Alright, this one’s definitely insanely short compared to my other chapters, but I want the next part to have a chapter of its own. This one focuses just on Airon’s current actions, but I do start paying more attention to some of the other Leaf genin in the next few chapters, so they don’t seem too neglected. Also, a quick spoiler: I try not to give names to anyone who isn’t sticking around very long, but I kinda had no choice this time, so just to clear the air, the other genin in this chapter isn’t a recurring character. It shouldn’t be that hard to point out who I’m talking aboutxd Enjoy

Chapter 014: First Blood
Tree after tree passed by in the blink of an eye, as did the nine hundred meters separating Airon and the team from whom he intended to take his second scroll. Immediately upon noticing them from above, he descended to the forest floor and took cover behind a nearby tree before the trio could spot him. Unfortunately, though, his somewhat sloppy entrance resulted in the cracking of a small branch, which immediately brought suspicions to one of the resting genin.
????: What the heck was that?
????: Hide, what’s up?
Hide: (He scanned the area where Airon was hiding a few more times before finally giving up the search and turning to his teammate.) …Nothing. I thought I heard something.
????: Well then, pull out a kunai and keep looking around. This is a battleground. You can’t just shrug it off, if you think we’re being watched.
Hide: …Right.
Slowly but surely, the three began searching the nearby vegetation for their unwanted spectator, forcing Airon to employ some basic chakra techniques to move higher up the trunk of the tree.
Airon: (They’re being pretty cautious. Hmm, …this might be a more interesting challenge than I thought. …But, unfortunately, I’ve got no time to toy around with you three, so I’ll have to make this quick.)
Reaching into his jacket, he pulled out what appeared to be three small smoke bombs and, using the strings to which they were attached, tied each of them to a kunai before tossing them one by one at the genin that were searching for him. Already on high alert, the three easily avoided them.
????: Whoa! We’re under attack!
????: Did you see where they came from!?
????: No, did you!?
????: Why do you think I asked YOU!? Hey, Hide! Did you see who threw them!?
Their teammate, however, wasn’t looking for their place of origin, but rather at the kunai themselves…, or more specifically, at the small ball to which each was attached.
Hide: GUYS, STEP BACK!!
????: Huh!?
Before his teammates could comprehend the reasoning behind his alarming tone, both found themselves caught up in a small cloud of light-purple haze. Somewhat put off by the promptness of this new turn of events, an involuntary motion forced the two to brace themselves for the attack that was sure to follow. …Little did they know that it had already occurred.
????: Where the heck is this guy!? What’s he…he…
????: Kazuya! Hey, Hide, you still…you still…there…
Before either of them knew it, the two genin had collapsed in the midst of Airon’s smoke bombs. Their teammate, who had narrowly escaped this fate himself, spent the following minute pondering how their unseen enemy could have brought about this without leaving his hiding spot. …The answer wasn’t that difficult to figure out.
Hide: (…Sleeping gas…) Pretty clever, whoever you are! But, you’re gonna have to do a lot better than that to get me, too!
Seeing no reason to continue hiding from him, Airon returned to the forest floor and revealed himself to the fretful genin.
Airon: I’d hate to break it to you, my friend, but your comrades are out cold and, thanks to that little recipe of mine, they’ll be staying that way for at least six more hours. Granted, they’ve got almost five days to get their acts back together and help you complete the stage, …but who’s to say someone or something won’t come by while they’re still asleep?
Having always had a knack for intimidation, it didn’t take much for Airon to see that his opponent was already becoming afraid of him.
Airon: It certainly would help if their teammate was awake to keep an eye on them until they woke up. Personally, I could care less whether you are or not, but two things are for certain. …I’d rather nobody had to die during these exams…and I’m not leaving until your scroll is in my hands. If you don’t have it, then just tell me which of them does, but please don’t make this more difficult than it has to be.
Realizing that there was almost no way around this fate, the genin slowly began walking over to one of his resting teammates before kneeling down, reaching into his jacket, and pulling out an earth scroll, the same one that Airon’s team needed to move forward in the competition.
Hide: …Fine. …Here, TAKE IT!!
Without warning, he tossed the sealed parchment as hard as he could manage, forcing Airon to brace himself before catching it in his stomach, sending him sliding back a short distance. Feigning surprise at his actions, he lifted his head in time to catch a glimpse of his opponent’s rapid approach, which ended with a kunai lodged in Airon’s chest…and a small cloud of smoke where he once stood.
Hide: Huh? What the he-
Before he knew what had hit him, the young genin was lying unconscious on the ground, the real Airon having emerging from his hiding place. After checking his pulse to ensure that he survived the blow to the back of his head, he walked over to pick up the earth scroll lying a few feet away, tucking it into his jacket before forming a hand sign.
Airon: (Huhhh, …why couldn’t you just give me the stupid thing without forcing my hand? …It was hardly even worth my time.) …Shadow Clone Jutsu!
Within a fraction of a second, an exact duplicate of Airon appeared out of thin air. Once it had done so, the original reached into the pouch around his waist and pulled out nearly a dozen explosive tags before handing them to his doppelganger.
Airon: Lay them side by side and set these paper bombs up around them. That should at least give them some protection.
Airon’s clone: Got it.
While his clone took care of any remaining affairs, Airon immediately began taking off in the direction of the tower, hoping that his friends and siblings hadn’t run into any trouble during his absence. …Intrusion on Inase’s part would soon wipe away these hopes.
Inase: (Airon, where are you!?)
Airon: (Confused by the apparent frustration residing in her voice, he eventually disregarded it and answered her.) (I just got my hands on an earth scroll. I’m heading ba-)
Inase: (Good! Then, hurry up and get back here! We’ve just run into a bit of trouble!)
Muttering under his breath in aggravation, Airon stopped a moment to scan his surroundings before continuing onward, this time even faster than before.
Airon: (…Alright, I’m on my way. Inase, what’s going on over there?)
Inase: (…It’s Raiden. …He and Minto are about to fight.)
The Sarutobi brothers meet on the battlefield!!!
