But didn't he awaken them 'just' before his death, and Obito stayed with the old man for a few years, so I'm assuming that he awakened them while Obito was there and we just didn't see it. But why would he just give them to Obito instead of some kid who he had never met?

The SO6P was not a Senju nor a Uchiha and combining Senju and Uchiha DNA dose not give you a Senju/Uchiha,it gives you something older by a noter name. What could this be? Perhaps An Uzumaki. Senju + Uchiha = Uzumaki. Kurama and the tail beast know, Will they tell?

Power-wise, it is plausible that Madara is the closest thing we have seen to the SO6P. However, we don't know the full extent of the sage's power. The Akatsuki is an organised crime family, headed by Nagato, who's top men are called the Six Paths of Pain. Nagato's favorite show is also The Sage of the 6 Paths.
Guy and Lee are failed action movie star duos.
Killer B is a local rapper that Naruto hangs out with, and has a pet octopus. A is his "Older Brother", and is a head electrician for his company.

COAT isn't nececarily a rinnegan tech. Izanagi is a form of COAT, and Obito/Danzo dont have rinnegan when they use it.
Also, obito didn't stay with madara for years.

The bijuu here is not wrong. He and the other tailed beasts are the only person who has seen the sage(whom are still alive). I do believe if information comes out, it will come out of the tailed beast or the 10 tails(something unlocks if the 10 tails completes).

Note that the sage was a "nice" guy. With peace in mind he wanted to guide the world. Madara is a c*nt (though very cool).
Impossible that he is the reincarnation of the Sage of the Six Paths!
