Alright, time to redeem Hitomi for that loss to Manako a while back*_* lol Hope you enjoy
Here’s my previous chapters, for those who missed any:
Chapter 034: Already on the Brink
B: Alright! Now that’s all over, let’s get things movin’ again!
As always, the large black screen was quickly illuminated by two rows of yellow letters, which began flashing rapidly as everyone in the spacious room looked on. After ten seconds, they stopped on two more random names.
B: The next match-up is Hitomi Hyūga and Amiko Kazuki!
The latter quickly bid farewell to Asuka before descending the stairs, slightly disheartened when he failed to respond to her. Hitomi, on the other hand, still feelings the effects of his brief duel with Manako the previous day, was much slower to head towards the arena floor, something his worried teammates noticed as he started walking away.
Chan: Are you alright, Hitomi?
Hitomi: (Preferring they didn’t worry, he did his best to recompose himself before turning around.) Don’t worry about it. …I’ll be just fine.
Lee: No! Unacceptable! A shinobi should never enter combat at less than their full strength!
Miyuki: Sensei, he can’t just hold out until he’s better! If he does that, he’ll forfeit his chance to enter the third round of the Exam!
They might have let this argument carry on longer, had they not suddenly realized that Hitomi had already left the balcony. Walking slowly towards his position with his sight set on his opponent, he tried desperately not to make his fatigue apparent, only to realize he failed when he saw Amiko’s confident smirk.
Amiko: (It looks like he’s already in bad shape. …Hmhm, perfect.)
On the opposite balcony, Manako watched Hitomi closely as Airon watched him, well aware of the guilt his rival must’ve been feeling right now.
Airon: (Relax, Manako. …He’s still a Hyūga. He won’t go down that easily.)
Manako: (Minding Airon’s reassuring word, he still proceeded to scan Hitomi with his Sharingan.) (I hope you’re right, Airon. …Him losing because of me is the last thing I need on my conscience right now.)
Smirking at how easy it was to make him feel guilty, Airon looked back down at Hitomi and Amiko, the latter of whom was still taking the time to enjoy her own luck.
Amiko: You look a little tired. You know, you can always quit and try again when you’re in better health. They do hold two exams a year.
Hitomi: (Not about to pass on the chance to fight his peers, he took a deep breath and straightened his posture before glaring at her with his Byakugan.) Then why don’t you follow your own advice? …It’ll make things go by much faster.
Her smirk disappearing, Amiko shifted her arms and legs into a simple fighting stance while Hitomi took a step back and held one arm out in front of him, a standard pose for users of the Gentle Fist. Seeing that both of them were now ready to fight, B quickly held his arm up to start the match.
B: Alright, …if both y’all are ready, …begin!
Already anticipating her first move, Hitomi quickly retrieved a single kunai from the pouch around his waist, just in time to raise it up and deflect three incoming shuriken, as well as the three that followed them. No sooner after he deflected those, however, was he forced to guard his right side as Amiko’s leg came crashing against it, sending him sliding a short distance across the floor. As he recomposed himself and drew another kunai, she came at him with two of her own, not intending to let him rest for even a second.
Amiko: Clones and smoke bombs would be pointless against someone with your eyes, so I’ll just keep coming at you from straight ahead! Your stamina’s already low as it is, so all need to do is keep making you use up all your energy and you’re done for!
Hitomi: () (Rrr, this isn’t good. My body is still sore from the previous day. If I can’t think up a winning strategy soon…)
Setting some of his attention aside to think as he deflected her attacks, albeit at the cost of a few cuts and bruises, it wasn’t long before he found the strategy he was looking for, something Airon noticed from the balcony and proceeded to chuckle at.
Nakama: (What is it? Did he think of something?)
Airon: (He nodded to affirm her suspicions, not taking his eyes off Hitomi as he did.) (Just keep watching. …This should be fun.)
Down below, Hitomi continued his dance with Amiko for several more minutes, trying at every opening to put some distance between them, but to no avail. He was eventually forced to pull out a paper bomb just so he could push her back a few feet, afterwhich he put his plan into motion and dropped a handful of smoke bombs, covering a quarter of the arena in a light-purple fog. Knowing better, though, Amiko quickly retreated back and out of the smokescreen, keeping several shuriken at the ready for when Hitomi leapt forth from the cloud.
Amiko: Hnh, if you think I’m gonna fall victim to a lame sneak attack like that, you have another thing coming.
Hitomi: (Hearing this from within the cloud, he smirked in amusement as chakra began pouring out of him from every direction.) Whoever said I was using it to sneak up on you?
His remark provoking Amiko into strengthening her guard, he came bursting out of the smoke cloud at blinding speed, causing her eyes to widen and prompting her to throw her shuriken in panic. Regardless of her rashness, they remained on their intended path, only for Hitomi to increase his speed even further and dash out of their way, showing up behind Amiko hardly a second later and plowing into her back with his right leg. Her lowered guard increasing the damage significantly, she fell to the ground in pain and on the verge of passing out, while Hitomi stood above her breathing heavily.
Hitomi: Clones and smoke bombs would be pointless, so I’ll just come at you from straight ahead.
Taken aback by this sudden turn of events, as well, those in the audience looked on in surprise, while a select few questioned exactly what happened.
Nakama: Was that the…Inner Gates?
Airon smiled and nodded to confirm it before looking up at his grandfather, who was smirking out of nostalgia as he looked towards his old comrade on the opposite balcony.
Naruto: (Guess you really don’t choose favorites, …huh, Lee?)
Lee: (Gazing over at Naruto and returning his smile, he redirected his attention back to the outcome of the match.) It would seem that my special training really paid off. There is no mistaking it. Hitomi just used the Primary Lotus, not only making up for his current state, but increasing his speed even further as a result.
Chan: (Though he nodded in agreement, he still noted the one mistake his grandfather made and proceeded to correct him.) Actually, sensei, …that was not the first Inner Gate, but the second.
Having not noticed this before, Lee was naturally surprised by the news, which Miyuki explained in more detail.
Miyuki: Our scuffle with Manako and his cousins yesterday left all three of us pretty drained, but Hitomi got the worst of it, having had his chakra completely blocked off. Once he was finally able to move, he wound up opening the first gate just to get his chakra flowing properly again. …That’s the reason he’s still so exhausted even now.
Lee: (Listening intensively until she finished, he looked down at Hitomi with an expression that seemed to combine admiration and determination.) I see. …Well, I will be sure to give him a day off to regain his strength once these preliminaries are all over. Then we will return to nonstop training until the finals!
Chan: (Though slightly less ashamed than Miyuki, he still looked up at Lee in minor embarrassment.) (Come on, Grandfather. Really?)
With Amiko having been laying flat on the ground for nearly two minutes now, B wasted no more time waiting and quickly confirmed the results.
B: And the winner is…Hitomi Hyūga!
No sooner after he called his name did Hitomi plummet to the ground beside his opponent, just barely holding on to his consciousness. Two pairs of medical-nin quickly came out to set them on stretchers, while Lee and Chan leapt down from the balcony to congratulate him, Miyuki choosing to take the stairs instead.
Lee: You have a good rest, Hitomi. You have truly earned it.
Hitomi: (Lifting his head slightly, he smiled up at Lee as they lifted him off the ground.) Ngh…thanks, sensei.
As the medical-nin carried him past his sensei, he motioned for them to stop again shortly after, so he could whisper something to his teammates.
Hitomi: Should I not expect any special treatment after this?
Chan: Oh, definitely.
He let his head fall in aggravation and exhaustion, causing them both to chuckle softly.
Miyuki: Guess you might as well enjoy the break now, then, huh?
He managed a smile before the medical-nin began walking again, exiting the arena as his teammates returned to the balcony. Amiko was carried out shortly after him as Asuka looked down at her from above, obviously disgusted with his teammates.
Asuka: (How pathetic. They disgrace their village, both of them. …Seems the Rock village really has gotten weak since the Fourth War.)
As he let this thought drift through his mind, everyone else quickly got settled in once again as B resumed his duties.
B: Alright, let’s get this next match underway!
Hitomi inherits both his grandfather’s brilliance and his sensei’s determination – who will be the next genin to move on in the competition!!?
The End
