Thing is, I don't know the Japanese version of Naruto, but if they use "sukidesu" then they can either mean real love, or just liking somebody. But it would be clear if it was past tense or not (for example it would have been "sukideshita" then).
But you're right that the translation can make a huge difference when it comes to certain statements.

Yup, there.
And then in the interview when Kishi was asked why Sakura played with Naruto's feelings, he came and said I felt like depicting an honest girl with a stubborn determination.
Therefore the body language he drew for her.
When she tells him he loves him, blushes, when Naruto rejects it thinking she lies, she gets very stubborn, everything matches with Kishi's word, except that part with the "s" that contradicts 80% of his statement.
