This one focuses on the current generation of Ino-Shika-Chō, for those of you who love Shikamaru and Chōji (who among us loves Ino, let’s be honest. XD I kid.) The big concern for this chapter was trying to differ their personalities from those of the original team, so please, all of you who read, let me know just how well I managed to do that. Enjoy
Here’s my previous chapters, for those who missed any:
Chapter 018: Teamwork Prevails
On the opposite side of the Forty-Fourth Training Ground, Team Kogane was also making a dash for the central tower, each of its members keeping a sharp eye out for anyone from whom they might conjure up a second scroll. …Or rather, this was the case for Inoka and Chōzen. Shikaru was looking for a more specific group of teams, that being ones weak enough for him to simply stand by as his teammates collected the scroll for him. Given the large number of teams that were competing, he had his hopes, though that same reason served to fuel his doubts, as well. It wasn’t long after he dropped the idea completely that he and Inoka were forced to return to the forest floor in pursuit of their teammate, who was desperately searching for some time to catch his breath…and anything edible.
Chōzen: Man, I could sure go for a bite right about now. I haven’t eaten since breakfast.
Shikaru: (Though not entirely surprised by this, it was still enough to cause him to hold his hand up against his forehead in aggravation.) Huhhh, seriously, Chōzen? That wasn’t even two hours ago.
Chōzen: (Hardly phased by this remark, despite what truth it held, he turned his head to face Shikaru, who was standing about five feet behind him.) Yeah, and? Big guys like me gotta eat, you know.
Inoka: (She shared in Shikaru’s annoyance, though obviously to a much greater extent.) Not ten times a day, they don’t! Come on, you can’t go at least three or four hours without looking for more food to gorge yourself on!? (Rrrrgghh, this is so stupid, it’s nauseating.)
Having closed her eyes in the midst of her thoughts, upon opening them again, she realized that Chōzen and Shikaru had pulled one another aside and were now whispering to one another, presumably about her, …which they were.
Chōzen: I think she’s in that mood again, man.
Shikaru: I’m pretty sure there’s a word for girls like her.
Having been listening in on their conversation, Inoka’s eyes quickly assumed a bright red glow and she began grinding her teeth. Her fists clenched in anger, Shikaru and Chōzen didn’t even have time to react before they connected, producing a large bump on the back of their heads.
Inoka: Yes, and if that’s not the word you’re thinking of right now, I’m gonna dig into your brains and start forcing you to spew out your darkest secrets!
Spinning around in a panic, the two didn’t even attempt to retaliate for fear that she might live up to her threat.
Shikaru and Chōzen: Uhhh-uhhhh, okay! (Wow…harsh.)
Before this scuffle could escalate further, the sound of rustling leaves nearby caused all three of them to begin looking around in alarm.
Chōzen: What the heck was that?
Shikaru: (One step ahead of his comrades, as usual, he was already forming a hand sign as he continued scanning the nearby trees for their unseen foe.) I dunno. …Keep your guard up.
Inoka: LOOK OUT!!
Her warning, however, was horribly mistimed, and before the three knew it, they were all being targeted by a single kunai, each one equipped with an explosive tag. Much to Inoka and Chōzen’s surprise, though, before they could react, their bodies were already leaping to safety of their own accord. Breathing a heavy sigh of relief, both looked down to verify their suspicions and, sure enough, their shadows were connected to that of their teammate.
Chōzen: Whew, …huhhh…thanks for the help, Shikaru.
Inoka: …Huhhh…yeah…huhhh…thanks.
Shikaru: (Though he appreciated their gratefulness, he still proceeded to shrug off their thanks in favor of preparing himself for the battle that was to follow.) I told you two to stay on your toes. …Alright, there’s no point hiding now! Come on out and fight us face-to-face, you cowards!
Almost as though they were obeying his commands, a team of slightly older genin, each wearing the forehead protector for the Rain village, quickly emerged from the surrounding tree line. Inspecting the young trio before them more closely, a wicked smile gradually formed across each of their faces.
????: Hehehehehe, well well, just what do we have here?
????: Looks like easy picking to me, boys.
????: Hnh, well then, it’d be quite a waste not to take advantage of this, now wouldn’t it?
Hardly phased, their retorts served only to upset Shikaru and his teammates even further. Remaining cautious in spite of their impending egotism, the oldest and largest of the three Rain genin surveyed the ground around Shikaru’s feet more closely, recognizing the jutsu he was currently employing almost immediately.
????: (That’s the Leaf’s Shadow Possession Jutsu. …Hehehehe, this could get interesting.) Hey, keep a close eye on that kid with the bags under his eyes, both of you. He’s a member of the Nara clan. If he catches you in that jutsu of his, you’re done.
????: Huh?
????: Say what?
While the genin proceeded to clue his teammates in on the inner workings of the jutsu, Shikaru, impressed by his enemy’s prior knowledge of his technique, retracted his hold on both of his teammates and took a moment to formulate a strategy to use against them.
Shikaru: (This guy certainly knows his stuff, I’ll give him that. …Doesn’t seem to know a lot about the Yamanaka and Akimichi clans, though.) …Heh, well then, it’d be quite a waste not to take advantage of this, now wouldn’t it?
Inoka: Huh?
This obvious mockery of their enemy’s previous accusations immediately caught the attention of both Inoka and Chōzen, as well as that of the three genin in question.
????: You little punk!
????: You’re gonna eat those words, kid! Just you wait!
Shikaru: (Heh, took the words right out of my mouth.) Alright, guys, let’s keep it basic! Scatter Formation!
Inoka and Chōzen: Right!
Almost immediately, Shikaru retreated to the shadow of a nearby tree, forming a hand sign once he had done so.
????: Watch out, boys!
Shikaru: Shadow Possession Jutsu!
Instantly, the shadows beneath his feet divided into three separate lines which quickly began scurrying across the ground, each targeting a different member of the opposing team. Expecting this, they wasted no time retreating outside of Shikaru’s range, …though one of the younger two genin, for some reason, had decided to stay behind.
????: Hey, what the heck are you doing!?
????: (What the heck’s going on? …Hey, wait!)
Looking over at Inoka and Chōzen, he noticed that the former had formed a hand sign of her own, one which he quickly recognized.
????: That girl’s from the Yamanaka clan! She’s using her clan’s Mind Destruction Jutsu to keep him from moving! (Of course! Dang it, I should’ve known, …which means that the chubby one there is from the Akimichi clan. He has to be.)
Proving his enemy right, Chōzen quickly formed his own hand sign.
Chōzen: Partial Expansion Jutsu!
His jutsu activated, his arms instantly began to increase in size before making an attempt to grab ahold of their two remaining foes. The older of the two was able to dodge easily, but the younger genin was knocked to the ground in a failed effort to do the same, making him easy prey for Inoka’s jutsu, and Shikaru’s jutsu after that.
Shikaru: That’s two down, guys! Chōzen, try bringing him closer!
Chōzen: Got it!
Retracting his arms and returning them to their normal size, he quickly formed a different hand sign.
Chōzen: Expansion Jutsu!
In a large puff of smoke, Chōzen’s chest instantly expanded to over ten times its original size, though he was far from finished yet, tucking his head, arms, and legs inside of his newly expanded body in preparation for his next attack.
Chōzen: Human Boulder!
His large, spherical body quickly began to pick up speed, intent on running his opponent over in one fell swoop. Naturally, the Rain genin had no trouble dodging the technique, but to his surprise, Chōzen quickly managed to turn himself around, albeit with great difficulty.
????: (Jeez, this guy’s got some skill…and if I try to counterattack, his teammates will just catch me in their jutsu. …Come on, what do I do? What do I do!?)
Seeing no way out, he closed his eyes in frustration, cursing under his breath as Inoka’s jutsu connected and his body leapt to safety of its own accord, finding itself caught in Shikaru’s jutsu upon returning to ground level. The scuffle now over, Chōzen’s body stopped rolling and returned to its normal size, throwing his fist into the air once he had returned to his feet.
Chōzen: Heh hehhh!! THAT’S what I’m talking about!
Shikaru: (Facing some difficulty controlling three people at once, he eventually adjusted to the strain on his chakra levels and found himself capable of standing.) Heh, bit of a sloppy performance, if you ask me, …but I guess we still pulled it off.
Inoka: Hnh, now we just need to figure out which of these punks is carrying the scroll.
Shikaru: Hmm…well, only one way to find out.
Reaching into the pouch tied around his waist, he pulled out an earth scroll, causing the three genin under his control to repeat his actions. As expected, these actions produced one other scroll, which, much to their contentment, turned out to be a heaven scroll.
Chōzen: Alright! Round three, here we come!
Shikaru: Inoka?
Inoka: Got it.
Walking over to seize the scroll, she quickly returned with a scowl stretched across her face, …the obvious product of an obscene message the genin passed on as she took the scroll from his hand. Nonetheless, though, she remained silent, even after Chōzen implored to know what he had told her.
Shikaru: Now that that’s done with, we wouldn’t want you three getting any funny ideas after we take off, so…I’m gonna have to lay you down for a nap.
Fearing the worst, the trio’s eyes instantly doubled in size, an action which repeated itself once they noticed the hand-shaped shadows edging closer and closer to their throats.
Shikaru: Ninja Art: Shadow Strangle Jutsu!
Their screams lasted only a few minutes, and the genin fell to the ground unconscious once Shikaru finally released them from his jutsu. A second scroll and a burst of confidence under their belts, Team Kogane wasted no further time in this area of the forest and continued on their path towards the tower.
The bond between their clans remains strong!!!
