Chapter 64: Objectives

Koichi and Ryoko make their way through the Jomae village, disguised. They enter the backwater part of the village into the forest and head uphill towards a cave. They stop a few meters back behind a tree, with the cave in sight.

“There's about six shinobi inside, he has to be inside,” Ryoko says.

“You two!” A voice says from behind. Koichi and Ryoko turn and remained composed, “What are you doing here?” The shinobi asks.

“We were just—”

“I don't want to hear it, if you were called up there, you best to get up there. Don't keep him waiting, we need to move out as quickly as possible.” The shinobi says with haste, cutting off Koichi.

“Our apologies.” Ryoko says. She bows and Koichi and Ryoko head up into the cave. The shinobi heads back down and he makes a small cynical smile. “What are we going to do now?” Ryoko asks.

“Stick to the plan, we just need to wait for Kankuro and we can take them by surprise.” Koichi whispers back. Koichi and Ryoko make it into the gave. The cave is narrow and dimly lit with candles along the walls. The end of the dark path shows a light which gradually increases as Koichi and Ryoko walk towards it. When they finally make it to the end, the cave opens up into a wide area where large flames illuminate area along the walls.

A tall, well built man stands before the small group of shinobi, all of them kneeling before him. When Koichi and Ryoko come to open area, they do the same. “Anything else to report?” The shinobi asks the others.

“Sir, a small clan of shinobi was discovered some klicks north east of here,” One shinobi says, “From what could be deduced in the short amount of time, it seems as though they're a clan with no special traits or abilities.”

“Did you spot any potential recruits?”

“No sir, the clan is predominately adults. The children of the clan are too old to assimilate.”

“Hmm, very well. What about you two?” The leader address Koichi and Ryoko.

“U, us sir?” Koichi says with a slight stutter.

“Yes you, you obviously came up here with something significant to report, otherwise you left your post for nothing. Now what do you have to report?”

“Our apologies sir,” Ryoko says confidently, “We noticed spies from Konoha more than a Kilometer away. They must have been following us since our previous position. If we are to move, we should hurry and cover our tracks.” Ryoko's words are spoken clearly and confidently in an attempt to maintain the cover of her and Koichi.

“Hmm I see.” The leader makes the snake hand seal and suddenly the a large section of the earth erupts upwards, sealing the cave and the shinobi inside, “I'll admit you're very skilled in your deception Suna shinobi. You spoke so professionally that, if I didn't already know of your arrival, I would've believed you.”

Koichi and Ryoko leap back and they dispel the transformation technique as the other six Jomae shinobi and their leader get up and on their guard. “So you were expecting us.” Koichi says.

“Of course we were. Did you honestly think you were skilled enough to track us down by yourselves? You took the bait.” The shinobi says.

Koichi smiles, “Well, just because you were expecting us doesn't mean you can capture us. You've trapped yourselves in here with us.” Koichi goes to place his hand on the ground and suddenly two shinobi begin to emerge from the ground and shoot chains around him and they attempt to do the same to Ryoko. Ryoko leaps back and lands on the on the wall of the cave. Just as Ryoko lands on the cave wall, one more shinobi emerges and holds her in a headlock.

“You honestly think we didn't prepare for you and your little squad?” The leader asks sarcastically, “You and your other teammate have already been taken care of. Now we finally have leverage over Suna, that is if they wish to reclaim their Jinchuuriki intact.”

“Damn it,” Koichi attempts to break free of the chains but he's held by the two shinobi tightly.

“Knock them out now!” The leader shouts, The shinobi holding Ryoko begins to apply more pressure to her neck and the shinobi holding Koichi make the half tiger seal and electrocute the chains. Ryoko gasps for air and Koichi grits his teeth. Both of them fall unconscious from their respective holds and the Jomae shinobi smile. “Hurry and seal off their abilities and prepare for departure...” Just then a faint cracking is heard. The leader looks at Koichi as he kneels on the ground and he sees parts of his face chipping off. The Jomae shinobi holding feels small chips of sand fall onto his arm coming from Ryoko's face. “What the hell?” The shinobi walks over to Koichi and violently grabs him by the collar and looks into his face only to see it constructed entirely brown and constructed of sand and it suddenly falls to pieces. The same happens with Ryoko's body and both are revealed to be mere sand clones.

Just then Koichi falls from the ceiling of the cave and places his hand down on the ground. The leader jumps up as Koichi converts the entire cave floor into sand. “Iku Sabaku Kyu (Several Sand Coffins)!” As the entire ground floor is converted into sand, Koichi has the sand spring up and entrap all the Jomae shinobi in sand from the neck down. The shinobi imbedded in the wall disappears before he is captured. The head Jomae shinobi, still in the air takes out several kunai as the sand rises to try and capture him. He launches them and makes the tiger seal and they explode, flailing the sand in all directions. The sand falls and the shinobi is completely out of sight. “Damn it,” Koichi makes three seals and releases the full binding of his tag and heads to the exit of the cave. He punches through the stone blocking the way and he heads out of the cave.

Several Jomae shinobi appear outside the cave in their stances ready to fight Koichi. “Koichi,” as static voice says in his ear. Koichi places his fingers to his left ear.

“Do it now.” Koichi responds. A short moment after, several explosions go off below in the village and they shake the foundation of the earth for several meters. The shinobi facing Koichi begin to stumble and just as they regain their balance, Koichi appears in between all of them, running through them, attempting to leave.

“He's escaping, get him!” Just after the shinobi says that a large wave of sand comes out of the cave, carrying the other Jomae shinobi trapped from before. The sand collides with all of them.

“Koichi!” Ryoko says over the radio.

“He just disappeared, I don't know where he is?” Koichi says.

“He's heading south, opposite of you.” Koichi stops and begins to turn around, “Kankuro and Crow covered the area before you entered the cave just in case. Go and help him.”

“What about you?”

“I can handle this over here, I'll keep the other shinobi off of you guys until you capture him.”

“Alright.” Koichi says. Koichi heads in pursuit of the Jomae leader at top speed, *I'm not letting you get away, not this time.*
~Inside Land of Rice~

Mako finishes tending to a wounded shinobi's on his chest while the rest of the Suna unit prepare for their departure. Tenra appears with two other shinobi beside him before Takashi and Koji. “Koji?” Tenra says with surprise at the young shinobi's presence.

“Koji was sent on the medical squad but he was sent to act as their escort to us mainly.” Takashi briefly explains.

“It doesn't matter,” Tenra shakes his head, “We scouted out the area and laid traps. The rest of the Oto unit has been traveling around a large radius around our position aimlessly, I assume that's your doing.” Tenra addresses Koji. Koji doesn't say anything, noticing the rhetoric. “We have enough time to make it to the tracking unit's location if we depart now. Although our only way to them would be to go through the forces that trapped them in the first place. Avoiding conflict is inevitable I'm afraid.”

“That may pose a little bit of a problem.” Takashi says.

“I concur, how many of our men are able bodied?” Tenra asks.

“Of our 16, 12 shinobi are capable of fighting, but nearly half of our unit was injured and the other 3 injured might be a slight hampering. We've picked up the medical squad but they'll be standing back taking care of any further injuries.” Takashi explains.

“What's the situation with the tracking unit?” Koji asks.

“While they were following they drove close towards the village and decided to pull back and find an alternative rout, however upon doing so they apparently stumbled into a trap. From the distress we received, on our travel, they were cornered by a large platoon of 50 shinobi, which branched off and came towards us when the distress called. Now they're currently under fire with 25 shinobi in a corner somewhere south of the village. However the Konoha shinobi Kiba has managed to keep them at bay since they were trapped but he's in a corner as well.” Tenra explains, “Kiba is one of the Konoha 11 but even he finds himself in a bit of trouble with this. To be honest, the only reason the unit hasn't been wiped out yet is because Kiba still holds his position.”

“That's right, now a quarter of our unit is unable to continue and we have another third that is injured and may prove to dampen our endeavors against an already uneven match up. Should the other shinobi that were placed under your genjutsu manage to break out and rejoin their group, we'll have no chance at getting out of this.” Takashi says.

“Our best bet would be to attempt and ambush and hopefully allow for time for the squad to get out and then we call a tactical retreat. We'll draw more of their fire but that is our best chance to get everybody out safely.” Koji says. Takashi sighs and rubs his head and Koji looks at him with confusion.

“There's another thing that's changed the dynamics of our mission,” Tenra says, “The team is holding valuable information, however the chances of getting one or two shinobi free is much more likely than getting the entire unit free. So long as the information received gets back to Konoha and Suna...” Tenra says.

Koji looks with a moderate scowl at the two jounin, understanding their intentions, “So our new objectives are in rescuing only one or two of the squad to preserve the information, rather than risk it with trying to free all of them?” Koji says.

“Thinking of the big picture, we risk loosing more men if we attempt to distract the enemy long enough, especially in our current condition, for everybody to escape. Though it's unfortunate, it's the best way to assure most of our own troops' safety...and the Konoha shinobi have already agreed to this risk in the sake of preserving the information.” Takashi says.

Koji sighs and begins walking past the two jounin, “Very well,” Koji's tone is nonchalant, much to the surprise of the jounin, “just inform me when we're about to depart.”

“You're not going to oppose the plan?” Takashi asks.

“No, I was given orders to lead my squad here and then follow your orders, so that's what I'm going to do. This is the position you've decided to take and my job is to make sure I do my part to make it a success.” Koji heads over with the rest of the unit as well and the two jounin look at each other.

“He's much different than Koichi,” Tenra says.

“That's not saying much since they're fraternal twins, they tend to be different. Though I wonder how that translates between the two of them?” Takashi wonders.

A few short moments pass and the Suna unit stands at attention. Takashi stands before the other 19 shinobi in the unit looking around them as they stand at attention. “Alright, here's the deal. We have only a short window of time to make it to the Konoha squad and then retreat. With out numbers significantly dampened by the surprise, we find ourselves at a disadvantage which calls for us to change up our tactics.” Takashi explains. “We need only to successfully rescue one of the shinobi of the unit, in order to assure the highest success rate of the mission and more importantly, keep the rest of us alive. The unit has already designated their member and our job now is to distract the Oto platoon, long enough to allow them time to escape towards the boarder of the Land of Rice and Fire. Once they've made it to a safe distance a kilo from the border we will retreat as well.”

All the shinobi in the unit stand at attention and listen clearly. Tenra steps out beside Takashi and begins addressing the unit, “We have to pick and choose our men carefully for these tasks. We're doing this in two separate stints. One unit to help escort the shinobi to the border, and the other unit to be used as a distraction,” Tenra says. “Team A will consist of 3 squads and we will act as the distraction. Team B will consist of the remaining 2 squads and escort the shinobi into the Land of Fire. Team A will consist of all the able bodied fighters remaining including the medical squad, but excluding Koji. Koji will take the severely wounded and the moderately wounded shinobi and escort the shinobi. As we don't intend on letting any of the Oto shinobi get near you, Team B's directive is primarily to make it to make it safely through border. Koji and the other three shinobi capable of fighting should be able to be enough cover. With that being said, we need to move out, now!” The entire group nods and they all leap away heading towards their objective.
~Outside Jomae Village~

The Jomae leader continues his escape through southward from the village. He runs through the forest, using the night as his cover. He suddenly leaps back as a kunai lands in front of him. In the shadows of the trees above, a figure appears with shaggy hair. He drops down and Crow is revealed, and controls Kankuro's Salamander puppet as he stands before the Jomae shinobi.

The shinobi steps back, taking out a kunai in his defense. He hears a faint sound from behind him, which rapidly increases. The shinobi leaps up to his left into a tree as a wave of sand crashes down where he stood just moments ago. Koichi appears on top of the sand and he glares at the shinobi. “No way you're getting out of this now, you're trapped.” Koichi says with a stern look on his face.

Koichi stares down his opponent and Koji stares down his objectives for his mission.

I think Koichi and Ryoko should have been guide into the cave by an old guy. It was interesting a the beginning letting the readers believe it was real, however, I think you should have killed them (Sand Clone's) to make the story more exciting. Overall, awesome Chapter.
