Been waiting a while to get to this one*_* I’d say these two are due for some much needed insight, so hopefully, I gave plenty of it in this chapter. Anyways, enjoy
Here’s my previous chapters, for those who missed any:
Chapter 032: Raiden’s Rage
Down on the arena floor, the two siblings approached each other from their respective balconies as those still there looked on, each of them carefully sizing up both their abilities and their relationship with one another.
Gaara: Something tells me that these two boys don’t have the strongest of bonds, Suzaku.
Suzaku: (Leaning over the railing from several feet away, he looked up at Gaara with a melancholic expression before returning his gaze to his two sons.) …Well, you’re not wrong, Lord Kazekage.
Taking their positions across from each other, the two proceeded to stare at each other for the longest time as B continually shifted his gaze from one to the other. Eventually, Raiden broke the silence with a smirk.
Raiden: Heh, I couldn’t have been given an easier opponent.
Minto said nothing in response, but rather held out his hands in a simple taijutsu stance, positioning his feet so he might get a good running start when the match began. Finding amusement in this, as well, his younger brother proceeded to match his formation.
Raiden: Aw, giving me the silent treatment, are we? …Or are you just not a good fighter verbally, either?
Minto: (Already on the verge of breaching his boiling point, he did his best to maintain his composure as he replied.) You’ll be the one keeping silent when this is over, …little brother.
Hearing the disrespect in his voice, Raiden’s smirk quickly vanished as his fist tightened in anger, while the other stayed perched beside his weapons pouch so he might acquire a kunai as soon as B gave the signal. Seeing that both of them were indeed ready to fight, the seasoned swordsman raised his hand to give them the signal.
B: Alright, …if both of y’all are ready, …begin!
Immediately, Minto took off towards Raiden, who quickly pulled out two kunai and flung them towards his sibling. Revealing two small shuriken and tossing them at his brother’s own projectiles, Minto ran past them as they fell to the floor, having cancelled each other out, before leaping into the air and extending his leg. Forming a cross with his arms, Raiden braced himself as Minto’s chakra-infused kick made contact, pushing him back a short ways as he returned to the ground and dashed forward once again, kunai in hand. Pulling out another, Raiden just barely held his weapon out in front of him in time to block Minto’s own, both of them continuing this dance for a full minute as their peers and elders looked on.
Yatsuri: They’re pretty fast.
Airon: (He nodded in agreement from a short distance away.) Well, both of them are exceptionally skilled for shinobi their age, …in their own ways.
Sabure: (That last bit throwing her off, she looked over at him in confusion.) In their own ways?
Suzaku: It’ll make itself known before this fight is over.
Slightly startled by his intrusion, all six genin of the nearby genin – along with Naruto and Gaara – shifted their gaze towards the father of the two combatants, staring intensively at the fight below. He was wearing an expression that combined worry with longing, the latter being rather strange…considering it seemed to be the longing for someone specific to emerge victorious.
Nakama: Are you alright, Sensei?
Suzaku: (A bit startled the intrusion, his head twitched slightly before looking at her.) Oh, …I’m fine, Nakama. Just anxious about the match, I guess.
Manako: (Not fooled by his reassuring statement, he turned to his rival for confirmation of this.) (He’s not fine at all, is he?)
Airon: (Having been staring at Suzaku for the past few seconds, he turned back to Manako.) (Not a chance. …He’s choosing sides.)
Nakama: (Surprised by this, she looked up at her sensei with a mixture of confusion and concern in her expression.) (But why? …Why would he choose between his sons like that?)
Airon: (Thinking it over for a moment, he shifted his gaze back towards the ongoing match.) (…For the same reason you and I are, most likely.)
Down below, the hand-to-hand combat between Minto and Raiden continued to increase in ferocity, with the former’s taijutsu proving far better than that of his brother. Unable to do anything other than retreat back and hold up his arms as Minto delivered punch after punch and kick after kick, Raiden was eventually forced to grab his chest in pain after being knocked across the arena, a product of his older sibling’s chakra-infused kick. Quickly returning to his feet before Minto could respond to the brief opening, he cast a few hand signs as he bit his lip in anger.
Raiden: Water Style: Raging Waves!
Huge torrents quickly ruptured from Raiden’s enlarged cheeks, which Minto swerved to dodge as he closed in on him. Wary of his position, Raiden immediately began weaving more hand signs.
Raiden: Fire Style: Fire-
Minto: Not a chance!
Having misjudged the distance between them, Raiden could only shut his eyes and grit his teeth as his brother’s left foot collided with his right cheek, sending him flying against the wall of his arena as blood gushed from his mouth. Getting up slowly as Minto and their spectators looked on, his breathing slowly deepened as rage began to consume him. Lifting his head up to meet his brother’s gaze, everyone watching was quickly taken aback the burning hatred in his eyes, Suzaku more than anyone.
Suzaku: (…Raiden…)
Raiden: Huhh…huhh…no…huhh…never…I REFUSE TO LOSE TO A SHINOBI WHO CAN’T EVEN USE JUTSU!!!
Clasping his hands together, his entire being almost immediately became shrouded with chakra to the point where those standing on the balcony above him were forced to step back, the light radiating from the bright blue energy being too much for their eyes. Before Minto could even respond to this, Raiden weaved three more hands seals and held his hand up to his lips, his fingers bent to form the Seal of Confrontation.
Raiden: Wind Style: Dust Storm jutsu!
Instantly, an enormous cloud of soot-colored dust erupted from his lips, moving so fast that Minto could only hold his arms over his face to keep it from damaging his eyes. Each particle of dust that made contact with his flesh cut through it like a dagger, sending him crashing to the ground shortly after the cloud dispersed. He managed to survive the attack thanks to Raiden’s inexperience with the powerful technique, but to those watching from above, he looked as if he was already expired.
Suzaku, Nakama, and Taigen: MINTO!!!
Minto’s teammates instantly grabbed at the railing with the intent of jumping down to help him, but Airon quickly halted their progress, holding his arm out in front of Nakama and shooting a reassuring glance over to Taigen.
Airon: (Relax, guys. …This isn’t over yet.)
After a few seconds of standing in that exact position, Airon’s face quickly turned red before looking beside him, finding that he had placed his arm directly against Nakama’s relatively small chest. Looking up at her face to find that she was also blushing, he pulled his arm away and shifted his gaze back to the match while Manako, who was the only witness to this embarrassing incident, smirked in amusement. These brief disruptions quickly ceased, though, as Minto finally returned to his feet, his entire body covered in deep scratches and his energy almost completely exhausted. A tad annoyed by his persistence, Raiden was nonetheless pleased with this turnabout and proceeded to give a wicked grin, while their father continued to watch them with the same mixture of worry and longing that he had before.
Suzaku: (C’mon. …You can do this, Minto.)
Raiden: (Unable to control himself any longer, he looked up at Airon as he proceeded to cackle loudly.) Hahahahahahaha!! How do you like that, Airon!? Your best buddy is all beat up and helpless against me, but this time, you can’t do a thing about it!
Knowing he was right, Airon could only clench his fist in anger before looking down at Minto, who returned his gaze. His breaths had been reduced to drawn-out gasps for air, his steady supply of remaining chakra being the only thing allowing him to keep standing. Locking eyes in silence as Raiden continued his obnoxious cackling, they exchanged nods of understanding before Minto turned back to his brother. His laughter finally over, Raiden’s grin vanished as he pulled out four kunai – two in each hand – and dashed forward, intent on finishing this match as quickly and as painfully as possible.
Raiden’s fury overwhelms Minto!!!
