i mean he out smarted zabuza with sasuke
he is a master of deception with kage bushin no jutsu
he out smarted nagato and even kakashi

as far as books smarts naruto is not that great
as far as women goes no he not that good... YET
but for battle he is on par if not above jiraiya or even minato... as say he is slightly below shikamaru in battle tatics but naruto is the type of ninja were if their is a wall or a group of elites well they ain't gonna be there for long.

I wouldn't say that he is as smart as he is resourceful. Naruto doesn't really look for enemy weak points. He has a tendency to rush in and figure things out as he goes. His methods are more trial and error than anything else. He does have a different way of perceiving situations, though. This makes him rather unpredictable, and usually plays to his advantage.

If you look at Naruto's battles, his tendencies have placed him at a significant disadvantage on a number of occasions.

1. Against Haku, he would have lost if Sasuke hadn't protected him (and he then went crazy).

2. Against Kiba, he would have lost if he hadn't farted.

3. Against Deidera, he would have lost if Kakashi hadn't saved him.

4. Against Kakuzu, he would have lost if Kakashi and Yamato hadn't saved him.

Tactically, he is nowhere near Shikamaru, because Shikamaru can judge a scenario and figure out an effective strategy without placing himself in danger. Shikamaru can figure out a battle from start to finish, whereas Naruto tends to defeat opponents because of his stamina and unpredictability.

I'm not saying that Naruto is a complete idiot, but he is just not tactically smart. He does have some moments that could be seen as brilliance, but most of them are from his overwhelming stamina and his unpredictability. Furthermore, most of these moments of "tactical brilliance" come after he has almost lost.

As for the two battles you listed, Naruto would have died in both had someone not come to his aid. Against Pain, Naruto was staked to the ground and he couldn't move. Much like when he faught Haku, Hinata was seriously wounded and Naruto went crazy. He did have moments in the battle that were rather impressive but they could all be attributed to trial and error, his stamina and his odd way of looking at various situations.

When Naruto fought the other Jinchuriki, he was immobilized and almost captured fairly early in the battle. He was only saved when Guy and Kakashi arrived to beat back Tobi. Again, most of what happened in this battle could be chalked up to Naruto's odd way of looking at the world. As for getting spit up by the Four Tails, Naruto used the same strategy for not getting eaten during his encounter with Orochimaru at the Chunin Exams.

Naruto is what you could call battle smart. Like how he defeated the Raikage, how he figured out his weakness... yea he had people to give him info, but Dodai knew of that for a long time and never figured it out while Naruto did it in the middle of the battle.
He isn't a tactician like Shikamaru or smart as in reading books and knowing stuff, but when he is fighting things change.
