Chapter Four Part Two
Naruto and Hinata are at their recently bought two-story home two days after the fight with Lee. They are sitting at a table, conversing about life in general, when the topic of the Chuunin Exams pops up.
Hinata: Naruto-chan, what are you thinking about the Chuunin Exams?
She says calmly and with a hint of curiosity
Naruto: Hinata-chan, I don’t know what to say. I believe these kids have what it takes to pass. I’m only worried about the written exam. Hopefully, they can come up with a strategy.
Hinata: If only they had the Byakugan like I do. (Snickers after saying that)
Naruto: (Laughing)
Hinata: Do you know anything about the Exams?
Naruto: Only a couple things… (He explains to her what Shikamaru told him)
Hinata: Well, that makes it easier to know that Killer Bee is the Survival Proctor.
Naruto: Yea, but not by much. The Island Turtle is a hazardous place. But if the actual test is anything like what we had, it should be very easy for them.
Hinata: Hopefully…
Naruto: I can’t pull them out of the Exams now; it’s only two days away. We have to leave tomorrow. Which reminds me, what are your plans for the Exams?
Hinata: If I don’t have a mission, then I’ll come and watch with you. (She smiles at him)
Naruto (Smiling back): Awesome! I’ll be looking forward to it Hinata-chan.
Hinata: Me too. I can finally take a little time off.
The two keep on conversing, and carry out their lives for the remaining days until the Exams.
Naruto and Co. have arrived at the Hidden Cloud Village for the Chuunin Exams. The candidates have half a day to get prepared. There are about 30 candidates from all the Great Villages, and 15-25 from all the minor ones. Patsuta and Kameha are pretty nervous, while Fukutsu is prepared for the challenge. He knows his team is the strongest out of the bunch. The three go to find their rooms and food, while Naruto is going to meet up with some friends. Naruto arrives at a barbeque restaurant, where two tables are waiting.
Song: Homecoming
Naruto: What’s going on guys!
Kiba: Hey! Naruto! We saved you a seat.
Choji: Better hurry. I might eat your portion.
Shikamaru: Oh Choji. Come on, you got to stop eating so much.
Choji: I was just kidding Shikamaru, lighten up.
Lee: HAHAHA, eating is great for energy Shikamaru. Naruto, how have you been since our training?
Naruto: Tired, these Exams are exhausting.
Lee: Don’t get to down now, let the power of youth flow through you!
Ten Ten: Calm down Lee. Let him regain his strength.
Naruto (Smiling): Hahaha, it’s alright Ten Ten. If he was actually full of energy, he would have challenged me by now.
Lee (Sulking): Unfortunately, that is the truth. (Gleaming) Let’s forget that, we have more guests coming!
Three people appear in the doorway, a bit of wind follows them.
?: Are those seats for us?
Lee, Shikamaru, Ten Ten, Lee, and Naruto all look at the doorway.
Naruto: Kankuro, Temari, Gaara! Glad to see you.
Gaara: Same to you Naruto.
Kankuro: Smells good in here! Are they ready yet?
Choji: They must be cooked to perfection!
Kankuro: HAHAHA, alright then!
Temari takes a seat next to Shikamaru
Temari: Hey...
Shikamaru: Hey Temari, how was returning home?
Temari: It was great; I got to see my brothers again.
Shikamaru: Sounds fun…
Temari (blushing): Better time could have been spent with you…
Shikamaru: That would have been a drag. I was up to my neck in paperwork…
Temari (snickering): Alright then…
The rest of the group is laughing and enjoying themselves, even Gaara. Gaara has grown to become more open-minded and happy since the war. He still has that cool and laid back personality, but now knows how to enjoy himself. He takes a seat next to Kankuro. The two have developed a great brotherly bond as well. The jounin forget about the Exams, and have a fantastic time. However, they all start bragging about their own teams, and how good they are. After the competitiveness, they all head back to the inns, hoping for a fantastic show of the Chuunin Exams.
The next day…
Fukutsu: Let’s go guys!
Patsuta: Ready!
Kameha: Ready!
Fukutsu: Great!
Team Seven rushes to the building where the first part of the Chuunin Exams is taking place. They meet up with
Naruto right outside the door.
Naruto: Are you sure you want to go through with this?
Fukutsu: Of course! I’ve been waiting for a moment like this!
Naruto: What about you two? (Motioning to Patsuta and Kameha)
Patsuta: I’m not backing down!
Kameha (looking at Patsuta): Me neither!
Naruto: Alright, walk through those doors. Remember, try your hardest. I will be cheering you on from the sidelines.
Team Seven: Right!
The three walk into the room, where a bunch of desks are placed. They take their seats, far away from each other. Watch men are lined up on each wall, from all nations. The entire class gets silent as Ibiki Morino enters the room. He is the Written Exam Proctor for the Chuunin Exams unless on duty. The Kage recognized him as a very adequate proctor for the written portion. He only gives “The question” every ten years. And this happens to be that year.
Ibiki: It’s time to begin. I am Ibiki Morino, you’re proctor. And from this moment on, your worst enemy.
Ibiki: I’ll say this once, so listen up. There will be no combat between candidates, no attacking each other without permission from the proctor. And even then, fatal force is strictly prohibited. Anyone who even thinks of messing with me will be disqualified. We will start the written test momentarily.
Ibiki: Alright. Listen up you pests. This is a ten point test, but unlike something you are used to, you start with a perfect score of 10 out of 10. There are a couple rules that you must follow. 1. Cheating is prohibited. Each count will deduct two points from your grade. Five counts and you will be disqualified, along with your teammates. Understood?
Class (In agreement): Hmmmm…
Ibiki: Good. You may begin once the time hits 10 o’clock. (15 seconds away)
Fukutsu: *Thinking* Great, a written test. Shouldn’t be too hard for Patsuta and Kameha… This will be a piece of cake!
Patsuta: *Thinking* I hope this is easy. We can’t be disqualified first round, we’re too good for that. We will see soon though…
Kameha: *Thinking* A written test. Shouldn’t be tough for me, I hope Patsuta does well. And Fukutsu, we need to stick together as a team.
Ibiki: BEGIN!
The genin all flip their papers over, ready take the test. However, it’s not all as it seems…
Fukutsu (looking over the questions): *Thinking* Holy **** this looks hard.
Patsuta (Looking at his teammates): *Thinking* I wonder if they were prepared for this. I can’t even find the answer to the first question. Not only that, but each question gets harder.
The sound of pencil to paper can be heard throughout the room. Not only is it the genin’s pencils, but the eagle-eyed instructors as well….
All of the sudden a voice can be heard out
Instructor 1: Candidate number 53: Fail! That means candidate 47 and 85 also fail.
Candidate 85: Goddamnit, why couldn’t you keep your eyes to your own paper?
Candidate 53: Sorry, it was just too hard for me!
Kameha: *Thinking* Hmmm, these questions are tough. But it seems as though there are some who know the answers. Why are they the only ones writing down everything?
Kameha thinks for a couple seconds.
Kameha: *Thinking* That’s it! They want us to cheat! That’s why the small reduction of points when getting caught.
It’s because you’ve gotten caught, not because you cheated! I wonder how I can get the answers though. Did Patsuta and Fukutsu figure it out yet?
More candidates continue to be disqualified for cheating. About 1/3 of the crowd has been thinned. Kameha gets an excellent idea while thinking.
Tap…..Tap tap tap…. Tap……. Tap tap tap
Patsuta: *Thinking* Who’s tapping their pencil?
Kameha: *Thinking* Come on Patsuta, Fukutsu, please figure it out.
Tap….. Tap tap tap….. Tap…… Tap tap tap tap….
Patsuta: *Thinking* That could be Kameha, but I don’t want to look back in case I might get marked down.
Tap…..Tap tap tap……tap…….Tap tap tap tap…..
Fukutsu: *Thinking* Dammnit Patsuta, figure it out. It’s morse code. She wants us to grab the wire coming near our seats.
Fukutsu gives Patsuta a glare, as he is stumbling to figure it out. Suddenly a gleam catches Patsuta’s eye. He sees the wire next his desk.
Patsuta: *Thinking* Ohhhh, I get it now. It was Kameha tapping her pencil. I see, so we need the wire. I have to send a message back to her.
Tap tap….tap…tap tap tap…. Tap tap… tap tap…
Kameha: *Thinking* Got it.
More tapping occurs, as she gives Patsuta the instructions. The tapping isn’t very loud, and sounds like more pencil marks. However, during the training, Patsuta, Fukutsu, and Kameha learned Morse code. So these three can tell what each other is saying, even though it is hidden by other noise. Patsuta and Fukutsu wrap the wire around their pencils, as Kameha gives chakra to make it move. The three begin to write the answers to all the questions. They finish with only 15 minutes left in the testing period.
Ibiki begins to make his way to the front of the room.
Ibiki: Here is the tenth and final question. But before I give you the question, there are some more rules first. These rules are unique to question ten. Listen up: they might scare you. Rule no. 1: Each of you has a choice on whether to receive the final question. It’s your decision.
Fukutsu: *Thinking* What! Free to choose!
Kameha: *Thinking* What could this question be?
Candidate from the Mist: So what’s the catch?
Ibiki: If you choose to not take the question, regardless of the other nine, you fail along with your teammates.
Class: Of course we’ll take the question, we don’t want to fail… Yea we don’t want to fail, why would we do that…. (More murmuring)
Ibiki: Not so fast… You didn’t let me finish. If you do accept the rules, but answer it incorrectly, you not only fail, but you will be barred from taking the Exams ever again!
Class: (gasp)
Candidate: That’s bull ****!
Ibiki: Then you can quit if you think so…
(Candidate sit’s back down)
Ibiki: Now then, if you’re ready, the tenth and final question. Those who don’t want to take it, raise your hand. Your number will be recorded, and then you’re free to go.
Patsuta: Hmph, we can handle this last question. We answered the other nine fairly easily.
Fukutsu looks at Kameha and Patsuta, given them the notion to stay. A couple other teams raise their hands, weeding the crowd from the original 105 teams to a now slimmer 70.
Ibiki: This decision is one that could change your life. If you want to quit, here’s your chance.
Time passes by, the examiners give Ibiki head nods.
Ibiki: Since you are the only ones left, there is one thing left to do. And that is to say that, you passed.
Candidate: Hold on, What!
Candidate 2: Where’s the tenth question?
Ibiki (grinning): Don’t you see, that was the tenth question. Your decision to stay was the answer.
Candidate 3: So what you’re saying is that the other nine questions were for nothing?!?
Ibiki: No not at all. Quite the contrary, it was a test for you to gather strategic information under the most adverse of circumstances.
Candidate 3: Oh… that makes sense.
Ibiki: This whole test was based on the value of team work. The tenth question was the climax of how well you trusted your teammates, and the other parts were working as a tea to gather said strategic information. That’s the whole reason the score was based on the team. The first nine questions on the test were tough, and you may have realized that they were nearly impossible for any mere genin. I expected most of you to figure that out. The test made each of you cheat. In fact, it almost demanded it. Of course, it would have done anyone little good to cheat off of no one, so I placed five chuunin among you to essentially “give” you the answers. Those who were caught cheating failed. It’s better not to cheat, than to cheat clumsily. How well you gather intelligence is the difference between a failure and success. There will be times you will have to risk your life to get it. Another thing, disinformation can be worse than no information at all. It can be the difference between life and death. Now that’s it. You pass. And I believe it’s about time for your next proctor to arrive.
Fukutsu: *Thinking* I wonder who it could be?
A medium height blond man walks into the room. He has multiple swords on his back.
?: OOOOO YEAA, Ibiki, how were the little chicki’s?
Ibiki: Killer Bee, you arrived right on time. They are all yours.
Bee: Alright! We better get going, so we don’t start at night! Let’s gooo! YEAAAAAAA
The scene fades out, with Bee and the genin journeying towards the Island Turtle.
