He's great at learning techniques its just because kurama's chakra was so massive and interfered with his own he had difficulty controlling it as a kid. Therefore his chakra control wasn't very good. Without kurama he could've easily passed the first time.

Kurama didn't really play a huge part in it mainly because the seal was pretty strong during his days in the academy. It's more to do with the fact he was horrible in chakra control and ridiculously inefficient with his chakra. He didn't even know he had the fox demon until that crazy guy wanting the scroll told him.

he had the five point seal on him to keep the kyuubi's chakra even further under wraps by jiriaya... he put it on him while teaching him chakra control... this is by memory, im not going to look it up... and after the seal was put on him, he was significantly better at controling chakra...

Yeah the chakra/seal didn't mess with his chakra control at all. Oro temporarily screwed up his chakra control with the seal, but that was quickly fixed by Jiraiya before his fight against Neji.

Naruto was told by Ebisu about his chakra and what not...
Orochimaru (forest of death) put a reverse or odd number seal on top of an even number seal on naruto's stomach
which caused a huge disruption in naruto's chakra & kurama's. Jiraiya came and changed it..

Not sure how Naruto would have done , but possibly could have done better without kurama's chakra within him.
