You're right. I honestly didn't want to acknowledge cowardice in Itachi's actions but in looking back over learning the truth of this Uchiha mess, I can see how you can see that. In fact, I can see it as well. I think part of it was that Itachi initially thought he was doing his brother a favor by disappearing. Cowardice? Perhaps. Naivete? Definitely. As time moved on and as Itachi realized that he had become Sasuke's target, I think he began to realize he had made a major blunder. After encountering Naruto this last time, I think he had to take a good, hard, look at his actions and cowardice probably went through his mind. However, on the other hand, Itachi did say that he wanted to protect his brother but it could be cleverly disguised cowardice. I don't think we're going to get the warm and fuzzy "goodbye bro" embraces and pats on the back. I think there is too much history, too much pain for that to happen now. I also think that's why Itachi commented that all of his earthly ties have now been cut. There's nothing more he can do but he's going to do what he can and go out as silently as he feels a shinobi should and keep to the shadows. It's sad and may just inflame Sasuke more but their relationship is at an impasse. There's nothing more than can be said or done. These aren't two of the greatest communicators we have going in this manga. Personally, Naruto's bluntness and his ability to be so direct is refreshing. Can't wait to get back to that. Even Kakashi is more direct. LOL
