Chapter 66: The Man Inside and One Outside
“What do you mean it's a lie?” Kankuro asks.
“The information we thought we received was all false. It was bait into the trap that we fell in.” Koga says.
“Explain.” Gaara says, crossing his fingers.
“Our trail went cold very quickly and we were wondering around in circles until nearly a week ago. Eventually the trail took us deep into the Land of Rice and eventually inside Otogakure. The trail had taken us right to Kabuto and we found his location in an underground facility. At least that's what we thought.” Koga begins. Koga pauses and looks down with guilt. “I saw Mika and I couldn't help myself. I rushed in and the others came shortly after behind me. Everything had been an illusion set by Kabuto and that Shinji shinobi to lure us in. The illusion activated an affect within the base that had a powerful sound behind it. The sound based technique completely disoriented us but there was something in that facility, something I managed to see even while I was inside the affects of the illusion.” Koga says, “I was wrong, it wasn't all a complete lie. What I saw, nobody else saw and I'm the only one who realized that everything we saw was a trick inside of an illusion but I never told them, I didn't think I would need to until we got back to Konoha or Suna but I guess I was wrong.” Koga shifts his head partially towards Koji, who stands behind him completely bairn of any expression. “I stumbled upon some sort of files that looked like research. I was severely light headed from the illusion almost as if I had been sedated but from what I saw it looked like plans to drain Mika of her clan's abilities and somehow implant them into someone. It's really only more of the same, we already knew that Kabuto wanted to capture Mika for her clan's abilities. That's the only relevant thing I can say I found.”
“Gaara...” Kankuro turns and faces his brother.
“Koji, to the best of your understanding, what has become of the rest of your unit and the tracking unit?” Gaara asks.
“Our plan was full proof, should everything have gone as intended, the rest of the Suna shinobi should be making their way back safely. However, I have many doubts about the Tracking Unit.” Koji says.
Gaara lets out a sigh of disappointment, “Very well, I'll send a report to Naruto. Koga-kun, you're dismissed.” Koga bows and he exits the room.
“Gaara, what are you thinking?” Kankuro asks. Kankuro stops and notices Koji is still in the room. “Koji...do you have something else to add?” Kankuro's question is rhetoric as he implies for Koji to leave.
“Yes,” Gaara and Kankuro both look at the genin. “It's about what happened at last year's festival.” Kankuro and Gaara quickly exchange glances. “It occurred to me before I left on the mission when you mentioned the Jomae village.”
“Wait, we didn't say anything about Jomae while you were here.” Kankuro points out.
“I hadn't left the hall way completely when you began talking. I heard you mention the village and something in my head rattled.”
“Did you remember something?”
“I remember, the Jomae shinobi was paralyzed by a jutsu. Before I could see anything I was knocked unconscious.” Koji says. “Another shinobi defeated the Jomae shinobi.”
“That's correct,” Gaara starts, “We've established that for a while.”
Koji looks at Gaara and then Kankuro. He stares longer at Kankuro and squints his eyes, “I can tell when you're hiding something sensei. Even when you're expression is blank, I can tell.” Koji says, “The person who killed the Jomae shinobi, he was a member of Sunagakure wasn't he?” Koji asks.
Kankuro looks at Gaara and he bows his head down slightly, allowing Kankuro to speak. “Yes, we've concluded that there is a spy working inside Suna, specifically in the Anbu Black Ops. We've been unsuccessful in finding this person and it's because of this that we've been reluctant to send the Anbu on any extensive out of village missions so that we could keep an eye on them. However there was no sure fire way to do so. Currently only Gaara and myself know of it, and now that you know...” Kankuro looks towards Gaara who still has his eyes closed. “This mission that I went on with Koichi and Ryoko was to capture Jomae's leader and figure out who the spy within our ranks is. After we get the results, all we'll have left to do is confront him and figure out what his intentions a—”
“Kazekage-sama!” The door flies open and a shinobi comes through the door frantically.
Gaara opens his eyes and looks at the shinobi, “What is it?”
“The leader of the Jomae village...he—”
“He what?!” Kankuro snaps.
“He's dead...his mind has been completely destroyed.” The shinobi answers.
“What are you talking about?” Gaara asks.
“We were trying to drain his mind for the information you were seeking but it was locked. Even our most advanced mind readers had difficulty accessing the memories that we were looking for. We eventually got past the mental barricade, but the moment we did there was some sort of seal the went off and there was a huge electrical impulse that ran through his brain and his subconscious. The shinobi reading his mind was also killed, but the impulse destroyed every trace of his mind and shut down all his brains functions.” The shinobi explains quickly.
“I thought you searched him and completely blocked his chakra!” Kankuro states.
“We did, but this seal, it was hidden inside his mind, it was specifically designed as a booby trap to go off should anybody break through the mental barricade. There was no way of knowing about this before hand. These Jomae shinobi...they truly don't reveal any of their secrets.”
Kankuro sucks his teeth and turns to Gaara, “What are we going to do now Gaara? We have no leads and now...things can only get worse.”
Gaara sits in silence for a brief moment with his eyes closed. The room remains with an eerie silence as Gaara contemplates the situation. He opens his eyes and leans into his desk with his hands interlocked. “There's only one thing we can do now.” Gaara says.
~Main Island of the Land of Water~
Two young Kirigakure shinobi stand in the misty forest some Kilometers outside of Kirigakure.
“I hate the sea watch, it always gives me the creeps being out here in this mist.” One shinobi says timidly. “You never know what's going to happen, or who's going to pop up.”
“Oh for god's sake will you shut the hell up already!” His partner says in severe aggravation. “You're a Kiri shinobi for crying out loud. You were raised in this mist so you can see in it perfectly fine, you have fought in this terrain your whole life, and you're a shinobi who's supposed to be without fear. I really don't understand how you were taken as the apprentice of one of the Seven Swordsmen.”
“He has much more potential than he lets on.” A shinobi appears out of nowhere beside the timid shinobi, placing his hand on his shoulder. The other shinobi flinches, startled at the shinobi's appearance, yet the timid shinobi doesn't react a bit.
“What the hell, he just came out of nowhere and you're acting like nothing happened.” The shinobi says.
“Well I knew Chojuro-sensei was here already.”
“The hell, you can sense the presence of one of the Swordsman, probably the most stealthy shinobi in our village and you're worried about shit popping up and surprising you?”
“Well who knows who else can hide in the mist, I mean you can never be 100% sure, what if there's somebody here now?” The shinobi says.
“Honestly Chojuro-senpai, why did you choose him?” The shinobi asks.
“He reminds me of myself when I was younger. I eventually grew out of it...well somewhat I would say hehe.” Chojuro blushes slightly and scratches his cheek.
“What are you doing here anyway sensei? You've been watching us for a little while.” The shinobi says.
“I wanted to see how my student was doing on his sea watch duties. I was thinking of doing some training with you on the southern most islands where the mist is thickest. However I was told by the Mizukage to come and relieve you of duty since you guys have been out here a while.” Chojuro says, “So head on back to the village and check in at the academy to clock in for the day, oh and Zen, I want you to work on that form for tomorrow.”
“Yes sensei.” Zen says. The two shinobi leave and Chojuro watches as the disappear in the mist. Several minute pass and Chojuro gets a more serious expression on his face.
“You can stop hiding now.” Chojuro says. Foot steps can be seen by Chojuro a few meters out and a figure begins to appear out of thin air.
“That student of yours, he's very perceptive. Was he really capable of detecting your presences?” A masked shinobi says.
“If I truly wanted to hide from him I could have, although he is very sharp in his senses. I kept him focused on me in the event he might have picked up on your presences.”
“I'm not as adapt as most Kiri shinobi are in hiding in the mist but I would say I fair enough.” The shinobi is revealed even more to be an Anbu shinobi though not of Kiri. “The Hokage is extremely worried about what's going on behind the scenes of Kiri in terms of your village's Bijuu and Jinchuuriki.” The shinobi says.
“I know...I'm concerned too, which is why I agreed to this,” Chojuro clinches his fingers, “The aftermath on the war was especially hard for Kiri. Our village and country being as small as it is. Though we've managed to survive and prosper rather well, it was all thanks to our neutrality in the previous wars. The Fourth Great War was a dire situation and required our assistance, though the Daimyou was right in his hesitation. And with Mei-sama being killed we were in chaos.”
“Things were hard for all of the nations, even Konoha. Nobody expected the power Akatsuki would unlock.”
“Our new Mizukage took charge over the dismay that plagued Kiri after the war. She truly did bring us to our highest point. However she's masked her ambition underneath the surface. She masks what she's truly aiming for until it's too late for anybody to do anything about it.” Chojuro says.
“I have a question Chojuro. You who were so loyal to your village, why would you betray it for Konoha?” The Anbu asks.
“I'm not betraying my village!” Chojuro snaps, “I'm probably the only one who's trying to save it. Rokudaime Mizukage...her plans for the village are to bring herself to a higher power, she's doesn't care of much of Kiri is harmed in the process in order for her to ascend. That's what I want to stop, I want to stop her before she has the chance to take more drastic and dangerous measures.”
“I see, so with that out in the open, what have you managed to find out about the Rokubi?” The Anbu shinobi asks.
“This isn't just dealing with the Rokubi, he's only the first.” Chojuro says with an ominous tone.
~Several Hours Pass (Northwest in Land of Fire)~
“We have several severely wounded up ahead, our objective is to stabilize them. Team A will set up a perimeter barrier, Team B will set the internal barrier and Team C will administer the emergency aid.” Sakura says to a large unit of shinobi. “Kana, I want you to be in Team C with Ino and myself.”
Kana widens her eyes a little bit in surprise, “Me, but senpai I—”
“No buts Kana,” Ino says, “These are your orders and you will follow them.”
“But shishou, I've never done this type of aid in the field before, I don't think—”
“That's good, don't think,” Sakura cuts off the kunoichi, “You cannot doubt yourself or think about whether or not you are capable of doing something out in the field. You need to throw your mind into what must be done and you must do it. Not try, do it. We have men with fatal injuries just up ahead and they're depending on us to save them and bring them back to the village safely. You limit yourself by thinking of what you are capable of. The testament of a true medic is to surpass the expectations of themselves when their comrades are in need. I was new once as well, the only way to get experience in the field is to do so.”
Kana takes a deep breath and composes herself, “Alright, I understand.”
The injured shinobi soon come into sight and the medical unit quickly rushes forward and they take their positions as ordered by Sakura. The shinobi in Team A span out before any of the other shinobi get in a circle some distance keeping the injured in the center. Each individual shinobi takes out scrolls and places them on the ground as they sit and set up a barrier. The second team does the same a few meters inwards from the outer barrier and they set up another barrier, keeping the last team and the injured company in. Sakura notices Shino among the injured shinobi and she goes to him first while Ino, Kana, and the remaining members of the last team help aid the others.
“Shino, are you alright?!” Sakura asks, beginning to healing his immediate wounds. Shino has a cut on his face and his jacket is torn across the torso and he has a large gash from a blade through his chest, which runs deep as the crimson blood mixes with the rest of his black uniform. “Everybody, take care of the more serious wounds first, anything that requires more tender care, set up an area and place them with chakra healing units until Ino and myself make it to them!”
“Sakura...” Shino begins, his breath is heavy as he tries to get up.
“Shino, stop moving, I need to stop the bleeding and close this wound.”
“It's a trap...” Shino says.
“What?”
“Sakura-sama, the outer barrier has been taken down. The team has all been killed.” A medic says.
“What?! How can that be, the barrier can only be broken from the inside.”
“Which is exactly what happened,” A voice says from distance away. Sakura and the others look in the distance and a silhouette can be seen in the shadows caused by the trees. The shadowed figure opens his eyes partially revealing a menacing red pigment. Sakura's eyes begin to widen in utter horrifying surprise. The figure open his eyes completely, revealing the Sharingan.
Sakura remains frozen in shock and confusion as she gazes into the crimson red eyes. “Sasuke?!”
