After 15 years of publication the story of Naruto that wanted to be Hokage came to an end. The final volume is released today. The one-shot manga Naruto by Kishimoto that was published in the August 1997 issue of Akamaru Jump. The serialized publications started in Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine from the 43rd issue of 1999 to the 50th issue of 2014. Al the chapters are collected into seventy-two tankōbon volumes by Shueisha.

The anime adaptation of the manga is produced by Studio Pierrot and Aniplex.

Now that most of us here already have read it let's get down to it and share our experiences with the manga -

The hits, the misses and all things in between

It's one of the top selling mangas and had earned that spot for good reasons. But exactly what made it so popular?

No matter what happened in Naruto, its fanbase was almost always split in half. One side complaining about the same stuff, the other was obsessively rooting for. Both sides making use of extreme points of view.

Even it's popularity worked against it, at times. People either had unrealistic expectations or dismissed it too quickly one the ground that if it's that popular it cannot be that good. Some picked it to find something they liked in another manga and then were disappointed that it was that story. But hating is easy if you solely focus on bad side of something. And Naruto has them. However, it also has many good things going for it that make it an amazing manga and a cornerstone of the genre and the industry. If people cannot forget Dragon Ball and Son Goku, people will not forget Naruto.

So, what are these good things that made us come back and read it after all these years?"

I have tried to break it down in two segments:

On the positive side:

1- Art- Good, some times excellent, visuals. No excessive detailing to crowd the panels or distract but not so empty that one doesn't get a feel of the atmosphere the writer is trying to create.

Nicely drawn facial expressions, well proportioned characters including animal summons and action sequence of all kinds add to it. Much of the character personalities can be guessed by their body language and stances.

2- Fight sequences- Good, well thought out with many interesting tactics and results.

3- Sometimes creepy but creative and interesting abilities of the both good and evil characters.

4- Great pseudo- scientific explanation for the most part. A couple of abilities (like Susano requirements) had to be retconned but seeing the length of the manga and number of abilities there are few things which writer was not able to make as believable as the rest.

5- A big variety of memorable characters - multidimensional and detailed back grounds. Almost everyone finds someone to relate to.

6- A Multilayered plot planed in quite a detail with multiple foreshadowing and references.

7- Quite a harsh and unforgiving universe, despite the manga averting the tragedy genre completely, giving it a mature feel that increased throughout the years as did the age of its original fanbase.

The back drop of war and suffering it caused to the characters is in extremes and the author lets his popular characters die. Not that common in long running shonnens. There are some examples but usually they were added in a particular arc or two, to be killed off to make the plot more rounded. Such characters rarely have any standalone position.

8- Use of Buddhist symbolism and philosophy taken from traditional mythological tales in Japan all through the manga was another interesting aspect, giving it a different flavour.

9- The philosophy of the villains too is quite developed with definite goals and reasons that at times it almost makes you wonder which side is really right and which one in the wrong. At time it's grey with multiple layers.

10- A happy ending but not without the traces to erase what had occurred. Not only Naruto, Sasuke, Kakashi, Gai all carry war injuries. Jiraiya, Neji, Itachi, Shikaku, Inoichi etc never come back to life. Many other identifiable characters too seem to have aged too fast within short span as a result of chakra sapping.

11-Neat finish. Sasuke and Naruto fight at the climax was only a brawl between two already tired characters. Still the fight and it's result were satisfactory enough. Both paid a price for their personal obsessions. It turns out that peace is a status after all and to maintain it longer honesty, trust, friendly negotiations are the key to it. Everything is answered. The ones still left are the ones that allow the future expansions or little stories if needed.

The final chapters were very close to the fixed last date of the manga. I was quite apprehensive and detested the idea of having to watch a movie for proper ending but the writer managed to give it a final tie in a very condensed form in manga itself. He covered a hell lot in the chapter 699 and 700 and in a style that I liked- who knew Sasuke could say so much!!

12- Successful run for 15 years with a very few breaks on writer's part- we got our weekly fix almost in continuation.( I'm reading some mangas which were either dropped in middle because the author or WSJ gave up on it or takes like forever for a short chapter so I really appreciate the efforts this writer put in. )

On the minus side:

1- Despite writer's attempts to explain and detail everything to make it most believable, in the end the length of the serialization started to take it's toll and the final fights with rapid power ups didn't sit that well with many.

2- The main character don't impress as much as the side ones. It may be a personal peeve but all three members of the main cast had certain irksome traits which stayed in for far too long; Sakura getting the worst of it. Writer seemed to get distracted by side characters too much to notice the main cast was suffering.

3- Kishimoto redefined Ninjas in many ways and they get quite modernized by the end but the outlook of the verse towards female is still conservative. I should have taken the hint that Kishi is going for traditional Kunoichi roles for girls when during Ino/Sakura fight in chunin exams Ino mentioned flower arrangement classes only for female ninjas.

4- The narration of back stories of the characters at the peek of the fight all at once. As much as people liked the back grounds of characters they disliked to get it in single doses when they were eager to see the action instead. It worked on few occasions( e.g. Nagato) but not so much for some others- Kabuto's case being the most notable.

5- Sometimes the moralistic lecture is a bit too long and too loud.

6- The unequal pacing- it's was partially problem of a long serialization still I cannot help and wish that pacing was more balanced out. The whole war arc seemed slower but by the end Kishi had to rush things. The main trios' first real team work didn't make that much impact as it should have despite attempts to highlight that theme back in. The surprise addition of Kaguya while they were still recovering from Madara's sudden end and quick power ups, prove a strong distraction. This brings me to the next point.

7- The final Villain gave a feeling of being one too many.

8- Sometimes it seems the artist was too tired and pressed for time to finish the chapter on schedule resulting in somewhat chaotic pages with background not that clearly defined. But sometimes it's really great so on average I rate the art on positive side but I'm going to cut down the rating because of these problems.

9- It turns out that peace is a status after all and to maintain it longer honesty, trust, negotiations are the key. Yes I'm aware I counted on plus side too. :p Thing is it was somewhat expected result but the theme of talk and negotiation is too heavily used in the manga.

Rating for art- 8

Writing- 7

I rated it 7 finally because the manga was a continuous work in progress published simultaneously. So half a point for the hard work which went into it and another half for creating characters like Itachi, Jiraiya and Neji and having guts to let them die; letting the main characters carry life time injuries and let us feel the miseries of war even happy ending may bring in.

I don't rate it higher considering that after dragging war arc this long, writer had to rush things in the Kaguya arc among other things. And being really bad with female characters.

People forgive lame starts and pointless middles if the third and final parts are well done. Unfortunately writer's fatigue showed up and Naruto falters in these two stages and the slips are showing. So it also gets it's fair share of criticism towards the end.

Over all it's still a good first manga to take a dip in Japanese culture and values, and exciting action sequences and interesting villains and side characters keep you hooked with their stories along with the main plot. But those reading it just to have an opinion on it or to fill the vacuum left by some other manga on eternal hiatus or ending too soon are not going to enjoy it much.

So what do you have to say about your Naruto journey? How long have you been following it and why?

PS: Ideally I shouldn't have to add this but- please remember no bashing the manga, writer or other people. Keep it objective and on topic. If you have nothing worthwhile thing to say then please leave without saying anything, Even if you disagree completely, be polite and courteous.

Thank you.

For me the plus is the whole Ninja system he created. Takes research and ingenuity
Also some of the characters have amazing depth and background story
Since there are multiple type of juts us, the diversity and possibility for counters are that much more. Takes a genius to create all this

The negative was selling Naruto is the hope a billion times with 1000 flashbacks
I would have liked if Kishi explained things from Sasuke's POV often. He kept it till too late. By then I had already categorised him as Emo
Horrible writing with the main female character

Loved how japanese and Buddhist cultures were incarnated into the manga love the story and most of the characters love the art love kishi and his writing
Hated kaguya asspulls like madara susanoo with no eyes and irrelevant fights in war arc also hated that Nejis death was used to bring naruto and hinata closer together when that could have been done better in the movie hate the irrelevant fights in the war arc
Overall it's my favourite manga 9.5/10 for me.

I started to read the manga back in 07 and i never stopped until the final chapter. It was a good long story and i like the way the story had progressed. When i go back and re-read the chapters it still amazes me that i use to wait every week for 8 years to read this story. Was it worth it? The answer is most undoubtedly Yes. This story saved my life, and my way of thinking. This manga grew on me and i grew up with it. If i could meet Kishimoto in real life that would be great. I even remember a time where a user logged on once known as "The Real Masashi Kishimoto". I was never sure if it was him or not but i did give him my thanks for the wonderful story

I started reading about 2 years before it ended. I can honestly say I've never been so wrapped up in a story.

What I loved about it:

Kishi's art style - for me, it is detailed enough without being excessively busy. I especially think the emotions of the characters are well-conveyed through facial expressions. If you doubt me, go back and look at the panels of Sasuke's face when Naruto says "Because you're my friend." Yeah, it was there.

The multiple themes of duality - light/dark, Senju/Uchiha, Sasuke/Naruto, good/evil. The best thing about it is that the lines between good and evil were adequately blurred so that an adult could enjoy the story. Life is never black and white.

The relationships- I got hooked on the story because of Naruto and Sasuke's relationship. I also liked how Kakashi/Obito were so closely connected to each other in the distant past and to Naruto since the day of his birth. I thought the closure for Kakashi was well-written (lots of people didn't like Obito coming back, etc.), but their healing really began the moment Obito is unmasked.

What I disliked:

Pacing of the war arc: some of the Obito vs the SA chapters dragged, some were almost too fast. Chapter 699 could have easily been 5 chapters. Allow the fans to feel the victory, see everyone reunited, and see Naruto get the Hokage robe, darn it.

Kaguya - only foreshadowed about 10 chapters before she showed up. Too many villain handoffs. Madara would have been the better final villain.

Calling a move canon - the biggest a$$pull of the series. I'm sure the story is beautiful and the animation excellent. I know manga is a business, but this made me want to puke. It still does. The fact that the content of the movie is set up by the Kaguya arc is almost an insult to the fans' intelligence.

All in all, 8 of 10 - I took off points for the last 15 chapters being so lackluster, and I should take off another one for greed. But Wednesdays (or I guess it was Thursdays those last few months) just aren't the same any more :)

You seemed to hit all the main points, not much to add on.

I guess the main problem I had toward the end of the manga was differentiation
When the manga started there was so much potential to showcase all the clans and what they could do thus achieving variety no clan being that much stronger over the others/ being good at different things

Toward the end it felt only Uchiha, Senju, Uzumaki + the few exceptions mattered the rest were outclassed in every way. The Leaf village alone (past and present) could probably take on every other village together.

Overall it was very enjoyable over the years

For me, Naruto was the gateway manga (I didn't know I could read manga online before that ), and even though I was quick to move on to Seinen and otherwise different kinds of manga, I still stayed with Naruto, reading it every week. I really like the world Kishimoto created - immersive, diverse, but at the same time easy enough to understand, with memorable characters, jutsu etc. I might wish that it was a bit more scientific overall, but that's just me and my liking for science fiction.

I remember all those times when I was traveling and had to look for places with Wi-fi in order to read the new chapters and discuss them. I've found Naruto communities on every social network I've been part of, since they were usually among the most active ones, and it was fun to stay there. I remember how, during Jirayia's battle with Pain, a user on one site was spamming "I HOPE JIRAYIA DOESN'T DIE" over and over... Poor guy.

Also, somehow, my love for my Naruto fave managed to endure everything - no matter how many times I changed my main fandom and found new characters to like, I kept relapsing. I even got a tattoo to symbolize him due to this. Not to mention he indirectly influenced me to take my current career path and find a job that I'm enjoying to this day - even though I've never thought about trying it before. It's also probably the only case of unconditional love for a fictional character for me, since there literally are no good reasons to like him otherwise U_U

Even though the past few years weren't as good as the previous ones story wise, it still left a good overall impression. Even the ending wasn't too bad for me, more along the lines of, "I hoped for something different but okay". I'm still going to stick around for all expansions, I don't care about milking - it's not like they were doing charity before, after all. Just the Naruto world itself - if nothing else, I'm staying for it.

@ bold: I am still going to interpret it differently and only as much part of the movie is canon as fits in the timeline and story of the manga. :heh: For one the translated words by the writer were: "tried to keep it as canon as possible". So I take it that "sorry but it was impossible to make a teen movie if we picked only what was in the manga." For the second reason- just because. :p

I haven't watched the movie yet. But I saw spoilers and in one scene they showed Hinata could use Bayakugan to look inside Naruto's pocket and count the total money. That was just- for the whole manga I took the power of Bayakugan as an ability to see the chakra flow and points ony- like an X-ray. But if it's a power that can see though anything in that way- It's surprising that people didn't feel awkward if one of the Hyugas would look at them. ( Though it might explain why Hinata kept getting all red every time Naruto was around.. *Cough*). If I misunderstood the spoiler( chances are high - how many times people raged just by spoiler alone but manga chapter told a different story? :p) then it's another matter.

Well first of all i started watching the anime way back in 2002 or 2003 on a German tv station the only source of Naruto i had back then. Back then i was still watching Pokemon (it was already boring back then), One Piece which was exciting and boring at the same time, my favorite back then was definitivly Digimon the original first 2 parts =D

When Naruto came i was right away hooked, after 2 episodes it became my favorite show and i couldnt wait for a new episode which was comming out every day, they showed it in seasons 50 episodes each, so we had 50 work days episodes after that was spent i had to wait for 8-9 months for new episodes.

Anyway now to the story, i instantly loved the Naruto Universe, Ninjas where cool, ninjutsu was cool, mysteries where cool and Naruto as a character was cool after episodes 3-4.

I remember how little i knew the background back then, it was like the very tip of a iceberg back then who would have known about the deepnes of what we all know today.

Back then i didnt know that it is a Japanese show or anime at all, i didnt know about fillers i though they where actual plot lol i found out 2008 that they where fillers lol

The chunin exams where exciting, and i was afraid aswell cause Naruto and co might have died. The Kyubi was OP back then. The start of the attack on Konoha by Sound village and Sand village was epic. The chase for Sasuke was honestly for me very boring and frustraiting except for the Kiba part that was fun. Naruto vs Sasuke battle was epic i almost died from excitment. I seriously though that Sasuke had no chance and the end result of the battle made no sense to me. Then came the fillers lol i didnt know that, it sucked so bad that my excitment went down and eventually i stoped watching it for few months turned on tv and still fillers until it came to the leaving of Naruto to train with Jiraya.... then my cable tv shut down that german tv station and i stoped watching Anime all together.

Summer 2008, i still didnt have a computer, so i went to a internet caffee and totaly by accident i saw a advertisment for some Naruto stuff so i remembered back and started using my limited computer skills to search for Naruto. Naruto shippuden was comming out all the time and i found out that the show is still running. I didnt know about streaming so couple of weeks later i found by accident again a episode online. So i started watching again from episode 1 of shippuden. I was going there every day for 5 days strait. And watched in awarage 5 episodes per day.
One day that internet caffee told me to **** off, cause back then in my country the term "flat internet" was a unknown term so they had to pay alot hahahaha. So few months passed and didnt watch it again, then i wanted to watch it so badly that i decided i must buy a computer. So i did i bought a old pentium 4, found a internet provided which gave me only 5 GB free per month after that i had to pay a lot of money so i had to save my internet lol. I watched around 10 episodes per month, after a while i got to the end line aka end of finished episodes and watched it as every1 else 1 episode per week :)

Fav arcs are Chunin exams, Naruto vs Sasuke battle, Naruto vs Orochimaru battle, Jiraja vs pain arc, pain arc and Sasuke vs Naruto v2.

Best character for me:

Naruto
Kakashi
Hinata
Konohamaru
Shikamaru
Kiba
Gaara
Raikage
Pain
Jiraya

Worst:

Sasuke part II (no character, cold and evelish and no emotions i could not connect to him, while part I Sasuke was much better developed then part II)
Kabuto, i hated him so much
Zabuza

Oh and to just add two more facts i didnt know.

That German TV station "edited" the episodes cause their audiance was 8yrs old + let's just say this, half of the Zabuza fight was cut, it was rather unerving cause i didnt realise that i just though what a weird action scene transition, they didnt even show the Haku and Zabuza death scenes.... They did that to all other fights where blood and violence was shown.

Later on i hooked more to the Manga then to the Anime (the realisation what fillers are opened a brand new world for me).
I knew about manga in general and naruto manga 2010 but i didnt start reading it until end of 2011, let's just say i had to read around 150 chapters strait i did it withing 1.5 days reading it for hours without end with the music of "scorpions-send me an angel" i litteraly replayed that song so much that i puke when i hear it now lol. But it gave me a feel back then.

Started watching it since 2007-08(Idr) It aired on CN and then it just stopped existing. Naruto and Dragon Ball Z were my favourite 'cartoons'(as we called it earlier).4 years later I watched Shippuden,Read the Manga. It took me 2 years to finish it completely until the live one(because of slow internet). The only moment in which I cried was the Itachi's truth one. I almost consumed 1000 hours of my life on Naruto and I can proudly day that it was worth it. When I'll grow up and somebody will ask me about Naruto,I'll tell him what I did in my childhood and almost in the adulthood U_U. Thank you Naruto! :')

On my 14th I spent my summer holiday (4 weeks) the carribean island Curacao where my parents grew up. There, I was introduced to Naruto and before leaving that island to go back to Holland, I already finished the classical series. The music openings and endings and storyline released so many feels T_T Around 2012, I became more critical towards animation and plot. So, I decided to quit the anime but I continued reading the manga until the end. There are so many potential plottwists I thought of that could have made the manga to be the best story, irrefutably. Regardless of the disappointments, it did provide me with a joyful escape and motivation for rl issues.

For me Naruto was the greatest manga I've ever read. It was the gateway which brought me into the world of manga, and of course reading novels. The day Naruto ended, I gave up of Manga altogether. I am still reading Manhwa - The Breaker New Waves, though.
