What confuses me is that Naruto can accomplish this but outside of battle, he's a clueless teenager. :|

I think Naruto's talk with Nagato was better, because if Naruto couldn't successfully convince Nagato, he would have to fight both him and his aide to settle the fight, this complemented by the fact that Naruto was exhausted. He also had less information than with Obito. The Tale of the Gutsy Ninja being the key to convincing him was likely a last-minute idea.

Aren't/Weren't we all clueless teenagers? Naruto was also raised as a fighter and knows mostly fighting. He doesn't catch social queues like the rest of us who may have had a good social background. Not having parents there for you and losing your "bestfriend" can make you clueless. Especially when your mentor is a perverted oldman
