Chapter 008: Recollecting History
Sakura: Naruto…Naruto.
Naruto: Huh?
Sakura: We were about to start heading off without you.
Looking at her and Sasuke for a moment, Naruto turned back to Obito’s monument a moment longer before responding.
Naruto: Oh. …Sorry.
Following the path of his eyes, Sasuke also set his sights on the large statue, which portrayed the former criminal holding the orange mask that he used to hide his identity for so long. Thinking back to Naruto’s moment of triumph in the war that claimed Obito’s life, he quickly understood what he was thinking about and looked over at him to speak.
Sasuke: I don’t think anything you’ve accomplished since could have surpassed that moment, Naruto.
Naruto: (Taking notice of this statement, he tilted his head slightly to bring Sasuke into his field of vision.) …His change of heart?
Seeing the nod that Sasuke was giving him, he looked back at the monument and thought about that moment himself, a smile slowly growing on his face as he ventured deeper into his memory of the final battle of that war…and the effects it had on the future they now lived in.
Naruto: Yeah. …Hehe, that was pretty awesome.
Sasuke: (Seeing the peaceful expression on his face, he decided to use this opportunity to mess with Naruto’s head, wearing a smirk as he spoke.) Hmph, it never did stop you from being a loser, though.
Of course, Sasuke’s only intention by making this remark was to poke at Naruto’s self-restraint, something that he used to be able to do with no effort, though granted, only because his mere presence was once enough to aggravate Naruto to no end. …However, this didn’t stop Naruto from responding in his typical over-the-top manner.
Naruto: Grrrgggrrrrrrhhh, YEAH AND YOU HAVE ROOM TO TALK, SASUKE!!! I DON’T SEE YOU WEARING A ROBE THAT SAYS SIXTH HOKAGE ON THE BACK OF IT!!! AND I ALSO DON’T RECALL ME BEING THE ONE LAYING FLAT ON MY ASS AFTER THAT BATTLE!!!
Not quite expecting this sort of reply, Sasuke quickly found himself being dragged down to Naruto’s level.
Sasuke: THAT MATCH WAS A TIE!! AND THAT’S ONLY BECAUSE I HESITATED AT ONE POINT!! AND WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU WEREN’T LYING ON YOUR ASS!? I SPENT ONE WEEK IN THE HOSPITAL WHEN WE RETURNED!! YOU SPENT THREE!!
Naruto: OF COURSE I DID!!! DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH FIGHTING I WAS DOING AND HOW MUCH CHAKRA I WAS USING UP BY THAT POINT!!? AND WHAT WERE YOU DOING WHILE I FOUGHT THE TEN-TAILS!!? TALKING TO OROCHIMARU AND THE HOKA-!!
Before he could finish, Naruto found himself lying on the ground with the imprint of Sakura’s fist in his chest. Being her husband, Sasuke eluded this fate, though he was still forced to release her hand to prevent her from breaking the bones in his fingers.
Sakura: WELL!? ARE YOU TWO NUMBSKULLS DONE NOW!?
Hoping to avoid further pain, they quickly responded with the same answer, …as well as the same thought in mind.
Naruto and Sasuke: Ugh, yes, Sakura! (Jeez, what the heck is HER problem!?)
Sakura: (Having managed to settle their dispute for them, her expression changed from one of rage to one of concern.) Good. …You guys, it’s been about almost forty years. This shouldn’t be happening. You’re supposed to be best friends. …Sasuke, you did kinda start the whole thing…and Naruto, you should’ve known that he was just joking around. You’re the sixth Hokage…and you’re the leader of the ANBU. Now please, start acting your ages and living up to your titles.
Her point well made, the two lowered their heads as a sense of shame and minor guilt fell over them.
Naruto and Sasuke: Alright. …Sorry, Sakura.
Sakura: Don’t apologize to ME! Apologize to each other!
Slightly startled, both of them swallowed what air was in their mouths before turning to face each other. After spending a moment there in silence, Naruto finally spoke up first, not wanting to be hit by Sakura again.
Naruto: Uhhh, sorry about that, Sasuke. …Guess I should’ve known better than to spaz out like that.
Sasuke: (Wearing an expression that suggested immense irritation on his part, he eventually complied with his wife’s demands.) Huhhhh, …yeah, so am I.
After another moment of standing there without speaking, the two of them slowly began to smile before turning back to Sakura to ensure she was satisfied. Surely enough, upon noticing their smiles, she quickly formed one of her own.
Sakura: Now then, what do you say we start moving along?
Walking over to take her husband’s hand in hers once again, the two began walking away as Naruto took one last moment to gaze over at Obito’s monument. Letting his last few memories of him pass through his mind, he eventually smiled up at this rendering of his former enemy before following after them, intertwining his fingers behind his head as soon as he caught up to them.
The three engaged in small talk as they ventured through their village, no specific destination in mind. Upon reaching the gate, they simply turned around and began making their way back towards the Hokage monument. Having almost completely made their way back to the other side of the village, they eventually stopped for a break and some lunch at Ichiraku’s Ramen Shop, which was now operated by the late owner’s daughter, Ayame. Upon finishing their meals, which didn’t take too long, much to Sakura and Sasuke’s surprise, Naruto and Sasuke placed an equal sum of money at the end of their table before getting up to leave.
Ayame: Thank you! You guys come back soon, alright?
Naruto: Hehehehe, you can count on that, Ayame!
Waving goodbye to her, the three stepped outside, at which point Naruto felt something bump against his toes. Looking down in surprise, he saw a small, red ball swaying back and forth upon the ground and quickly picked it up before gazing around in search of its owner. Shortly after, three small children walked up to him, the biggest among them asking if he would return it. Remaining silent for a moment, he eventually smiled and dropped the ball in the boy’s arms, prompting him to thank him before running off with his friends to continue their game. Naruto simply stood there a moment contemplating this random turn of events, his smile gradually shaping into his trademark grin.
Naruto: Hehehehe, always nice to see the kids in this village playing together.
Thinking back to the time he spent staring at Obito’s monument in the cemetery, a much more dismal thought suddenly entered his mind, causing his grin to disappear shortly after it emerged.
Naruto: …It kinda makes me wonder how many of them might’ve never been here, …if not for him.
The meaning behind his words going without saying, Sakura reached up and placed her hand on his shoulder, causing him to turn around in surprise.
Sakura: And for you, Naruto.
Sasuke nodded in full agreement with his wife’s opinion, though Naruto wasn’t nearly as willing to go along with her.
Naruto: …I couldn’t have done what he did in a million years.
Sakura: And he WOULDn’t have done what he did in a million years, …not if you hadn’t gotten through to him. …You’re just as responsible for all those that were revived in the war as he is.
Sasuke: …And you’re responsible for saving a lot more lives than that, Naruto. …I’m living proof of that, …as are my children and grandchildren.
While he wasn’t above accepting praise from others, Naruto still wasn’t keen to receiving credit that he believed rightfully belonged to Obito. Nonetheless, for the sake of avoiding more disagreements with the two of them today, he simply smiled in appreciation for their commendation.
Naruto: …Thanks, guys.
Turning back around to find that the children had run off to a different area of the village, he looked around one last time before following Sasuke and Sakura towards the Hokage monument. Bypassing the Academy, which rested at its base, the three began ascending the long wooden pathway that decorated the mountainside until they finally reached its summit. There they remained, standing alongside one another as they looked down on the enormous village below them. On these walks, which they took together on a near-daily basis, it was here where most of their conversations took place.
Sasuke: (Finding a great deal of beauty in the village laid out in front of him, memories of his time away from it steadily began emerging in his mind, bringing hints of despair and regret to his face.) Looking back, …it makes me wonder why I ever felt the urge to destroy this place.
Naruto: (Looking past Sakura, who was also staring wonderingly at her husband, he eventually turned away, doing some thinking of his own before looking back.) You had every good reason to hate this village, Sasuke, …and you still do.
Rather surprised by this response, Sasuke’s eyes opened a little wider before fixating their attention on Naruto. …Even after thirty-eight years, he was still amazed by how much faith he placed in him.
Naruto: But, you decided to break the cycle of hatred and seek out peace instead of revenge. …Heh, and considering how much stuff you forgave the village for, I’d say that makes you a better person that I am.
Sasuke: (While his façade would never let it show, he couldn’t help but feel flattered by such praise from his equal.) Hm, well, I could never agree with that, Naruto. …But, thank you.
He eventually allowed the smile he was holding back to come into view, bringing one to the faces of his former teammates, as well. This image compelled Sakura to recall Sasuke’s return to the village after three long years, …the first time she had ever seen him wearing a genuine smile. The memory alone was enough to bring a single tear of joy to her eye, something that Sasuke and Naruto took notice of.
Naruto: Hey, Sakura, what’s up?
Sasuke: (Concerned for his wife’s feelings, he released her hand so that he could place his arm over her shoulder in an effort to cheer her up.) …Are you alright?
Sakura: (Preferring that they didn’t worry, she quickly wiped the tear away with her hand.) Yeah, …I’m fine. So, are we gonna talk about the past all day or can we talk about what’s going on right now for a little while?
One thing in particular was on her mind as she said this, something that didn’t take long for Naruto or Sasuke to figure out.
Naruto: Hehe, there sure is a lot to look forward to right now, isn’t there? …It’s hard to believe they’ve grown so much already in such a short time.
Sakura: …Our grandchildren?
Naruto: Well, all of the grandkids in this village, really. Mine, yours, Shikamaru’s, Chōji’s, Lee’s, …Neji’s, …just everybody.
Sasuke: That’s true. …Hmph, I suppose the real question, though, is…whose will come out on top this year.
Somewhat disappointed by the unrelenting rivalry they still shared well into their older years, Sakura reached her hand out and softly hit Sasuke in the stomach. …Though she had intended for it to be gentler, her excessive strength forced her husband to clench his chest and bend over in pain, something that Naruto couldn’t help chuckling at as Sakura checked to see if he was alright.
Sasuke: …Oww, …rather rough on your part, huh, Sakura?
Sakura: …Sorry, Sasuke, but come on. You two already forced Itachi and Jiraiya to waste their childhoods trying to best each other. You can’t just let our grandchildren have fun competing without turning it into a rivalry?
Naruto: Hehehehe, …I guess you’ve got a point, Sakura. How about you, Sasuke?
Sasuke: (Regaining his composure, he looked back up at Naruto with his ever-so confident smirk.) Hmph, I guess we don’t need to push it on them. …Besides, I think it would be safe to say that the Uchiha and the Uzumaki clans already have a natural competition going on between them.
Naruto: Hehe, …it’s the Namikaze clan, Sasuke. Remember, Jiraiya started using my dad’s name a long time ago.
Sasuke: Hm? …Oh, that is true, isn’t it?
Sakura: …Why did he ever decide on doing that, by the way?
Naruto: Ehhh, …not sure. He just liked it better than Uzumaki, I guess. Either that, or it was something about that technically being his real name, I dunno.
This conversation gradually began bringing images of Jiraiya to Sasuke’s mind. …Having been charging with training both him and his own son, he was well aware of the man’s habit for being compulsive.
Sasuke: Hmhmhmhm, …he certainly is your son, Naruto.
Naruto: Hehehe, I don’t know much about that. To be honest, he’s kinda got more of Hinata in him than me.
Sakura: Hm, well, maybe in the eyes, but he definitely looks and acts more like you.
Naruto: Around his friends, yeah, but have you seen the way he raises his kids? He’s caring, I give him that, but there’s such a thing as being overprotective, you know? I mean, Airon and Inase had to wait years after graduating before he let them actually become genin! They probably could’ve been chūnin by now, maybe even jōnin in Airon’s case!
Sasuke: Hmm, and quite the effect that decision made, Naruto. Manako spent several years evading the exams, …waiting for your grandson to attend them, as well.
The images of both boys present in their minds, their years of growth and heavy progress began to dawn on them, …as did the near parallelism between their rivalry and that of their grandsons. Sakura, too, was amazed by how the boys and their grandfathers shared so many similarities, both in prowess and in relation to one another.
Sakura: …They did turn out to be pretty good friends, didn’t they?
Sasuke: Indeed, they have. …After all, they do share the same views on many different things. …They’ve both gotten so powerful in just thirteen years, it's hard to imagine. It won’t be long before they surpass even us.
Naruto: (Looking up at the bright blue sky of mid-day, a small group of birds flew over the village as a smile emerged on his face.) …Yeah. I’m looking forward to that day.
Their conversation having ended for now, the three remained there a while longer, staring at the enormous village laid out in front of their eyes. Little did they know that several hundred feet below them, within the large building resting at the base of the mountain, their grandchildren were waiting patiently for their proctor to start the written exams. Taking another minute to inspect the crowd of anxious genin before him, the seasoned shinobi, who wore circular glasses and a large, sea-green overcoat, turned to his assistant and motioned for him to begin collecting the paperwork from each contestant.
Shino: Now, then. …Let’s begin.
The Chūnin exams are about to get underway!!!

If you're wondering, yes, the years have softened Sasuke up a bit. But, hey, what do you expect after almost four decades?xd
