bore no ill will towards her for the violent impulse which started their brief duel, but he even wanted to become friends with her regardless. This, of course, was a new idea to her, not only the notion of forgiveness but friendship, as well, and she was left with no idea of how to answer his appeal.
Airon: A smile always works.
As if he had read her mind, his previously sinister expression returned to the gentle smile he had tried using just before she attacked him, a gesture which surprised even more. She sat there a moment longer, now seemingly on the verge of tears until finally, she gave him the smile he had been waiting for and completed his seal, which gradually morphed into two clasping hands.
As thoughts of their meeting passed through her mind a little while longer, Nakama suddenly found herself shedding real tears, which she was quick to wipe away, though not quick enough to prevent Airon from noticing.
Airon: You okay?
Nakama: (Sniffling as she tried to prevent more tears from coming out, she nodded feebly in response.) Yeah…yeah, I’ll be fine.
Having been thinking the same thing until now, Airon’s fingers began curling slightly, as though he was prepping to take Nakama’s hand into his own, only to flatten them back out a second later. The sun now nearly gone, he stood up to leave, helping Nakama up before they began walking home. After roughly fifteen minutes, they reached a point where their paths branched off in separate directions, prompting Airon to bid her goodnight before walking away.
Airon: You’re coming over to our house Wednesday, right?
Nakama: Huh?
Airon: Your party? …It’s your thirteenth birthday, isn’t it?
Nakama: (She blushed in embarrassment, having completely forgotten about it until now.) Oh, …y-yeah. I guess I’ll see you then.
Airon: (Chuckling softly at this, he nodded and waved to her, still walking backwards down his own street.) Let’s make it a good one.
She returned his smile and nodded back before she began hurrying down the adjacent street, ready to return home so she could go to bed and let the events of the previous day seep into her mind.
Airon and Nakama reminisce on their history together, which started at the age of five!!!
